Top 5 all-time game at the Rac (for me)

So many games

Here is a few unsung ones

December 1981….rutgers beats at John’s and some guy named Chris Mullin (who had a gold game as a frosh)

The Missouri game with Earl Duncan no look to D-train for the uoset

The Rutgers win over Louie and boule in 1978 with Marv Albert on the call for NBC

The Rutgers Maryland game in March 2020….the most important win in the pike era…yes we were in the NCAA and f u covid …that win and Purdue cemtbed rhar it wasn’t going to be the same old Rutgers end of the year collapse under Pike…..

RU vs PSU in Bobby Wenzel’s first year to win the league title. Earlier a RU NovaRollie vs Tom and we won. I knew both coaches well as Rollies niece was my secretary and I was always tight with Joe and Tom. Used to wander over to Joe when he was doing color for radio. Gruninger really screwed Joe over and we ended up with Page. I was a guest at Pages’s summer camp and knew how bad the next few years were going to be. He was an athletic director not a coach.Really nice guy also. Did a bang up job when he was an AD. Funny story about his first camp. Page was lecturing the kids and how to act and speak if you get interviewed. He was dropping some complex polysyllabic words on the kids from nY, DC and Philly. One kid came over to me and asked me “what he saying” and I answered him that I had no idea what he was saying either.

Beating Indiana at MSG in B10 tournament- Sanders splitting two defenders to score
Obviously doesn’t qualify since not at the RAC, but still a great win

Most well played game was the St John's game during Chris Mullens freshman year early in the season there were oy 4 turnovers total in the game.

Taking into account Quality of opponent, drama of finish, stakes, crowd , ...
(only including games I was at)
1. '21-22 #1Purdue w Harper buzzer beater (craziest postgame ever, & led off many ESPN shows next day)
2 .'88-89 A-10 final over PSU (maybe the loudest crowd ever)
3. '91-92 OT over UNLV (biggest RU upset , my Dad & I ate next to UNLV team at Fuddruckers the night before)
4. '77-78 NIT win over Indiana St. ( I saw Bird hit the fan on the way out. .coulda played em in '79 Natty)
5. '78-'79 win over Syracuse w Louie & Bowie (1st time really back to national stage since Final 4)

I don't think this was even in my top 100. It was pure torture for 39:54 against a Q4 opponent.
That is,why you have to have two categories,
one for best games

and the other being best finishes

Sometimes a game will qualify in both areas

The Seton Hall game this year was a mess and doesn't do it
as a best game, for sure

And, when you look at it, we almost blew it in the final minute, so, all that this game is notable for, was the final basket

Believe we lost to Syracuse in 78/79 and won 77/78. Could be wrong but I think 78 was the last time we beat them. Didn’t beat for another 20 years I believe until the naked free throw guy. Good times.

Clearly remember the Larry Bird punch - Heckler was an RU fan wearing glasses with white tape affixed to one of the arms of the glasses (somewhat common and nerdy at the time). Larry cracked a punch - blood and glass on the floor (pre plastic lens era). This was by the locker room entrance by section 101/102.

That's fair
Also, a lot of you (to your credit) have been going to games at the Rac since 70s/80s - I only started in the early 2000's, so I missed 20-25 years of great games there

Somehow I missed numbers 2 and 4 but this is a great list. I think #5 was actually the ‘77-78 season. And as to #4, we had a clear path to the final four if we beat St. John’s in the Sweet 16. We had beaten them Twice during the season but lost that game. Penn would have been next and we would have been heavy favorites followed by Magic Johnson’s team.

#5 was 77-78. 78-79 we lost to St. John’s. You are correct Penn was next and very beatable.

Not mentioned, March 2003, Jerome Coleman bombing away to beat # 9 ND.

1st win against a top 10 team since beating WVU in 82.

A freshman named Calvin Wooten had 18

RAC was deafening!
Was that the year we should have beaten UNC in Chapel Hill but the Tarheels got the home whistle?

