Bob Wenzel talks about his most memorable game at Rutgers and the RAC

No. Jeff Mitchell was the first hired. He was only replaced because he left coaching to join the family business in the Chicago area — he had set a deadline for himself to get a head-coaching job or move on and he stuck to it — Wenzel wanted very much for him to stay. Van Gundy had just finished assisting Providence to a record of 11-17 under Gordy Chiesa. That was his only year as an assistant coach. He had only been a graduate assistant for Pitino. His best claim to fame at the time was the fact that his father was a successful head coach at Genesse community college. (His father would later send Alvin Rich to RU.) He was not a sought after commodity. He was hired as the third assistant at RU, not a restricted earnings coach. In fact, there was no such thing as a restricted earnings coach then. And yes, his hiring as the third assistant was criticized. He proved the critics wrong by becoming the Xs & Os guy on the staff and was very popular with the players, but my point was about how his hiring was seen at the time. What I said was accurate.
Lots of bad info from me in my post, LOL.

A few thoughts....

I remember the "no room sideline" when the players toes were right on the sideline.

The fans behind the benches were standing, screaming and waving pom poms. Now ( no offense intended)....it"s older fans who normally sit and cheer.... they may cheer loudly, but, it's just not the same.
You are exaggerating.

Do you think "fans behind the benches were standing, screaming and waving pom poms" when we were 6-8 and hosting Duguense during the winter break that very same year?

Yes, there were student tickets and younger alums tickets on the benches side with the other side being the "premium" seats.. but after the change to cushy seats on both sidelines and increased ticket prices there have not been many exciting seasons and wins.

I will say the "new" student end-court arrangement is nowhere near as exciting as it was when the seats came down so far the bottom row was on the floor at the baseline. You could be asked to pull in your stretched out feet to give them more room to inbound the ball.

RU needs to play against more hated local rivals at The RAC .

The SHU game last season was the best atmosphere in a long time.

Schedule Sewercuse, Princeton and Yukon in upcoming seasons

Over-react much? I just said the Students used to have some of those side seats behind the benches and the RAC was louder for big games like that PSU game. Everyone knows they were moved out of that area and the seats were given to season ticket holders...mainly because Students only come out for big games or when the team is really good.

Now that post was an over-reaction to a minor disagreement and the "new" info you provide was covered in my post. How could you miss the middle paragraph?

Bottom line: you are blaming the less exciting atmosphere on the cushy seat people and that is NOT the problem.

One of the interesting memories that I have from that year is getting a chance to watch Eddie Jordan and Keith Hughes play one on one after practice. Jordan totally dominated him.

Our starting lineup was very small back then. I wonder how that team would fare against our current team, which is quite huge in comparison.

Guard vs power forward.. he should dominate. Maybe if Hughes was more like Magic or Lebron in using his arms and body to make room to dribble.. always bugged me to see Magic Johnson play point against Spud Webb bringing the ball up court and just sweeping Spud away with his off arm. Every sweep of that arm was a foul and Magic should have lost the ball on and bounce with Spud zipping around him to take it away.

They were always Bobsicles.- best RU event I was ever at......the noise was deafening

Yep and yep. Best sporting event I ever attended...until the RU-Louisville football game in 2006. However, no question the loudest event I ever attended, especially being in the student section with my psycho friends at the time.
