Attn Coach Ash:Rutgers will remain #ChopNation

I don't like some yard bird coming in here and changing everything, and I bet most alums and longtime fans don't either. I would wipe my ass with a Ohio State degree. How about that? Just my opinion.
This is a really dumb thread, congrats because you've taken it to another level.

Seriously. And I'm sorry but #FenceTheGarden is soft as baby shit. It's not clever and got old quickly.

Ash can do what he wants, but I see the chop as an important piece of tradition in a program that never really had much except for A) losing and B) playing a game against Princeton 150 years ago.

Chop was a gimmick not a tradition. Just like #FenceTheGarden is a hashtag not a motto.

Yeah, let's keep that unoriginal and non-creative slogan from two coaches ago. Good one.

The question is how does CHOP equate to Scarlet Knights? Yes I know the origins of Chop...but if your in 9th or 10th grade growing up your not associating Chop with Scarlet Knights. It hasn't been in use for decades...if stays cool or if it goes cool. But I don't get the love affair. #SchianoEra

I have no skin in this game, I don't really care if we keep "Chop" or not. But having said that, your post is the single worst one in this thread. Could not possibly be more wrong. I have a 9th grader (and an 8th grader). Chop is ALL they know, as far as RU traditions. There is literally nothing else, excepting perhaps the corny uniforms. They have t-shirts plastered with Chop Nation. They watch games and do the chop after a good play. They most definitely grew up exclusively in the era of Chop. The fact that our current recruits, who are only 3-4 years older than my son and his friends, use the #Chop hashtag, makes perfect sense, and will be hard to stop without coming up with something better than the lame, effeminate #fencethegarden. But my wife likes it.

Look. We are #FenceTheGarden now. Gardeners rarely chop. They HOE.

#HoeNation
#SweetLittleGardenToolNation My seven year old thinks Chop Nation is on Food Network. As long as the team sings the Alma Matter after the game, I'm happy.

College football is not about the X's & O's it's about the Jimmy's & Joe's - if this guy can recruit we will win - if he can't - we won't.

Schiano could recruit - Flood could not...this guy is up in the air...maybe 25 thousand feet at this point...how Midwest translates to Jersey..still doing the math.
imo

Ripping down all the chop signs is extreme and dumb. Honestly some of what this guy does reminds me of these recruits who get big heads.

Guy hasn't been a winning HC yet. He needs to chill out. I sense a ton of arrogance so far.

For those who keep claiming "he can do whatever he wants! He has big plans!". That's great. Many people - esp new coaches have big plans. He has no HC track record to go on. So I will question his arrogance which I think is pretty damn evident at this point. Hopefully it pays off. It may not, and he did not have to approach it this way.

I hear you and I like the chop. but if coach thinks we need to move on then it's time to move on. he's going to be the one that sets the identity.
Can't disagree more. He can set the identity for his staff and the team. Fan base can choose its own. Smarter for him to align and adapt.
ChopNation is more than a football brand now. RU sports...

Get your head outta the Ash.
Get your head out of your own @ss, it might be tough because apparently it has been there for awhile. If you think taking the chop signs down, and trying to change the culture of a declining program is extreme, then I simply just don't know what to say.

Yeah, because Greg wasn't even MORE "arrogant" when he got the job, lol!

From a very recent article:

"One of the first things Ash did after being hired was order the removal of the signage from the Flood era from the Hale Center. For instance, mottos and motivational sayings from the walls of the meeting rooms have been removed".

So, while there'll undoubtedly be fans who'll still use the "Chop" phrase for a while, (and a core group who'll always use it), I have a feeling the football team/program itself will slowly detach itself from it, and eventually probably the great majority of fans will leave it behind too.

Not saying that that's good or bad. It simply is.

I love the #ChopNation or chop whatever. It's unique for us and all the kids use it and love it. It's on Tshirts and everything that sell well also. Keep it! So far I haven't seen anything more clever or appealing and it takes years to build it up. Chop works, everyone still uses it and recognizes is for it. It's motivating, has a hand gesture and all.