Coleman was on fire that game. Was living in DC and watching at a bar with a Dukie grad. I was so pissed after the loss.

GO RU

One of the most fun games was the ND/Troy Murphy game (mid/late 90s). The crowd was dogging him the entire game and Rashod Kent did a great job on defense. Murphy got T'ed up and almost thrown out. That was an enjoyable blowout.

One that came to mind first that I didn't see others was vs Ohio State 2023. Got revenge against them for the refs screwing us out at the buzzer. Won in OT.

Some people also don't realize how big of a game that was, especially because Ace Bailey was at the game and committed that night.

Wasn't around for the 1989 A-10 final vs. PSU
Nor the UNLV/Mizzou/WVU games of the 80's and 90's or the UF game w/Eli Carter going off
By all accounts, those were all next level, especially vs. the Nitts

But I'd rate this game a Top 5 for me at the Rac that I've seen live (only including wins)
List as follows

1. Purdue - 2021 (RHJ buzzer beater at mid court)
2. Nova - 2011 (Jonathan Mitchell 4 point play)
3. Seton Hall - 2024 (Dylan 3 ball at the buzzer)
4. Seton Hall - 2005 (Q free throw with no time remaining)
5. OSU - 2021 (Caleb block)

*** Honorable mention Maryland - 2019 as we broke the NCAA streak w/that game, 2017 Illinois w/DeShawn's late deep 3 and Seton Hall 2017 (got out to 16-0 lead)
*** Had tickets for Providence 2004 where Herve hit the winner at the buzzer, but got invited to Moving Out on Broadway, so I gave them away

Again, only going on games we won. Other incredible Rac games we lost include:
1. UConn - 2004 (up 10, place was rocking, they pulled it out at the end)
2. Nova - 2006 (Jimmy Inglis bank at the buzzer to send it to OT)
3. Syracuse 2005 where Q's 3 at the end rimmed out

What say you, what are the top Rac games, wins or losses, you've been to and how would you rank yesterday?
2019 was the 14-0 start on SHU,

2017 we came back from down 8 with 4 to go. Corey Sanders was electric. Stayed at Heldrich, and Went to hub city post game and asked if they had a good crowd. Bartender said “no one cares about that sh*t.”Glad that dump went out of business.

2001 was Coleman/Shields, 2003 was shields/douby, both fun years with 3 pt bombers that beat a lot of ranked teams at home and couldn’t buy a win on the road

Murphy ultimately fouled out and I was heckling him like crazy. Went back to some material I used when I watched my high school WMC beat Delby in the MCT a few years earlier

the 1991 game vs Temple right before the trip out to get thrashed in Vegas by UNLV

the same originally I believe was a Saturday but moved to a Friday night to accomodate the last scheduling and I mean in season scheduling of the UNLV game. RU jumped up to like a 18-2 lead and never looked back....one of the most fun games I have attended and often overlooked by Scarlet Faithful. RU had lost at McGonagle Hall by at least 20 the first meeting.

Playing Temple was always fun. When was the Choke-um Chaney incident? I remember those taunts during games.

remember a full student section attentive to team intros with everyone holding up newspapers...kids today have no clue what a newspaper is and might have mental breakdowns if ink gets on their fingers

Speaking of ND, and switching from men to women, 2001 54-53 victory over #1 ranked Irish - turned out to be only game ND lost becoming NCAA tournament champs that season. Got a bunch of my 5/6 th grade girls rec team to go

yep that was an incredible game and so sad to see how the program has fallen from that time and how Rutgers is now an afterthought as womens hoops is now at peak popularity

Game vs West Virginia in the early 80s for me. I believe they were ranked #6 and we beat them on CBS National TV when there were basically 3 networks and cable was relatively new. They disregarded fire codes and people sat on the steps making it an adventure to get out.

