Camp Depth Chart-Laviano/Allen Co-Starters

I don't get Allen being marked down as co-first string QB before a snap has happened at an official practice. Yeah, he says he's sending a "message", but part of how that can be interpreted is: "I'm standing behind the guy I brought in come hell or high water." Ryan Cubit anyone?

Well, it's not like this is the first time Ash and staff have seen these guys since the end of Spring camp. Every day is an evaluation, whether on the field or in the weight room, and he apparently has two guys he feels have earned the right to run with the first team right now.

Not to go to far off topic here but I think this is Tannehill's make or break year. He has weapons now. I will certainly be watching.

I think it's premature to suggest the coaching staff has "passed" on Rettig.

Having said that, from what I'm reading, I think Laviano's the most likely to get named as the starting QB and that it will happen fairly soon.

That was my take too.

Allen and Laviano have the quickest feet, and that's about the main thing this staff has seen the most of. Hopefully they keep their eyes open when football playing starts as we've had too many years of green jersey decision making.

It would have made NO Sense to make Allen anything but starter or co Starter on day 1, otherwise it would have defeated the whole purpose of bringing him in to light a fire under the other QBs.

3 different coaching staffs have now sat Rettig on the bench. Time to let it go guys.

Not really so Ed. LSU he was a freshman and wasn't going to play. Flood--well it speaks for itself as to his evaluation and open mindedness.

Kid may be a square peg in a round hole here but just from the eye test of when he has played showed, he has shown skills. What he needs really is game time and somewhat of a long leash.

Flood could have done that in the second half of last year and we would have the answers. Another painful part of last year.

In less than one summer, Allen has equalized.

Therefore, Allen should be the starter.

I disagree. These are professional Coaches. They know what they're doing.

In fact, I think they've been quite deliberate and methodical in their assessments.

Is Hicks at camp? Surprised Denman is on the second team, BUT, this could be a situation where we are incredibly thin after the first 5 or 6 OL and in case someone goes down Denman can play multiple positions where Heeman cannot?

How you go about your business, attention to detail, how you present yourself, ability to ask good questions, how you deal with your teammates.

Do you really think Heeman was promoted to 1st string in order to motivate Denman.

I don't think this is about motivation. Coach Ash has instituted a culture of competition i.e. everything is a competition. So I don't think they need to motivate guys by demoting them.

Denman is a senior. The only way he should play is if he's head and shoulders better than his back-up. If it's close, then you use playing time as an investment in the future.

Same goes for Muller. Especially since RG is the easiest position on the line. I wouldn't be opposed to playing, Krimin at RG.

Guess it's semantics. I think of "summer workouts" as including all of what you just said.

OK let's go over this again. He was hurt the year he went and practiced, just practiced WR. He wasn't going to play that year anyway, because he was injured(and one of the best QB's in college football was the starter) so he took practice at WR.

I don't see how this in any way possible disqualifies him from being a capable QB. That is unless you think Laviano would have been anything more than, 3rd string on TCU's squad. If you think that, then you are delusional on Laviano's true talents.

This doesn't surprise me. As much as Laviano wasn't the guy last year with the pro set, he seems more suited to the type of offense Ohio St. has run.

One thing is for certain, if you aren't the starting QB, you better still be ready play.

I think Laviano has the edge and Allen will be the back-up.
Hayden doesn't seem to be working out and might think about dropping down
before using up another year of eligibility. But think that would have happened by now
so he's have a better chance of starting at a FCS school.
Hicks not listed makes me wonder just what his roll will be, 3rd string or reclaim his rotation spot.

There's still time for those not in the two deep to bump someone from it and those thought of as second team to make the presumed starters become their back-up.

I do expect to see a QB transfer and maybe some others because they feel they won't be getting the type of playing time they want and their future as a Scarlet Knight looks like they will be practice players sitting on the bench game-day.

I know it's only one practice, but it's quite telling. Of course I would expect Laviano at age 21, to exude maturity.

However, I don't hear the other buzz words like his intelligence, savvy, experience, and accuracy.

Something tells me that Flood and Ash had and have all the answers they needed. As a fan I knew what Laviano brought to the table and like every position on the team I hoped that newcomers like Rettig were better than the incumbents. This way the team gets better. Evidently, that was not the case.

Coaches who se players in practice and review practice and game films do not hope the starter is more deserving. They should know. Maybe the painful part of last years QB competition was simply that Rettig was not the answer?

To be more precise, the 6-foot-2, 221-pound redshirt junior sounded like someone willing to take ownership of his past mistakes.

Not that it takes a lot to have more class lol. I always back the players and take shots at those who take shots at the players (typically the QB's). You know who you are. I'll point you out later.

No need to make comments like these just because some of our fans take shots at Laviano. Just tell them to stop and take the high road. I think Rettig actually looked very good in the Pro style and this Offense just is not a fit for him. But maybe he will light it up the next 4 weeks so let's see what happens.
