Disappointment or reality on our small fanbase

This trend of leaving early was there for minny , and even to a slightly lesser extent with ucla

The reality is , the football game is NOT the event on game day for a decent chunk of our fan base …the tailgating matters a lot more to a third of our non student base and for the students …iits aboht being a part first and the game to the fringe students , is as much about making an appearance

It’s a Process …this year , the number of fans in the seats this year was the highest in a long long time . Big check mark…especially with so many nooners

But It’s going take time to get them to arrive earlier and stay the duration .

We we slowly getting there …and becoming more B1G….will take more time ….and more time that I would like
Didn’t see it at Minny. Remember joking about traffic leaving that I should’ve left early.

Everyone doesn't have Iphones. I have the NWS website saved on my browser for weather.
  • In the US, iPhone has a 58.81% market share
  • As of 2024, Android has a 70.93% global market share

Not sure why you brought up global market share here. iPhone is expensive compared to Android. But I think the iPhone market share in the TRI states is higher than 59%.

I don’t see the season ticket number increasing next year. Going back to the original post, we have a small, loyal base. Most of the balance are casual fans….or worse, freebies. The freebies won’t buy season tickets…they are local pee wee teams and Boy Scout troops and shit like that. And there is really no incentive for the casuals to go all in with season tix. They can buy on stub hub for a fraction of the real price (especially when considering required donations). We will be stuck in the 20ish range until we make a big splash kind of season. 7-5 or 6-6 won’t do it, nor will 8-4. We have to win big games and get exciting. I’m actually more worried about the loyal base shrinking. Most of the base is either pretty old folks who have been around forever or they are somewhat old like me and they’ve been around for 15-20 years. For some reason we keep coming back, but some are dying off and some move away, etc. We are not likely going to be adding to the base for a while…if we ever do get over the hump.

Outside of the Wisc game, it was a very entertaining season. We found a. Watchable offense. The D needs to get it back to last year’s level. But we can hang with anyone. I expect ticket sales to go up slightly. I don’t see it going down.

That’s the unfortunate reality. Millions of people, tens of thousands (or more?) of whom are alums and yet we can't come particularly close to filling the building. I take solace that our attendance is a lot better than any other northeast corridor school.

the student section was absolutely packed til halftime..they showed up but why bother to even do that if you are 75% gone by the closing drive
They have short attention spans and cellphone coverage is spotty so they have to leave the stadium to watch their tick Tok videos.

The product was solid this season and we only laid one egg. Team will be better.

We play Penn State and Oregon at home. Penn State fans alone will drive an increase, as they will buy season tickets for the Penn State Game and sell the rest. Playing Oregon should also drive fan interest. I think we see a small increase, especially because Penn State and Oregon games will command a huge premium.

I agree the product was generally better this year. But it doesn’t change my opinion on season tix. We have a couple good home games next year but for the casuals it would be better to scalp for good seats than to buy season tickets in poor location. Penn state fans have no risk of getting locked out of the stadium and would be foolish to buy season tix for that game. I get your points Al, but I think we will be flat or slightly down. I will be back…I’m an addict…but I don’t think we built any real momentum and getting to the odor eaters bowl is not what it used to be.

isnt the non conference schedule pretty bad right now and we have 1 more bad team to fill

Ohio
Miami Ohio
???
The downside to season tickets is the expected pathetlically weak OOC we will play. At least we had the promise of an old Big East foe coming to SHI the last few years.

I feel like the admin is giving us season ticket holders the RU Screw with the OOC strategy selected. At least have one P5 team on the schedule. We've got BC in a couple of years and that's it. I'd even be happy with UConn and Temple if we're going to play the Little Sisters of the Poor.

You wanted P5 but ok with UCONN? If you are ok with UCONN, then you should be ok with our schedule. Ohio is a much better team.

Spot on .
Need some excitement that will juice the program. Losing 41 straight games to ranked teams is not getting it done.

Plenty of Penn State Fans bought tickets when we sucked. They will still buy tickets now that we’re competitive. There are so many in New Jersey. They’re like Rats. And Rutgers is a much easier trip than schlepping to Happy Valley.

The Texas Arizona bar in Hoboken used to be a Rutgers Bar, but it is now a Penn State bar. I’m planning to add to my total and I’m sure others will as well.

We win Saturday and win the bowl game, and we’ll be slightly up next year, imo.

sometimes collegiate name recognition overrides football strength for OOC....I would much rather have Temple and UConn as OOC foes than Miami or Miami (OH) ..
Do you mean Ohio? Miami has a chance making CFP

I made a post on the RT 2 weeks ago about adding seat backs to a lot of the seats and shrinking capacity 5-10% because of it. I think we need to quickly pivot toward fan comfort, not asses in seats. I think in the last 15 years there was 1 maybe 2 games where you couldn't actually get a ticket. I would be happy with 48k capacity with seat backs in the lower bowl minus student section and maybe the uppers.
Brilliant idea, and I agree. The new Ryan Field (Northwestern) will hold 35k.

