A big day in the NFL for former Rutgers players according to the October 16, 1922 Rock Island Argus and Daily Union of Rock Island, IL. The NFL Milwaukee Badgers defeated the Racine American Legion 20-0. Former Brown star Fritz Pollard, “… scored the first touchdown after 10 minutes of play receiving a 20-yard pass from (Paul) Robeson on the Racine three-yard line. Pollard and Robeson, both colored, were the stars on the Badger eleven.”
In addition to Paul Robeson at right end, former Scarlet players in the game were John Alexander at right tackle; Jim Dufft at right guard and Al “Budge” Garrett at left guard who was also the coach. The next day’s edition reported, “Milwaukee has signed Robeson, giant colored star, and has been strengthened greatly thereby. Robeson played with Akron last season. He is said to be one of the greatest all-around football players of all time. With Robeson on end and Pollard at halfback, Milwaukee has a team to be feared, as shown by its decisive victory over Racine last Sunday.”
