I love this team chemistry much more that past few years. I think were making it this year

Lets see how we do v St. John's and in the tourney first. Too early, the talent level we have played against so far is not the talent level of the teams coming up.

But keep the enthusiasm

wayy too early to say and Rutgers play in the toughest conference in college basketball which will likely hurt their overall record. We played Rutgers Newark and Howard..nothing to get too excited about. I think any talk of postseason tournament bids should at least wait to see how they do against Creighton, St. John's, Wake Forest and Seton Hall

But there's some things to be excited about early on starting with Sanders and Freeman. I will say this again though, I think as the season goes on depth might be a problem. Lets hope Doorson gets healthy soon and can contribute because I believe they will need his size when Big 10 play begins

We'd have to improve a ton, stay healthy, and have a few of our core players get hot from the perimeter.

Watching yesterday...one of the early possessions Lewis get the ball in the high post and the wing (Foreman?) cuts to the basket. Lewis throws a chest pass on the fly at the belt of the cutter and we don't convert. Another possession we hit Foreman in the high post and 1st thing he does is puts the ball on the floor...meaningless dribble.

We were 0-12 from 3 at one point. We had 17-18 turnovers. All this stuff needs to be cleaned up.

i give us a .5% chance of NIT...1 in 200. I'll play though...

10-3
7-11
1-1

18-15 gets you in the discussion, probably on the wrong side (wow it is tough)

You almost have to beat SJU and not slip up OOC and take 2 Creighton, WF, SHU, GW, Game 2 on tourney.
7-11? would have to be a combination of winning close games and B1G having a few teams having bad years. maybe getting 2 upsets at home?

let's be honest Howard ends up being a #250 team that NIT teams dispose of easy. I was impressed with the manner we beat them given the fact we did a lot wrong.

if we are 7-2 on December 9th this conversation starts (resumes).

It's very early, but, something about this team excites me. It's just a hunch. I think you have extremely athletic and competitive guys that will fight until the last whistle. I think we will know after the St. Johns game if this team has a fighting chance.

This thread is stinky bait. How many Big Ten games did we win last year? We are not making a quantum leap this season. It will take opposing coaches 10 minutes of film study to figure out how to neutralize Sanders and Freeman. Without a serious 3-point shooting game and the new 30 second shot clock, our chances are not improving dramatically.

Thanks "Coach K, Coach Calipari and all the other great coaches wrapped up in one" ....lol at 10 minutes of film study. You lost all credibility when you made that statement ! :boxing:

You need 10-3 out confrence to think shot at NIT....

A win against at johns has us trending that way

So which Big Ten teams do you see us beating Mr Credibility Judge?

I liked what I saw yesterday but I still say 10 wins (almost all out of conference)...Howard was not very good. They had a couple of chucking guards and that's about it. However, if we beat St.John's on the road, then maybe we will be better than I think.

Unfortunately, as this team begins to really gel, we"ll be hitting the B1G part of the schedule.
Without a reliable 3-point game and subpar free throw shooting, upsets are unlikely. Very small or no margin for error. God help us if we don't stay healthy (knock on wood).

RU will have to win SEVEN conference games to make the NIT....not happening. I realize that there is some optimism with the new guys but lets consider our competition in the Big 10. Just because we beat a D3 school and dispatched over a weak Howard does not mean we are making post season

With all the football negativity it's great to read some upbeat comments. Unfortunately, I don't think the team is very talented. I can't say I see evidence of the athleticism others see, with the exceptions of Sanders and Bishop. To that point, note the press did not generate steals yesterday. Our quickness and size are average and our shooting/scoring ability is below average. Oh, and we're young. I do like the passing and team orientation. I have tickets to most of the games so I hope we are competitive. I would be shocked if we got close to an NIT bid though.

I'm not sure if anyone on this board has done an in depth analysis of any other B1G team. Things like; returning starters, injuries, how freshmen have played in early games, etc. There is a long list of things to look at before anyone can say with any level of certainty that Rutgers can make a run at the NIT or Will not even be close to making a run at the NIT.

