Disappointment or reality on our small fanbase

Lol what other schools can you park within 100 yards of the stadium for $40. I will hang up and listen. Maryland you have to park at their version of the RAC. Wisconsin doesn't have tailgate space. Northwestern has 1 parking lot. Pedo State you ain't parking close.
Ah..maybe THAT'S it..too easy to hang around and party and too easy to get out and leave lol.. kidding of course..kinda.

This x1000. The stadium ****ing sucks. It’s an AWFUL experience from top to bottom. The DJ chaos sounds ridiculous even on TV and not something you hear at other stadiums.

Why does our production have to have ADHD levels of nonsense? None of our conference brethren or the SEC does this crap.
I think this whole thing of Sopranos, Jersey Shore, Guido, EDM music is just an awful thing that they are pushing Rutgers athletics to be associated with. OK i get the Sopranos thing...its okay for the entrence but thats it..move on, it was how many years ago..we also are not nyc...we are rutgers we are from NJ

I didn’t go today because my daughter had a basketball game at 10am and I wouldn’t have made it in time from where I live. I watched the entire 4+ hour slog on tv.
My first thought after the last play was thank GOD I didn’t go to that disaster.

Not exactly a product worth investing time and money for 4 hours + commute, tailgate, etc

the problem is alot of those schools have other options downtown and cater to the football crowd. RU does not. Its like they are parking in downtown New Brunswick and taking the bus and dropped back off in area with tons of mid scale family eateries or bars...they are dropped off at the rac which is still situated in the middle of a russian hellhole despite them having a couple of business there

RU has a great tailgating scene but beyond that no connection to new brunswick...there are literally no people or students walking around before gameday in new brunswick

We sucked for 10 years, were good for 5 and then sucked for another 10. The stadium is filled with casual fans. I sit in the old student section, which is king of the idiot parents who get into their seat end of first quarter, get their kids food after a time out, then leave with 5 minutes left in the 3rd quarter. Why bother coming?

I think I was the only one getting up to yell on 3rd downs but I have to say everyone in my group today hates the train horn. It's awful. I cannot have a conversation with someone during the game, even in stoppages in play. My kids don't want to go anymore because of the horn. My friends don''t like the DJ BLASTING music every single down moment between plays.

All that being said, winning solves a lot of this. Our program sucks ass when comparing it nationally. Even the bad bad school peers like an Indiana, Northwestern, Kansas etc have fallen into a 10 win season, conference championship game etc.
have to say maybe it was the weather, but i was wearing a knit hat instead of a baseball hat and it seemed the noise bothered me more today than in the past 14 years... its just getting too much and too much over hype......ever single down i dont need to hear a 15 min song clip and on a meaningless down to MAKE SOME NOISE...the Ozzy, Horn, 10 second clip and frankly the cannon all need to be reconsidered... For those traditionalists move the cannon to a roof top platform and HIGHLIGHT it like other schools do... it seems as an afterthought and probably scares the jesus out of anyone in the immediate section...thank being said the production has gotten better just seems the band is forgotten over premixed 15 second clips..

oh and leaving the game walking down the road that is the boardwalk....they for some reason have the busses headed down that way so only one side for walking..thousands crammed in and to make matters worse you couldnt really cut into the side of the yellow lot part of the way because they are loading a giant coca cola truck at games end cutting into the walking traffic even more..why...get that shit out of here before the game ends, I know these are little things but they matter...also always wonder why the top level or audi club does not have its own level out of the stadium taking you from the top to the bottom,,,why isnt there a giant stairwell...why does the upper tier have to merge with the bottom tier to create a rough situation.

The crowds of pre-2017 have not returned. I'm in 128. Many long time season tix did not renew post Ash/ Covid. Seems to be tix brokers. Different faces each game. Leave early too. Mostly Empty row 33 4Q

the cannon clearly is an after thought the past decade. It had been a highlight of RU football. The horse needs to pick up its game..we have a horse yet it wont even make it past midfield and meekly comes out for tds. Marty who was the horse from 2017 to I think 2019 was the best horse ever better than Lord Nelson. Yes this white one is better than the travesty brown one that was uncontrollable but we need to fix the horse

It has nothing to do with Parking, Train Horn or DJ, marketing or anything else. It comes down to winning and losing. If this team was 9-1 and in the playoffs the place would be packed the entire game.

Bottom line- over the last 24 years the team has had a few good seasons, a handful of average seasons and a bunch of bad seasons. Rutgers is lucky to have the 25k die hard fans that always show up every week. Shit. After Ash they are lucky to have 10k fans.

My standard tailgate group of about 10 die hards stayed the entire game. I was surprised the other 15 casual fans in our tailgate actually showed up. Most left shortly after halftime.