Also, Missouri around 1990 when we literally had to stand on our seats the entire game and you could not hear the person next to you.

Most of you young-uns’ will have no idea what I’m talking about but no a/c and packing them that tight made for a most unique game time experience.

Also, personally but not for a good reason, was the Lamizana banked three when I lept from my aisle seat (I had a good 2 ft vertical back then) in the top of the 100s, landed on the corner of the step, rolled my ankle, fell to the ground and rolled down about 10 aisles in excruciating pain while people were celebrating above me. If I was 20 pounds heavier, I might have bowled over the visitors bench and rolled onto the court… fun times.
I’ve always thought that WVU game too as it was probably the most people ever allowed in the RAC. End of year and actually a warm day. RAC held a lot more then both behind the baskets and behind the team.
Luckily I had student tix right behind RU bench. This was before teams took TO’s moving chairs on the Court. Heard everything Tom Young said. It was a wonderful basketball experience.

Another underrated RU win was beating WVU a year earlier at the RAC when one of the Neiberlines made a rebound shot at the buzzer.

Underrated RU loss was a one point loss to Duke with Gene Banks. Duke had another guy who was leading foul shooter in the country missed a crucial foul shot shooting into the student section. We almost got them.

PSU, UNLV and Missouri all wonderful games. Purdue win.

SHU was more of a relief!! lol!

I remember that 1991 Temple game well... was super excited because I went to Vegas, too. My first trip ever to Vegas. I've been there at least 25x since, most recently the tourney at MGM.

That UNLV team was unbelievable... would be ranked among the top 5 teams ever if it didn't get upset by Duke in Final Four

A heart break loss to Iowa with a incredible banked 3 pointer from the left corner in front of the students.

I remember in that 77/78 win over Cuse, the orange had their little pep band that we stuck way up in the top couple of rows. Whatever they were playing, our crowd, in beat with the music chanted 'syracuse sucks.'

02-03 Syracuse stands out to me because we brought our 2 yr old to his first game. We were heading up to our seats in the 300s when someone from RU hit a three early and the place went ballistic and scared the crap out of my son. I was doubting my parental judgement at that point but by the 10 min mark he was dancing to the band and cheering his little butt off. He landed up at RU and played drums in the pep band.

Others of course would be the 89 PSU game, Troy Murphy game, RHJ buzzer beater, 2017 SHU, Missouri. I wouldn’t put this SHU game up there.

And they continued playing the song. There were student seats in 300 back then and we jumped all over it.
An incredibly loud game, maybe the first of its kind.

Me too. Was my favorite win ever until beating PSU in the A10 tourney championship in 1989. Was in the student section as a sophomore and the RAC was simply insane with #6 WVU in the house along with CBS. That team likely would've made the tourney had it been 64 teams (was 48 that year), as we were 19-9/9-5 with two top ten wins (UCLA and WV) and a generally tough schedule. One funny comment: a couple of guys I knew stole the Scarlet Knight's head in the insanity after the game.

Haven't really thought about ranking the best wins since 1989, but can easily say that Saturday's SHU win wouldn't make the top 25. We didn't play particularly well against a mediocre team and the only really memorable part was Dylan's gamewinner, which certainly has to make the top 5 RU gamewinners ever (although behind his older brother's against #1 Purdue, which might be my favorite post 1989 win).

Then what were 24 better wins at home during that time period?
Admittedly my view is skewed as I only started going to games consistently in the last 20 years, so I missed a good 15 years from the late 80s to the early 2000s

But a lot of people are acting like there's been some stellar bball played here the past 3 decades
There's a reason we didn't make the tourney for 30 years - and it's not b/c of bad breaks or bad luck

Correct. Rutgers was very mediocre to outright terrible in basketball for a long time.

It was a terrible game, for both teams, with the exception of the final shot
The game of basketball is often won on a final shot,
Happens in the NBA daily
It is not on any best game list
You are putting a horrible game way too high
