Big 10 payouts......Maryland gets the most of anybody

Manahan writes the article titles for sl. Thanks, it's better but still not accurate. It's Maryland gets paid the most of anybody INITIALLY, and because they were making the most initially and had the largest penalty initially. In the end everyone makes the same.

"Rutgers was coming out of the lower-tier American Athletic Conference, the reason for its low-ball Big Ten payment. The school did not release its first-year payment figure last week, but Traviolia put it at about $10 million."

If we had only waited until this year, the ACC would have been the "lower tier" conference.

"The Big Ten will soon enter a window of exclusive negotiations with its current TV rights holder, the ESPN cable network and network affiliate ABC. Some have suggested declining viewership on ESPN as consumers increasingly cut the cable could put a damper on the Big Ten’s contract position. But Traviolia remains optimistic."

“We’re very bullish,” he said. “We think we will be very successful. We need to be successful. Our programs depend on this revenue for their broad sponsorship of sports.”

the fact that the money evens out between Maryland and RU was made public, and most RU fans were already aware .... I thought it was an interesting read, and the first time I had seen the actual payout to RU for the first season...

In fact on a net basis that may not be correct. Maryland makes 24 plus 12 to help with penalty of 50 that was reduced to 31. Maryland made 5 in year one. Rutgers made 10 and paid 5 penalty correct? In that case they are the same year one. However Maryland is likely making more in years 2 through 6 as they start with a larger initial share which makes sense given that is where they were in the ACc. Everyone though is treated the same.

Yea we've seen the projections but this is an actual reporting confirming those projections. I don't expect the first few years to be much in the way of increases if it goes according to those projections.

we should expect that the payouts to Maryland be substantially lower than RU in a couple of years, maybe even the next season... then I will feel a bit better.

edit: Pmvon seems to think Maryland keeps getting more than RU, very confusing.

Yea I haven't really paid attention to Maryland's payout schedule just talking about ours and it's going to be in that 10-11.5M range for a few years.

Why would Maryland go below ru, they are starting at 24 and we are starting at 10? We both have a glide path to full payment. Why should Maryland get paid less than what they were making in previous conference?

If the big ten convinced unc for example, would they agree to lower than current payments?

I probably understood wrong at the beginning, but I thought that Maryland and RU were to be paid the same amount OVERALL, by the time we both got to full payments.... Maryland got an advance early on due to their large payout, but later on RU would get more money, so after 7 years or so, the dollars would be the same.... the way you explain it, I am off.... could be....

the article mentions front loaded, sweetened payout and Maryland having to repay back some of their money

quote:

"Perlman pointed out that when Nebraska begins receiving its full share in July 2017, its payments will far exceed those of Maryland, which will still be transitioning and still facing future repayment of the dollars it was advanced by the league."

I would think that a UNC might make a move, making less now, with the future money looking better in the big 10....

Wheezer, yes maybe on that point that Maryland is paying back the 12 but that could be amortized over many years. Even if done in 4 it reduces their payment by 3 a year. Considering this, Maryland got a worse than ru considering their then respective situations.

SL version would be "Are Rutgers regretting joining the Big Ten?"