My daughter and her friends left the student section in the 3 Q. It was too cold. Sitting in the shade, no sun and the wind hitting them for hours wasn’t enjoyable.

yeah Ash killed the program and its not exactly like they flocked back under Greg. Boring play and lack offense up to this season is likely a main driver along with games blowouts by the time of the 4th. Those 2 losses to Wisconsin/UCLA soured the fanbase and beating Minny wasnt going to get them back and then of course blowing today is a taste people will remember when renewal time comes..are season tix worth it. 3 games a year sometimes is better than going through the motion of 7 with 2-3 creampuffs on the schedule

We have more parking close to the stadium than most B1G schools. Hell, Illinois fans were commenting on that to me today at our tailgate.
We have the best parking situation in the country, bar none. Many in our fanbase are simply ignorant to the parking situations in other places. Michigan and Florida fans pay $20K for Scarlet Lot Parking. We pay $2K + the cost of the parking pass.

well 6-4 is the best season in a decade on the cusp of going 7-4 but people leaving in droves in the 3rd. If people are expecting 9-1 that is NEVER GOING TO HAPPEN...and quite frankly it only happened ONE TIME with Greg

That’s why they are call casual or fair weather fans. If it was 70 and sunny there would have been more fans and they would have stayed the entire game.

WTF with welcome to the jungle on 3rd down?

Fire PJ already. He is a dickhead with no feel for the flow of the game or crowd.
That twerp is keeping fans from attending games…the ear deafening noise throughout the game is out of control. Not enjoyable for many .

Penn State, Syracuse, Maryland, Boston College, Virginia Tech, California, USC, Miami, are other programs that come to mind too. We are spoiled with the parking we do have.

well all except Maryland who has other advantages and Cuse/BC who no one cares about have history.

but again I think RU fans thrive off of the tailgating more than the game and thats what matters most. Maybe it shouldnt

there are some things RU does right but others not so much...dont worry the blue lot is gone soon

i believe the second floor ramp only was cut out because of cost and also the location of the Hale center...that being said why arent all the auxillary fenced gates open to leave that were open to enter? ... i get wanting to control flow, but it makes no sense, if there was an emergency they would be open so just have them open..they need to make it easier for fans...

I agree that leaving the stadium since the boardwalk seems to be more difficult, as the lane for the auxilary bus has narrowed the path in the boardwalk, and also with Rodkin you have more cars in that location.

Is it me or do others feel we are over policed at the stadium and would be better served with people assisting to move traffic or putting that $$ to capital improvements to improve safety (ie lighting, wider walkways)

I mean I do not know what the people of NJ and the Rutgers community wants. I get that Illinois is not a sexy name and a late season game vs a mediocre Michigan or USC would bring in 50K today. Overall attendance was okay..maybe approaching 40K-423Ktops, hard to tell... I sort of expected that. However my ire is what happened as the game wore on. Students showed up in huge numbers which is impressive but they started to filter out in the 3rd and inexplicably in a close game in the 4th, I would say we lost about 75% of the student sections. Not much better elsewhere. I think maybe 20-25K left in the stadium in such a dramatic down to the wire game. How is that possible? Look I get it was cold and windy but this was far from any of the coldest games..highs still were in the upper 40s yet peeps clueless dressed like it was comfortable fall day. Or maybe they just loved to get trashed and drink cold drinks all day and bombed which is definitely noticable. I get leaving early down 35-0, actually ahead...its a what the **** moment.

Just a shame to see tons of empties late in the game and lack of crowd noise on the previous Illinois drive where they took the lead. I think the constant use of the scoreboard music has neutered the ability of building any crowd noise. Great early in the game, not so much later.

Or is the reality we have a hardcore base of 20-25k and that is basically it. I tend think this is where I land. Not enough people care about RU football. We will always have this hardcore diehard base but beyond that, we will get a shit ton of fans for early season night games with big atmospheres but the following takes a hit game after game. I get the team went through a funk but my issue is if you are there already wouldnt you be interested in the outcome. Its apparent the students could care less about wins or losses besides that hardcore group you saw.

Its tough to grow a program when you simply lack the hardcore fanbase numbers the rest of the conference has. RU has been in the Big 10 a decade, mostly losing season but its apparent people may only care if the team is going 10-2 which seems very unrealistic so here we are. Getting 40-42K a game but yet half of them leaving before the game is over whether the team is losing or winning
Totally agree here; was at the game and we could not understand why a large swath of fans where leaving? I mean WTF? It’s embarrassing really.

have you seen how many police they have outside the rac now plus the metal gates which shut you off when you leave and try to go to the apc...i get it we all want security but its like quadruple over past years

I can't argue anything you said. Reading the sentiment of Section 119, people were leaving early because they "had enough". Battered by the wind, watching us spin our wheels on several key drives, then Illinois gets huge chunks to score repeatedly, battered by the scoreboard noise, 4 hour game that killed any flow...people are just getting tired of Rutgers Football. Yes it was close in score, and there was exciting moments, but our games just feel like a nightmare trip to the MVC office followed by a root canal.
Spot on! The ridiculous piped in music and”make some noise” crap wears on people. Maybe it F’up Schiano’s thought process also. People had enough and leave.