I have no idea how many games Rutgers can win in the B1G because I have not seen any other teams play....I just know Wisconsin lost to Western Illinois and Illinois lost to North Florida by 7 at home and just beat powerhouse North Dakota State by 6 at home . Not exactly glowing endorsements. I'm certain most people have those down as automatic losses for Rutgers.

"That's why they play the games" !!

You lost just as much credibility when you called Chris Berman great. Yuck.

One of the reasons I like the Basketball board is because you have some really knowledgeable basketball fans that really discuss players, strategy, teams strengths/ weakness and coaching tactics.

Unfortunately, you also have those posters that HIT and RUN. They come in, post a negative comment and then you never see them again.

That is why I usually save my responses for that core group of regular posters and fans that really know the game.

I have said this in the past, the teams of the last 5 games of the season had a combined conference record of 28-42 last year and that includes a game against Michigan State. If you want to get to the NIT, we need to make it so those 5 games matter.

Choppin you are a breath of fresh air on the boards. I liked a lot of what I saw in the first two games and I think there is a genuine reason for hope this year. I don't know what is going to happen but I like the way we share the ball, work on the defensive side, our athleticism and our body language. Heck we scored 80 points going 2 for 12 from 3 and foreman(whose stroke was good) went 5 for 13 from the line. We will have better nights from 3 and foreman had most of his misses go in and out. We easily could have scored 90. From what I remember of the Hill and Rice years I seldom remember 80 and 90 point scoring nights. Almost everyone on here said we wouldn't be able to score at all because we lost our two top scorers. We will have some rough nights as all teams do, but I can't remember a RU team move the ball like this team so far and most of the guys can score the ball to some extent.

I don't know how many games we can win. Hopefully the RAC will help us win some games and not be a library. Excited about Sanders and Freeman. Think Williams will be better. Need to be better from foul line this year. I don't know what big ten teams we will beat but some teams will have injuries.

NIT would be great of course, but I'm just looking forward to seeing a season of competitive basketball. May or may not be reflected in wins/losses in the end , but I'm not gonna judge this team by a postseason berth just yet.

Next season, it's elite 8 or bust ;)

Does this message board have the capability to time-stamp this thread as a Sticky Thread for posting (and re-examination) at the end of the regular season?

Down to bring back the rac and lead the charge with some noise

Never understood the obsession with the NIT....make it or not, I don't really care. Looking to finish in the top half of the Big Ten at some point, and eventually make the tourney. If an NIT happens in between, great, a few bonus games to end the year.

I remember a few years ago Georgetown won the NIT. The banner hangs over the urinals in their locker room.

Have to figure an 18-15 Big10 team should be good enough for NIT, right?

Bac said 12 wins. I'm not fair off from the majority of posters.

He has knowledge of the game. I don't know if he is right or wrong and I rarely agree with him, but, at least he knows the game. He can engage in meaningful conversations about basketball when he wants to seriously engage. He is just jaded by years of losing..... so just about everything he posts has a negative slant..

After being an RU fan since the age of 4, going to the RAC to watch the Hinson team with my dad, throw football on top of this, I'm outright jaded as well!

FIG,

I'll take the 200-1 for 20(get back 4000) LOL

Worth the risk of the cost of a pretzel, hot dog and soda at the game to get back 4000.

Actually, let's just hope that we continue to get better and better each game and start playing like a team for the first time in years.(we haven't probably since Mike Rice's first year and even though they weren't good, at least they did play somewhat like a team and overachieved to their talent)

Best of Luck,
Groz

To be clear, I wasn't disagreeing with your sentiment.....just making a joke.

We're 2 and 0 right now. I like what I've seen and am hopeful for growth. I'm not expecting to win the next 29, but right now I just want to be optimistic about being good enough to avoid a 10th year without a post season.

It beats talking about firing Flood.

Let's focus on being 1-0 on Thursday.

Thursday and every other game on our OOC schedule is important. We need to win as many of these OOC games as we can to gain more confidence before playing 18 games in the BIG.
