B1G set to announce 6th commissioner

It's nice to have confidence that it will be someone competent. As opposed to our Big East days when we knew the next commissioner would just be another buffoon from Providence

C’mon ...you didn’t like the providence mob ?

I miss Marrinato...lol.....In all seriousness, Tranghese was a good Commissioner...was too vested in the CYO schools unfortunately but as a commissioner of a P5 League - he'd be competent.. Aresco would be a solid choice as well but I see the new Commish being Silverman (TV Exec); the NW AD or Barry Alvarez as a long shot.

No..I am not ****ing kidding. Let's see...he only ruled the top BB conference in the Country for how many years?...He kept a Mega Conference together with many different objectives for how many years? He presided over how many NCAA BB Titles? He managed the THE EVENT at MSG each year. He had his faults (minimal emphasis in FB and protective of the CYO's).....but you ask any people in the know and Tranghese - even with with his faults - was VERY HIGHLY respected. Go speak with Jim Calhoun; Jim Boeheim; Rick Pitino; John Thompson..........

The BE Conference went to hell when Marrinato took over - not when Tranghese was presiding...

Any day of the week I will take (old) BE Conference Basketball over Big 10 BB..any day of the week...any minute of the hour.....

Any if you read my post above..I said Tranghese would be a good Commish for a P5 Conference as he wouldn't be vested with special interests as he was with the CYO Schools.

No I am not ****ing kidding. Tranghese resurrected a BE Conference that was fading and led the conference back to become the Premier BB Conference in the land. He presided over a Conference with FB / BB Objectives not aligning and held it together; presided over several NCAA Titles with UConn; Cuse and was very HIGHLY RESPECTED by many in the industry. Ask Calhoun; Pitino; Boeheim; John Thompson etc. And he also resurrected /elevated THE EVENT at MSG.

He certainly had his faults as I said in my original post ( minimal emphasis in FB; protective of the CYO's) but as a P5 Commissioner - with no special interests to protect - I think he'd be quite competent a la Mike Aresco.

The BE Conference's demise was when Marrinato took over and when ego maniacs like Pernetti thought he could dictate TV Right Values to ESPN.

Any day of the week, I will take the (OLD) BE Conference BB over the Big 10..any day of the week; not even close......

He neglected what could have been a really good football conference. And football drives the bus in college athletics

Very valid point. I don't know if he neglected football or was caught with his pants down when the ACC raided Miami; VTech and BC in the early 2000's. Probably both. Didn't Miami and VTech make BCS Championships when both were in the BE? What Tranghese should have done was to have 2 separate conferences under the BE Umbrella - for FB (and expand to 10-12 squads) and BB. But inevitably with a 8 team FB Conference and having 3 crappy teams in RU; Temple and UConn (in the early 2000's) - the BE Conference for FB was doomed. And similar to what the Big 12 has recently incurred with numerous defection of its schools, the same would have occurred with the BE Football Conference given the prestige; money and reputations of the other Conferences.

Where the Big East failed:

- Not voting in Penn State as a member bacj in the 80's. This was a school decision;not a Tranghese decision.
- Rumor had it that Miami acting as a broker, communicated that FSU wanted to leave the 9 team ACC back in the 90's for the BE and the BE Conference said no.

The above might have / could have propolled the BE to different heights but like I said, the Big 10 would have swooped up Penn State in due time and the same with Miami; FSU and VTech in the ACC. Too much money in those conferences for the BE to compete