Agree. The people leaving were ridiculous. And the sun came out on our side of the stadium later in the game so can’t blame the cold. Not enough people care unless we are a 1 or 2 loss team. Simple as that

I think some people were not prepared for the wind/cold and got more and more uncomfortable as the game went on... but I think the game was also just too long for casual fans to just sit in wind and listen to nonsense from the loudspeakers.

As a total aside - wtf was with the Wicked trailer? They made Illinois the main character, and RU the side character.... in a story where the two of them start as rivals but end up as friends?

I’m happy. Very disappointed by the outcome. But 10 years ago when we were the laughing stock of college football, we would have been thrilled to be in games like this. I’m soaking it in. Despite the loss, the game had me interested the whole way threw. I wasn’t out mowing my yard mid way threw the 2nd quarter like i was with Ash and Flood. Sure I’d like the win. But it didn’t happen. We didn’t deserve the win against Washington but we aren’t giving that back. We are a 6-5 team. I’m happy. Let’s get to 7-5 and go to Phoenix!!!

I watched the first half of today's game on Peacock. Due to child obligations that make me a chauffeur on many Saturdays, I listened to the second half on WFAN.

Some time after 4pm, I am still listening to the game. On Illinois final drive, the horn was used every single play. Just maddening to hear. When I got home, I watched the final drive on Peacock replay to see the plays I listened to on WFAN. We all know what happened on the field. Yet, the horn was atrocious. Why the athletic department cannot stop this is worrisome - it costs nothing and would delight the fanbase. A simple fix is outside of the athletic department's capabilities.

Duration was 4 hours, 10 minutes. Should not take that long to play a 60 minute game. Before the game, I watched on Peacock Ireland play Fiji in rugby, an 80 minute game made up of 2 40-minute halves. Lots of injuries in rugby, just like football. The game took 2 hours, half of what the Rutgers game lasted.

I no longer bring my family to Rutgers games, with the exception of basketball at Madison Square Garden. They can't stand it. Went to an Islanders hockey game tonight. Much better experience. Done in 2.5 hours. Minimal lines. Horn only used for goals.

Agreed.. how many people in the stands are there because of a few maniac fanatics in their family? There's only so much they will take. Watching on TV having taken teh lead with just over a minute left we estimated only a 50-50 shot of winning. I hate this phrase but sometimes it is appropriate.. it is what it is.

I just think RU is a tailgating experience school and not an in game experience school
90% of the time, I'm in the stadium when the team runs out onto the field. But no question the tailgating is an extremely important aspect of it for me. Someday, I'll decide the 2 hour round trip to Jersey Mike's arena isn't worth it anymore. But because of the tailgating, I'll have football tickets as long as I'm physically able.

Respectfully disagree. The game was awesome. The ending sucked. The Ash years were the games you questioned why did I pay to be here.

100% agree with the OP. I’m glad I wasn’t the only one who notice all the people leaving early. Good amount of people in my section left after we went up 9 with all of the 4th Q left to play. I think the weather did play a big part of it. The windchill made it feel like in the 30s. If you didn’t have a hat or gloves, it was uncomfortable.

For the students. Kudos for showing up in numbers. I just don’t think a lot of them are football fans. They are there because it’s an event. The weather probably impacted them as well.

Btw, I got in line in the East gate at 11:42 and had my ticket scanned by 11:48. The line moved quickly.

It was cold in the club seats too- wind was whipping. With multiple layers, a wool hat and hoodie up, it was cold. Heaters were not working. Yeah, cry me a river. We stayed until the missed FG, and left thinking Rutgers won the game, only to learn while going down the ramps that Greg call the TO and the TD happened. Was puzzled listening to the radio broadcast, thinking it was a fake FG.

Greg's record against B1G opponents at SHI may have something to do with attendance.
2021 -- 0-4, losing 52-13, 31-13, 52-3, 40-16
2022--1-4, losing 27-10, 14-13, 52-17, 55-10
2023-- 2-2, losing 35-16, 42-24
2024--2-3, losing 42-7, 35-32, 38-31

Overall, 5-13 at home over 4 seasons, never a winning record against B1G opponents. 2020 season excluded because stadium was empty.
