Article "Ron Cook: Why Pitt is it in football". Kills Franklin.

Which includes ...

"Franklin has been a big disappointment, actually. He hasn’t delivered any of the promises he made when he was hired from Vanderbilt after the 2013 season. His offense has been painful to watch. He ruined Christian Hackenberg, at least as a college quarterback. Penn State didn’t just lose to Temple last season for the first time since 1941, it was clobbered, 27-10. It is 0-6 against Ohio State, Michigan State and Michigan under Franklin. I know the NCAA sanctions from the tragedy caused by Jerry Sandusky were difficult, but being outscored by an average of 34-15 by your three biggest Big Ten Conference rivals? Losing to Michigan State, 55-16, in the final regular-season game last season? No wonder much of the We Are! fan base is losing patience with Franklin. He really needs to beat Pitt and Temple in September."

Nice to see comments from an impartial journalist.

Don't hold your breath waiting to see that kind of observation from the impartial "journalists" at NJ noosepapers.

Many people have been saying this about Franklin for 2 years. There is a lot of pressure on JF this year and i suspect he will be looking for a new job with another 6-7 win season.

The author of that article is way off base, Franklin has done a phenomenal job at PSU and I hope they sign him to a 20 year deal after this season.

I hope Pit wins big vs PSU on Sept 10th. PSU is the only B1G team I want to get smacked in all of their OCC games.

Penn State fans are starting to realize Franklin isn't as good as they thought. Recruiting has dropped this year with many Pa recruits going to out of state colleges. They really need to start performing on the field or the sh** gonna hit the fan.

There was a thread on their board complaining about negatives posts affecting recruits. Does this sound familiar?

Would be interesting if Franklin turns out to be just a flashier version of Kyle Flood.

This post from the thread you linked sums up Franklin's problem in a nutshell: "(3) Coach James Franklin needs to "own" some of the negative criticism. He talked about "dominating the state", nobody prompted that but Franklin, but then he lost to Temple. He talked about "Maryland might as well shut down their football program", nobody prompted that but Franklin, but then he lost to Randy freaking Edsall. Like it or not, Franklin's own big mouth has caused a portion of his problems."

Don't think that is possible, because at least early on, Franklin proved himself to be a good recruiter. Flood never had that going for him. Besides the on the field performance, which could still be attributed to the sanctions, Franklin's biggest problem now is he has to recruit against Urban Meyer, Jim Harbaugh, Narduzzi, Chris Ash and DJ Durkin in areas that he used to have a relatively easy time of it. So the competition has gotten much tougher for recruits. Franklin and PSU need to have a bang up year on the field. Doubt he survives if PSU loses to 2 of 3 of Temple, Pitt and Rutgers.

The Penn State fans has started to call Franklin the CEO of the football team since he has to hire the right coaches to coach the team. Franklin has hired new offensive and defensive coordinators like Flood and others were calling Flood the CEO.

The Real Coaches, not posers, are coaches and their careers don't depend solely on the coordinators. Meyers and Saban goes thru coordinators without losing a step.

In that respect, Franklin and Flood may be similar. Was looking at Franklin's resume, and did not realize he was Ron Prince's OC at Kansas State. At least Franklin had 4-5 years of coordinator experience before becoming a HC. Flood had none.

Franklin wasn't all that during his time at Vandy. I think he beat two teams with winning conference records when he was there and that's been his claim to fame.
I did an analysis previously that showed Franklin's success at Vandy could almost all be accounted for by the fact he was lucky enough to coach there during downturns by Tenn, Kentucky and Florida.

He picked up 5 more wins (in three years) against those teams than you would expect from Vandy, but those teams had in excess of 15 more losses than their historical average during the same three year period.

What I meant was that Franklin is flashier and was able to have some early recruiting success because of that. But now the flash has worn off and it's down to substance, and Franklin may not be appreciably better there than Flood.

After re-watching the RU-PSU game of 2014, I tend to agree. Can't give any weight to the 2015 game, since Flood was not there---because if he was there, it would have been another close game.
