Article: Schools can now pay for parents to accompany recruit on official visits

Although I really think it is a good thing for the parents to be with them, this will also open up some more possibilities for the "factories" to abuse the system.

Great news. Poorer HS students had to either go alone or couldn't go since their parents couldn't afford the trip and hotels, etc.

In addition, this lead to a lot of extra parties, extra brown bagged money, underage drinking, drugs, hookers, etc. in the South mostly. Miami, SEC, Texas schools, etc.

Maybe with this new rule that will be cut down a bit.

How? If a school wanted to abuse the system, they could have found a way to fund the parents trip in the past.

Students never had to go alone on official visits, they always paid for at least one parent/guardian--all expenses.

Not according to the article:

The current rule allowed for only the prospect's travel and accommodations to be paid for and prohibited schools from paying for transportation costs incurred by relatives, friends or legal guardians. Under that rule, prospects were either taking official visits by themselves or parents, guardians or high school coaches were taking on the costs to accompany the recruit on the visit.

I have to say that I am really amazed that so many seem to think that a lot of the schools that are usually on a list of being investigated had problems in getting the parents to the school too.
These are the same programs that found jobs for mom and dad or whomever if the kid committed. How difficult would it be for the new job to pay for someone to come and "interview" ?
With the stories that have come out about the abuses of recruiting, you really think finding the money for the parent(s) to get to the school presented any problems?

In the past no, it wasn't. the NCAA gave up and made it legal.