Rutgers needed a confident coach like nobody's business. Come on, man.

I get people being a bit miffed at the move to drop the chop. But just so happy to have someone making their own decisions and moving decisively that it overwhelms any qualms or desire to question any and every little thing he's doing.

Carry on, Coach.

I think Schiano's greatest contribution to the branding of the program was the Block R magnet. To me much more important that Chop Nation but I will readily admit to not being a twitter guy. I am all in a going back to our older uniforms as well.

#Chop has become a known Rutgers mantra..and used as hashtag also. Again..did Myer or Franklin change #Gobucs .TheOhiostate.or #Weare?
I think Ash may be moving a little too fast and pissed off some long time RU people when they saw he ripped everything down..including RU block signage..putting up 'scarletknights' instead? from what I heard... and BTW fence the garden is dumb... as is Ashera..IMHO.
Note what KJ uses ..and go watch video to tweet.. Coach Ash. where he says Im at Chop Nation.

IMO chop was never a gimmick, it was the closest thing Rutgers football has to an identity.

Coach Ash can certainly move on from it and build a new identity, but don't make it look like chop didn't matter just because you hate Schiano or are still upset he left. Chop definitely mattered.

Did Urban Myer change OSU mantras and slogans #Gobucs?? Did Franklin change #Weare ,at State Penn?.. So. whats RU NATIONAL identity today?
#Ashera? ..you will have recruits and national fans going?..... "who" what???? Meaning..its not nationaly something thats associated currently with RU FOOTBALL...
Gobucs and Weare have been around forever. #chopnation was started with Flood and should die with Flood now gone.

You can't change something that a fanbase/students/players use to identify themselves with. Every time Green Bay gets a new coach, they don't sit down to think about what they can replace the cheese heads with. I like the chop. I know GS brought it to RU but I don't identify the chop with GS, I identify it with RU. Because that's what was there around the time RU became remotely competitive. You can hate it all you want. But RU didn't have any fans before GS, so most of the newcomers come to recognize the chop and associate it with RU. GL reversing it.

Our longest and most established tradition is a combination of losing and being irrelevant. I had no problem with GS's chop story which became the simple "chop". But, there is a new guy in town and he needs to be comfortable with everything he does. It is not like he is following a legend.

If Chris Ash is as arrogant as being implied by this post, then he won't give a flying f*ck about message posters questioning his every little decision made for the Rutgers football program.

I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt in hopefully leading RU football to success, but as a fan will conversely feel free to continue using the block R, chop, or whatever hashtags I feel like in support of this program.

I'm thinking you dislike Ash more than his slogans, we could've kept Flood and his dumb @ss chop and 1-0 mantra while losing every battle against Pitt, PSU, and even Temple but you'd be a happy camper just because you could run around yelling CHOP! The Flood era is done, get over it.

We should get rid of the Block R too. I mean Schiano invented it, and we have to get rid of everything from the old coaching staffs. And a block letter? How unoriginal. Time to get rid of that R, it has no tradition.

I couldnt stand Flood from day he was hired,it was a big mistake, wanted him gone.. I just dont think ASH is taking in consideration,or knows certain RU history(and its only recent fan base success, attendance),therefore completly attempting to rip away known mantras, slogans that recruits, fans identify Rutgers with now,is a mistake .Maybe after he establishes his own brand, wins on field..recruit battles..then okay..

Well, there is only one person that has even suggested that...and it's not Ash, it's you lol. Next thing you know folks will be implying that Ash wants to get rid of Scarlet in our school colors, lol.

So you're saying that Ash doesn't have the right to change mantras and slogans until he wins but you expect him to build a program based on a failed regimes messaging.

Ash came in with the promise that he would change the image and culture of Rutgers Football and we all liked that, yet you're pissed that he is actually doing it.

The only reason that 'Chop' survived is because Flood had no idea what he was doing, he just rode the Schiano wave. If Ash chooses to keep it I'm cool with it, if he doesn't I'm cool with that too.