Al,

If you truly believe NJ psu fans will buy Rutgers season tickets over PSU season tickets because “Rutgers is a much easier trip”, I have some beachfront property in Kansas I’d like to tell you about..

One of the most absurd statements you’ve made in the last 24 hours. I’m not sure you understand just how little state Penn cares about us.

No Penn State fan buys Rutgers tickets over Penn State tickets, if traveling four hours to watch a game is a viable option. But many are not willing to make that investment in time and money.
There are roughly >500K Penn State living alumni, and only 107K can fit in Beaver Stadium.

Tickets and hotel are expensive. Whereas a trip to Rutgers stadium is within an hour away if you live in Jersey or Eastern PA, and can be done as a day trip.

Most don’t care about Rutgers at all. But there are always outliers. Some who live in New Jersey, hope Rutgers does well, except when they’re playing Penn State. At least one had a Rutgers premium subscription for the longest time to keep tabs on us. I got a kick out of that one.

I think you are right on the money with diehard or real fans. The rest are just casual fans. One day I would love to know how many actual “paying” fans are in the stands. Not how many are distributed.
Winning is the only answer.
Serious question, I do not know if I am classified as a die hard fan or a casual fan? A little on my background. I did not go to Rutgers. How I got involved with the team is I worked in New Brunswick and a few of the guys I worked with were RU Alum. We started tailgating together in roughly 1992-1993 and have not stopped since. In the beginning the ONLY reason to attend the games was to drink and see college coeds. Most of us were not even married back then. Fast forwards through Marriages, Kids, divorces, seeing our kids go to college, COVID, and now many of us are in our late 50's and early 60's. Our peak attendance at our tailgates was around 2010- 2015 when most of us had college age kids and our TG peaked at 50-60 people. We were declining in numbers before covid but the pandemic knocked out more than 50% of our group. Sadly we are down to the last core holding of maybe 4-8 people at a game. This last game we were down to only two people. While I love going to the games, I have to be honest tailgates are not much fun with two people. I really don't know how many more seasons I have left in me to make the trek to Piscataway but I am hoping Greg can get the team figured out and at least we get something similar to 2006 one last time!

In my old seats, the two seats in front of me were owned by two penn state jagoffs who only showed up for psu games and the last home game of the season. They were insufferable. You'd like them.

I mean I do not know what the people of NJ and the Rutgers community wants. I get that Illinois is not a sexy name and a late season game vs a mediocre Michigan or USC would bring in 50K today. Overall attendance was okay..maybe approaching 40K-423Ktops, hard to tell... I sort of expected that. However my ire is what happened as the game wore on. Students showed up in huge numbers which is impressive but they started to filter out in the 3rd and inexplicably in a close game in the 4th, I would say we lost about 75% of the student sections. Not much better elsewhere. I think maybe 20-25K left in the stadium in such a dramatic down to the wire game. How is that possible? Look I get it was cold and windy but this was far from any of the coldest games..highs still were in the upper 40s yet peeps clueless dressed like it was comfortable fall day. Or maybe they just loved to get trashed and drink cold drinks all day and bombed which is definitely noticable. I get leaving early down 35-0, actually ahead...its a what the **** moment.

Just a shame to see tons of empties late in the game and lack of crowd noise on the previous Illinois drive where they took the lead. I think the constant use of the scoreboard music has neutered the ability of building any crowd noise. Great early in the game, not so much later.

Or is the reality we have a hardcore base of 20-25k and that is basically it. I tend think this is where I land. Not enough people care about RU football. We will always have this hardcore diehard base but beyond that, we will get a shit ton of fans for early season night games with big atmospheres but the following takes a hit game after game. I get the team went through a funk but my issue is if you are there already wouldnt you be interested in the outcome. Its apparent the students could care less about wins or losses besides that hardcore group you saw.

It’s tough to grow a program when you simply lack the hardcore fanbase numbers the rest of the conference has. RU has been in the Big 10 a decade, mostly losing season but it’s apparent people may only care if the team is going 10-2 which seems very unrealistic so here we are. Getting 40-42K a game but yet half of them leaving before the game is over whether the team is losing or winning
you’re being kind…it was hardly “cold” and the wind has been worse….so i was stunned at the # of people leaving early as well (to the point of giving them the old “beat the traffic” line as they passed by) BUT it’s like this all over the country now as we saw at Virginia Tech this season

So it sounds like psu fans will buy a ticket to just our game. Why on earth would they pony up for season tickets?

I remember hearing that kinda stuff with Pitt when they played them and Notre Dame, but it was also 10+ years between matchups of both.

I just don’t see any opposing fans of any program buying season tickets at Rutgers for our game, state Penn or not
