I know Coach Ash is trying to start new, brand RU with his own ideas,Ripped down all the Family,TBA,Chop signage in the hale center and Practice field but..hes gotta keep in mind Recruits, fans all still identify Rutgers as ChopNation and use the Chop slogan for RU. If he thinks otherwise, look at what todays visting recruits put on social media..#ChopNation . One step at a time Coach..and dont change all of the RU past IDENTITY..

I hear you and I like the chop. but if coach thinks we need to move on then it's time to move on. he's going to be the one that sets the identity.

Did Urban Myer change OSU mantras and slogans #Gobucs?? Did Franklin change #Weare ,at State Penn?.. So. whats RU NATIONAL identity today?
#Ashera? ..you will have recruits and national fans going?..... "who" what???? Meaning..its not nationaly something thats associated currently with RU FOOTBALL...

Agreed....the most likely thing is that something will come up that represents greater success in everyone's eyes, and it would take over organically.

Chop is dumb, get rid of it

Chop is not dumb

You didn't like it when Eric Foster did the chop?
I agree it gives is an identity and I like it
Also like seeing the guys do it on the field to get themselves going, or to celebrate a play

I have to say naming the new "motto" after yourself is a bit self centered. I vote for chopnation. It is a school identity,

They should absolutely make a point of keeping Chop around. Fans, players, recruits still are aware of it and use it. It simply signifies focus, intensity, determination, and generally sticking to the task at hand.

Instead of wavering over whether it's important or not, imagine if Ash came in to an early meeting with the team, and ended with, "And one more thing...(dramatic pause)...We're gonna keep choppin, guys"... and broke out a big chop motion. They would have gone wild and it would have gotten real loud in there. It would be foolish and arrogant to just dispense with that type of emotional capital. It's just a motivational tool and rallying cry, and certainly shouldn't be artificially shut down just because it's a new regime that wants a fresh start. If anything, keep stuff like this around, and work on changing the stuff that matters (coaching, conditioning, work ethic, etc.)

Not a Rutgers fan so here's my take: When I hear something like "Chop Nation" I immediately think of Florida St Seminoles or Atlanta Braves, even U of FL because of the alligator chop. I dont think of Rutgers, arent you the Scarlet Knights anyway? If you want to develop a "National" following to further recruiting than you need to change your marketing.

The question is how does CHOP equate to Scarlet Knights? Yes I know the origins of Chop...but if your in 9th or 10th grade growing up your not associating Chop with Scarlet Knights. It hasn't been in use for decades...if stays cool or if it goes cool. But I don't get the love affair. #SchianoEra

It is not a tradition in my eyes and I have been going to these games since the 70s as a child. It was a gimmick by an overrated coach who bolted from the program and took his entire staff with him leaving us with a Coach Flood. Thank you Coach Ash for seeing through the false traditions and starting fresh.

All of the phrases from the GS-Flood eras that were put up over the last decade all over the Hale Center have been taken down so don't be surprised is the Chop fades away.

Ash, as you've noticed, is making a total break from the last 15 years. Don't be surprised is the uniforms are next.

Considering the fact that all Ash has had in public with him are the "old" jerseys and/or helmets, and the contract for the Power Ranger uniforms are up, we pretty much know this already (and have talked about it quite a bit) but, yeah, you're right.

FYI - there were about 120 HC's signed in for the meeting 2 weeks ago. The one your reported, for some odd reason, there were only about 30-40 in attendance.

Flood changed it from "Keep Chopping" to any derivative of chop he could think of including "#Chop[insert word]". Flood messed it up.

Keep Chopping could have been "War Eagle" ish.

I blame Flood.

Im sorry but what are you getting at? Man I love this board....

Well I - and others - were curious as to why, in that thread, you greatly misrepresented the # of HC's who were in attendance. Not the end of the world, don't get me wrong, it was just, well, odd.

I like everything Ash has been doing, but this isn't great. Those things were traditional at the school. We won with those things. You can't get rid of and start new traditions with every coach.

I can see putting your own stamp on the program, but that doesn't mean you get rid of everything that came before you.

Tradition poor Rutgers fan base grasping at straws.

Well, tradition has to start somewhere. If you tear everything down every decade, you will never get there. Chopnation hasn't been around forever, but its been around longer than anything else we've got. Its not bad. I certainly don't mind it.

I'm mixed on it. Maybe ash comes up with a great new motto that's in line with the next step that we need to take as a program. "Keep chopping" was, after all, a crutch when we fell short or didn't win the big one "we just weren't good enough today, but we're gonna keep chopping" or "we chopped today and we just needed that one last big chop that we didn't quite get" -- and variations of that. Chop represents the trials and tribulations and some of the successes but unfortunately I remember more of the shortcomings and that's the space it firmly occupies in my mind next to such quotes as "one day our best will be good enough to beat the best". When I think back to the 2006 video post USF game and Eric foster leading the chant, he didn't evoke the chop.

I think I just talked myself into putting chop out to pasture

Let it die a natural death. This guy has big plans for this program, let him do it his way, don't force GS gimmicks on him and his vision.

+1 How can people be so confused, yet so opinionated about the most mundane details? We want a new coach, and we get a new coach. We want a guy with a strong, type A personality that takes charge; we get that guy. But then we want to tell him how to do everything short of wiping his @##? And we want him doing the same things the old coaches we didn't like were doing? F that, Ash is going to do things his way, and he ain't stopping by here to ask for your advice.

If Ash sees value there, he'll keep it. Otherwise, he's the damn coach now, let him use his own motivational tools. Who here wants to make an argument that Chop wasn't watered down into meaninglessness under Flood. It was more #Chopforyourlife

Seriously. And I'm sorry but #FenceTheGarden is soft as baby shit. It's not clever and got old quickly.

Ash can do what he wants, but I see the chop as an important piece of tradition in a program that never really had much except for A) losing and B) playing a game against Princeton 150 years ago.

There are no rules for this stuff..... but, at some point, certain things move from simple motivation for the team to something closer to tradition.....

I'm not the judge - but sure seems like CHOP is as close as anything to crossing that line....

Perhaps "Believe" is as well, certainly "family", TBA, the axe were not anywhere close...

CA can do what he wants --- personally, hope we keep CHOPing

I don't like some yard bird coming in here and changing everything, and I bet most alums and longtime fans don't either. I would wipe my ass with a Ohio State degree. How about that? Just my opinion.

The chop and the ax are our tradition now

I think #FenceTheGarden is just the new recruiting cry, like putting a wall around New Jersey was the recruiting motto before Ash was hired.
As for keep chopping and Chop Nation, we'll just have to see if Ash thinks one or both should be a part of the program he plans to make.
Would love to see them included, but becoming a top program is more important to me.
