Ash was OK with Laviano

if this is really a year of rebuild then Odin needs to see the field this season.Ash is pushing his mindset that true freshman will play, and several did yesterday..so if we are going to get blown out by power teams and watch repeats of Laviano failures,,might as well let Odin learn on the job..we have lewis comming next year also. Two qbs that know the offense scheme that Ash wants to run.

...We have two games coming up that we should win. Give Ash and Laviano a chance before calling out the lynch mob.

I disagree with this... sometime pulling the kid is the right thing to do. And certainly getting experience for other QBs is the right thing to do.

After some contemplation, I do agree with RaRa and others about how this offense is going to take more time to gel.

But I do not know if Mehringer saw enough during the game to decide why the offense was not executing well. I think he probably watched game tape the whole plane ride back and then some more. Only he will know what was called, what look the defense gave, what the proper reads should have been.. from the QB and receivers.

While it is possible the whole offense needs more time.. it is also possible that the QB stunk up the joint by not making the correct reads and/or not throwing the ball when he should have... pulling it back down only to have the OL fail to give him more time than he should have taken.

Mehringer will KNOW. Ash will KNOW. Maybe Laviano will KNOW.

None of us can know at this point.

But here's what I would try if I were Ash. Since Allen was supposedly close and since Gio was supposedly number 2 for this game... put together packages for those QBs along with Laviano.

Give them a scripted series with the same WRs and TEs and have them practice that script of, say maybe 8-10 plays, over and over during the week. Very limited playbook for them. And very specific reads for the skill players out there with them. Keep developing Laviano as the number one.. but try to see if the offense can run with one of the other guys. Maybe only in direct comparison during a game can you see how much of the offense is predicated on what the QB does or does not do well.

Mehringer on QB Chris Laviano: “I still have the utmost confidence (in him) I could have in a quarterback.”

JP Pelzmann:
It’s hard to judge Laviano off this game. Yes, the numbers were lackluster--24-for-40, 168 yards, one interception that was nearly a pick-six. If you want to say it’s the same old Chris Laviano from last season, you are well within your rights to do so. But the fact is, the quarterback was given very spotty protection, especially in the decisive first quarter. Laviano didn’t crumble and kept playing, and even showed he’s willing to run occasionally in new coordinator Drew Mehringer’s power spread. The proverbial jury is still out.

I too have the "utmost confidence" in Laviano...the utmost confidence in my opinion that he is a terrible QB.

Way too soon to say that.

Look, we're gonna win 3 or 4. And that's OK as long as Ash keeps his recruits committed. This is going to take a couple of years before we're good. If Ash can't keep the recruits committed we're done and so is he.
Yes, but there might be a similarity, " I made my decision and I don't want to look bad
by changing QBs."

"But to try and say that Mehringer and Ash didn't make the correct decision based on six months of up close observation is just plain silly."

Sorry, not buying it.

If you want to say Ash didn't have a good feeling about the game and didn't want to throw an untested WB to the wolves I'd buy it. But to think football experience means you have to go with the guy who does best in practice is a joke. Practice is practice, games are different. If Ash lets Laviano struggle each week like Flood did we're screwed.

I can't believe Ash will go down with the ship the way Flood did.

He has already stated he will not be changing QBs. This was in today's paper.

I sure hope Ash does not bend to the will of the dumb fanbase.

Today was trial by fire. According to Ash ,we will not see a DL like this again. Would you measure a rookie firefighting unit based their performance at their first fire when it was a major conflagration? I would not. Lots of lessons to be learned today.

OL performed poorly, or maybe there was just nothing they were going to do against UW's formidable OL. Not the best way to judge the offensive unit.

Ash said this, and I agree-- the special teams needs a lot of work. Wondering why they did not go after another kicker when that kid with the bad masonry work decommited and went to PSU.
Wasn't there talk about finding a walk-on and not wasting a scholarship at that point ?

Did he throw more than one deep ball? I remember one to Agudosi which I thought was thrown too flat and did not allow Agudosi to use his height advantage.

Well, screw Ash until he changes his mind then because all you have to beat Rutgers is put 8 in the box and dare Laviano to throw a deep ball.

Other than the "screw Ash" part, there is something to be said for this thought and certainly, if this proves true Mehringer/Ash will have to do something about it because if teams start loading the box, the whole offensive system that Mehringer is trying to install will not function and we will not be building anything. You need well-practiced plays to get a fair look in order for them to work and reinforce proper execution. If the deck is stacked against it working, we will be training players to FAIL in the system.

I only remember the one deep ball. It was not on target.

If we were going to give someone else a shot, that guy should get playing time this week or next. When else would you give someone their first snaps? Iowa? That's not a formula for success.
