Can this board ever stop bashing whoever is our starting QB?

I know the answer but please give it a rest. This has been going on since Teel and probably earlier.I am surprised by some of of older fans who seem to be level headed in many areas but just cannot stop themselves from bashing the QB's. I will not mention names but a fan in the transfer thread is killing Laviano but he also once said Phil Simms was a bad QB so my respect for his opinions on QB's is pretty low. For those of you young guys Simms went 22-25 in his first Super Bowl and then a few years later was on a record setting pace and the Giants were 10-0 when he got injured. Hostetler came in and did a serviceable job but the Giants won that Supper Bowl with Defense and ground and pound. Yet, many Giants fans were all on the Hostetler bandwagon and hated SImms. Sound familiar? Yeah that same guy is killing Laviano right now.

Listen, Eli Manning was thoroughly trashed by Giants fans right up until he won the Super Bowl (substitue Phil Simms and you get the same results). Then he was bashed the next year until he won his second Super Bowl. Guess what, he is good when he has time and WR's who can get separation and has a run game to complement him. There are very few elite QB's in this world. Then there are a lot of good QB's who can look very bad when they have no time, no running game and no WR to throw to.

When we played the best teams this year and did not have Caroo getting open, we struggled as a team. Not just Laviano but everyone. They stuffed the run. They were on Laviano in 2 Mississippis (even sooner against Nebraska) and nobody was getting separation. Yes, there were also times that Laviano missed open WR's. I saw Eli do that a few times against the Jets last week and he is in his 30's with way more big game experience.

What about the Michigan State game? WSU? MD? Laviano looked pretty darn good in those games. So stop the bashing. In my opinion it makes a lot of you look like you know nothing at all about the game. Don't get me wrong, I would have definitely tried Rettig this season but stop looking silly with the Laviano bashing. It's a negative and does not help our team win games.I think it actually hurts.

As for Flood himself, I did not agree with his style to leave QB1 in the game come hell or high water. But many of our same fans killed Schiano for the 2 QB platoon so either way the HC is screwed with fans when it comes to the QB position.

Most people were not killing the QB but rather the coach and his refusal to try something else (Rettig) when the starter was not performing, (ie going many, many games without throwing a TD pass.) It was different last year when we had no serviceable backup but this year the coach himself said the starter was too close to call. Then the future backup did a very good job in his first start/first game when the future starter violated team rules and the law, yet we never really saw him again.

Hence the frustration

It goes back to Fortay v. Lucas in my memory.
And it is miserable.

Remember the old adage that has more than a grain of truth: "The most popular player on a team is the back-up quarterback."

An all-conference QB can turn a mediocre program into a great one real quick. Let's face it, besides Senior Nova and the second half of Teel's senior season, we haven't had an above average QB in a long time.

Actually, I think it really took off when Schiano decided to start his New OC's son, a True Frosh Ryan Cubit over Chad Shwenck (sp)..

This is what you get when you have decades of green QBs coming in and playing in the hopes they play solid by their Jr/Sr year vs. having solid proven upperclassmen starting with somewhat experienced underclassmen waiting for their turns.

I remember those days, but Graber gave Lucas a chance when Fortay struggled and vice versa. I think it helped them both. Lucas had a decent career after getting PT in his redshirt freshman year and Fortay would not have had that great comeback against VT if he did not get some time off the field to clear his head.

Au contrare- there was tons of killing the QB and not all of it in good taste.

Groucho did a great rendition of this board's theme song-" Whatever It Is, I'm Against It".

As a Rutgers fan you must realize after all of these years that the answer every year is to put in the back up QB. The back up is always better and whoever our horrible coach is, he is just to stupid to see that there is a amazingly great back up QB sitting on the bench and if he just puts him in we will win games in bunches.

Every sport has a position that is lightning rod for fans. Clearly, the QB is that position in football. Success and failure usually has the QB as the major contributor.
It may not be fair, but it is what it is.

Disagree. I think maybe you're projecting how you felt about it on others.

While it's true that some people had a measured, reasonable, logical approach to the situation and simply felt that Flood was being stubborn about Laviano/Rettig, there were lots of people ceaselessly, mindlessly killing Laviano. It was happening constantly and in many cases stupidly (situations where the blame obviously lay elsewhere). Basically, it had become an unthinking habit with a fair number of people.

Given the nature of the bashing, it's also obvious that those same exact people that incessantly bashed Laviano would've incessantly bashed Rettig had he been the starting QB. Basically, some people are unable to control their emotions over a freaking football game and act like ass-hats every game. The QB often bears the brunt of such ass-hattery.

Which is why I said "most people" and not all. It was not a huge # of people that were killing Laviano and regardless it goes with the territory. They get way too much credit and way too much blame. RU fans are no different in that regard than any others.

Terms like "most people" and "not a huge #" are kind of amorphous in this context. My general feeling was that there was widespread ass-hattery about the QB. Culminating in the mass brain fart in the stadium with fans booing Laviano and/or Flood, at the exact time Laviano was retaking the field after getting hurt on a vicious hit delivering a third and long pass for a first down.

nobody gives a **** what this board thinks. stop whining.

1st of all this board doesn't exist in a bubble. This happens at all message boards, for all teams!

I wish that some vocal people here would dial it down a few notches and stop pretending that these are multimillionaires playing in the NFL. However, that doesn't mean that they shouldn't be allowed to post their opinion, just try not to be a complete jerk about it.

There is nothing wrong posting that someone else might give us a better chance to win. Personal attacks are not needed however.

Just my 2 cents.

Um. That's how most football fans act. Especially when your QB stinks and no other alternative is considered by the coaching staff.

Agreed. I don't hold out much hope it will happen (that people will refrain from being complete jerks about the QB), but it would sure be nice if they did.

Don't you people feel like clowns bashing the qb given your history?
You spent the past 2 years bashing CF for playing Nova instead of Laviano.
This year you bashed CF for playing Laviano.

Quarterback is the most important position on a football team.As such they will get the most credit or criticism depending on the won/loss record.Rutgers is a mid level football program playing against elite competition in the B1G East division.Without a playmaker at quarterback the results will remain disappointing and fans will continue to show their displeasure at games and on message boards. The reaction of Rutgers fans is no different than what happens in the NFL or other colleges.

Stupid OP. Every football fan in the country criticizes their starting QB not named Tom Brady. Even Aaron Rodgers, although, his wife got a lot of the blame. At least Rutgers fans don't go after significant others....

OH WAIT. Tom Savage's girlfriend kept tom from being the first in the building after his freshman year...

Logic is never a roadblock to the haters. With haters, self-recognition and self-awareness are in short supply and rationalization skills are abundant. So the answer to the OP's question is no, the haters on this board cannot stop bashing our starting QB.
