Basketball BREAKING -- Rutgers senior guard Paul Mulcahy plans to enter the transfer portal, he announced:

Believe me or not. My insight is solid.

It is about the perceived attention going to the future recruits vs the current roster.
I believe you, at least that it's a major factor among several.
These guys have big egos that have been fed their whole lives by almost everyone around them.

Had to be a cumulative effect for Paul too. Cam last year, GG this year, Ace and maybe Dylan next year.
Plus his spring after season had to be humbling.
Maybe even conversations with PIke about not playing much point, maybe even not starting.
All of that and if someone said "I'll give you 30+ mins at point guard"

Pikiell is living in the stone age. His koom-bah-yah approach to locker room chemistry has screwed us time and time again. Myles, JY, Mathis defecting probably moved us from a Sweet 16 team to a first four. Holding on to Rieber, Miller, and Palm for an extra year cost us a bid. We have been sleepwalking through this offseason and now have 4 open scholarships and a starter returning from ACL surgery. We are essentially 8 deep at this very minute and that consists of a frosh PG, and an unproven redshirt
Pikes the man. This is a very silly post.

But we might have Dylan, Ace, Griffiths, and two walkons for a year…so there’s that.

Ummm

Myles left for education reasons

Guess you missed that one

He also knows that the entire roster has been tampered with and schools are trying to poach his players. I wonder if he is doing the same? He may be but something tells me he's not. If not he is putting Rutgers at a disadvantage.

In a post game basketball interview, athletes are asked basketball questions, and are expected to discuss basketball, not proselytize their faith. He did it more than once. It was cringy. He's the one that put it our there.
So….that is what he believes and finds meaning in it….then more power to him

Again….who are you to judge ?

Seems like you are one of those who preach tolerance and acceptance until one disagrees with you

This is what he said in March

“Pike's the best coach in the country; he's an incredible person.” Mulcahy said in March, after Rutgers’ season-ending loss to Hofstra in the NIT. “You play a year for him or however long, he's got you for life. He believed in me when a lot of others didn’t. He’s taken a lot of heat because of me. He does it for everybody. He believes in all of us. He deserves all the things he worked for. He’s going to get us to higher places. I’m so thankful that I got to play for him. There’s a lot going on in college basketball, but he’s the best coach. I’m so grateful for him.”

1. Why is this happening?
2. Paul got way to much guff from fans.
3. Played his asssss off
4. Has no RU legacy now. One year rental guy.

Well, Pike certainly is up at bat now. Let’s see what he comes up with.

The ru legacy will be interesting . He was going to surpass Jordan as the all time assist leader and punch his ticket into the rutgers hall of fame.
Not sure if he gets in now
Jordan and Paul belong in the same bucket…for different reasons.

There was always big money involved it's just bigger and on the table now. Also, I'm hearing that money is not the driving force behind Paul's decision.
If his unhappiness was the main factor, he would have been long gone.

I have no insider knowledge at all. BUt to me, that message says he wants to be a point guard. If that's the case, and he was told that he won't be playing PG here any more, than he did what was best for him.
In the right offense, Paul is a great point guard with excellent court vision and basketball IQ. Oddly, I thought playing alongside Gavin and Simpson, he could have been that for us. I feel like the addition of Noah was probably the straw that broke Paul's back.

If that’s the case, he should have announced he was leaving two months ago, so Pike could find a legit replacement.

I keep reading this, and everyone thinks a kid should make a decision immediately. For example, the day we got Noah, Paul should have transferred out. To me, Paul just isn't that kid. He gave himself time to cool off, think it through, speak to the people he trusts, and make a well-informed decision. I know it sucks for the team, but it's definitely a more mature way to make a decision.

Not necessarily. Not everyone is in "I'm getting the hell outta here as soon as possible," mode.

Idk what's in Mulcahy's mind but it is possible that he was unhappy but also struggled with the decision to return to RU or entering the portal.

It doesn't have to be an either or thing. Both can be true.

If he's been struggling with the decision, the team wouldn't expect him to be back and the experts/insiders wouldn't say he's 99% back.

If you're the captain of a boat and the boat has left the dock already for the next season, you don't jump into the water and swim to shore leaving the boat adrift. The time to depart was earlier. Aka when the portal was still open.

Idk how any self respecting Rutgers fan can have any respect for this kid abandoning the team this late.

All the BS aside what RU needs and always needed was $ and not words.

A captain of a boat and a captain of a college basketball team are drastically different. One would leve people at sea to literally die. One would leave a basketball team a little short at guard.

One would screw over a team he represented for 4 years and the man who stuck by him even when he was playing like literal horseshit*

I'm within my rights to make a comment on a public statement, as are you and Paul. Proselytizing one's particular brand of superstition doesn't earn them a free pass.
