Brown flew in his appearance in the 400m with a time of 45.67. His result was just .05 seconds away from his personal best and school record of 46.62 set last season at the Big Ten Championships. The reigning Big Ten indoor champion currently holds the top time in the conference and second-fastest time overall nationally.

There is a typo in the SK.com writeup- Brown's school record time is 45.62.
Brown is the favorite to win the Big Ten again. Hopefully he will then go on to a super NCAA championship- his winning time today currently is the second best nationally.
Last year he was jinxed for the nationals sitting out the indoor due to an injury despite one of the best indoors time going in. He also had an unexpectedly weak performance in the outdoor regionals and failed to qualify for the nationals despite a top time going in.
Could he be the first individual NCAA champion for Rutgers in T&F?

I started a thread on the Football Board to draw more attention to Brown's performance. Great to see him put out such a fast time early in the year. I'm not as close to the program as I used to be but he seems to be a bit in redemption mode this year after the hiccups of last year you mention.

I find it interesting that Brown only ran 1 400 meter race prior to this performance. In most of the meets he was running 60 and 200 meter races I guess to build speed. It is also interesting that he was on the foursome that yesterday set a new school record in the 4x400 relay with two freshman and without the second best 400 meter runner on the roster (Griffith)

I thought that Elliot Quow won the 200m NCAA outdoor championship while I was in school - maybe 1983?

I looked it up - you are right about Quow- he won the 200 meters in 1983. I had forgotten about that or never knew because coverage was spotty with no on line options.

Brown is going to have a great career at Rutgers and It will be a joy to watch him run down the B1G and hopefully the NCAAs.

Kid has a shot to help RU to a couple of individual and team titles over the next 6 seasons (indoor/outdoor). Hopefully indoor 2016 he just got a little nervous and uses that this year to his benefit!

Brown already has 2 B1G titles as a freshmen. His time last weekend was the best in the B1G this season by .72 seconds so he should be a big favorite. How he does nationally may depend on how much he can improve his PBs of 45.62 indoors and 45.27 outdoors both set in the B1G championships last year. Brown has the second fastest time this season but ,65 seconds behind the leader from Tezas A&M.
His PB outdoors would have placed him tied for 4th in the NCAA outdoor championship last spring and was the 5th best time going into the champtionship. He may need to run under 45 seconds to win an outdoor championship.
Regarding Tokyo, the medalist in the 400 meters in Rio were all under 44 seconds so significant improvement will be needed to be a factor. While I would not rule that out, it is too early to talk about that level of competition.
