At least we have a QB to build around

disagree

plants his feet when trhowing
throws the out very well
accurate
can throw on the run (Lord knows we needed that this year)
not stupid for sure, makes good decisions
all this while being incredibly young

Im not sold. Threw as many into the dirt or way high as he did on target. And while he can make some plays with his legs, he is not the kind of dynamic runner that scares a defense.

Agreed. I like Gio, as a QB, better than Laviano, but he's not a quality B1G starting QB. I'm with mikemarc that our answer at QB is likely still in HS.

I'm not sold on the scheme.

I know people will disagree with me, but I've come to believe that the spread doesn't work without a franchise QB. We're nowhere near having that guy.

I thought the spread didn't need a franchise qb to work because it's not complicated.

well I'm rarely wrong so time will tell but Gio has some talent and makes all the throws you need a qb to make. it won't matter unfortunately, he'll have a new OC within a year and may outlast the hc here

The spread doesn't work without blocking. No offensive system does. None of the QBs at Texas Tech that were throwing for 10,000 yards every year under Leach were blue chip franchise QBs. They did have competent OL play, though.

You would hope if there was a quarterback to build around he would have been playing this season and led the team to some league wins.I expect Lewis to be red shirted next season just because of the time to learn the play book and accumulate to college life.

The spread offense is about getting it to your playmakers as quick as possible. We don't really have any. Gio has done a solid job. Hes only a sophomore. He has room to grow. He probably won't be a star but if he becomes an average college qb it's a heck of a lot better than the rest of the qbs in the roster. Put playmakers around him and he looks better.

Would like to see what he can do with a competent OL in front of him giving him time to read defenses and make throws

Gio made some excellent passes when he had time. He also made a beautiful pass on the run when he was about to get hit.

Gio is young and he is getting experience. If he has an improved OL, he will be a very productive QB.

OL recruits, transfers, grad transfers... this is the program where you can make a huge difference!

Gio runs some pretty good qb draws as well.

Sct1111... the playmakers are coming. Mitchell is already here. Hopefully Janarion comes back. These WR recruits that will be coming have SPEED.

What we need right now are OL transfers and recruits.

Haha. U r most likely wrong here, man.

There are different kinds of spread offenses that require different physical skills and mental acuity.

Yes,

But because it's a power spread it should be less complicated than a pro set, right? Need a qb who's a better athlete than passer in our version of the spread, which means you don't need a franchise qb.

100%.

Yes he does. With more time and space his and Oden and Lewis' games will elevate.

A little blocking wouldn't hurt either.
It's tough to look good as a qb when the ball reaches you shortly before one or two of the guys on defense do.

Kbee, that is exactly what I mean about time and space. Blocking gives the QB (and the TB) time and space so they can make plays. When Gio has time and space, he is very good.

ha, let's blame the qb here. what games have you been watching.
I am not blaming the QB. But an outstanding QB to build around would make things happen and win games. Doug Flutie. Michael Vick. Donovan McNabb. If we had one of those guys we would score a lot more points.

Of course it would be but if you're waiting for a Heisman level QB before we're successful you are never going to be satisfied.

Thank you for replying to Extra Point. I had a potential response, but it was much less tactful than yours. Of course we'd benefit from having an excellent QB, just as we'd benefit from having an excellent player at any position. .

Rescigno is not the answer. Not by a long shot. He's the best we had this year, that's the most I can say about him. I was at the Maryland game and several Maryland fans near me were laughing about the frequent "bounce passes" he tossed, as well as the several passes thrown WAY over the heads of receivers. Just way too inconsistent.

I don't think you need an all world qb to have a successful spread offense. It would be nice but not necessary. Lots of schools have put out good spread offenses that don't have "heisman" qbs. Kevin Wilson usually has put out solid offenses at IU, their problem was usually on defense. Do they have any heisman qbs on the roster?

At least when talking about the air raid type spread, what term was always thrown around? System qb right, is that referring to the next John Elway? No, it's this offense can take someone who's got a solid set of skills throwing the ball around and can make them look good. They always talk about how it's simple and easy to pick up and how the playsheet could practically fit in your hand.

Now is it completely analagous with the power spread? Maybe not but I think if you have a qb with very good mobility and a decent throwing arm you have a chance to be good provided you have the right coaching. I think Gio has an okay throwing arm and his mobility is good but I can't say that he's got that breakaway capability with his legs. He's got move the chains capability though. That's something I'd like to see. I don't know if any of our incoming recruits has that as I don't pay attention to recruiting.

I said before we even switched I liked the spread offense and even if we failed with the next coach I would try again with a new one who would hopefully be better. I could foresee there could be problems but to me it's still the best avenue to competing and performing above your perceived status on the college landscape. We've seen it time and again in many places. We may or may not have the right people implementing it but to me that doesn't mean you throw the baby out with the bathwater.
