GAME 14 INDIANA: Disappointment

Sitting someone for defensive mistakes only makes sense if at least one of the following is true:
(1) there is someone better to play
(2) the player is not making the proper effort

If Ace is trying his best and is the best available player then there is no reason to sit him no matter how many mistakes he makes.
both i think are the case

and he is only here for a year, there just isnt the accounability and yes no one else on the bench and there just is no time for any significant change

Ace played good 1 on 1 defense on mbako many possessions tonight. Had about 4 blocks. He was tired and was lazy on some close outs but he was actually trying to do too much on help defense. That was his problem defensively.. almost 40 minutes and feeling like you have to do it all would leave many gassed. You guys are something else lol

So many possessions he had no clue where his man was. He was ball watching on almost every possession. All the progress i thought he was making on D went out the door.

He needs to be programmed to take defensive more serious and be aware at all times where his man is. Yes he falls for every pumpfake and gets beat off the dribble too many times, but it is the lack of awareness off the ball that is most damaging.

Needs to play 30 minutes and be accountable on defense. It will go a long way for the team if Pike makes Ace play defense and sits him to stay fresh and sits him for making the same mistakes Derkack and Hayes make

From the minute I knew this was the roster they were going with I knew we would have to wait for ace and Dylan to figure out how to win with this team. Hopefully it's not too late when they start clicking...But do you guys remember every portal target discussed on this board going other places? This is what you get when you strike out on literally all your portal targets. You're only making it hard on yourself going into a game like today without Dylan Harper and being angry and disappointed that they lost. Really? Lol what did you expect? Could have been Rudy Tomjonovic coaching this team, they wouldn't have won tonight.

He was trying to defend the whole Indiana roster, I guess he feels comfortable roaming like that in the zone. But I agree needs to be more disciplined if they are to play zone. Also needs to dial back the aggression going after shots. But to question his effort seems like a malicious comment because of your vendetta against one and done. Before you wanted others to play over ace because of his offense now you want others to play over him because of his defense. 🤔 I'd like to know who you think would be a better option? Lol

to me this season is down to a couple of hail marys...tonight was an opportunity of some miracle that without Dylan the team could rally together and show some toughness and some unlikely player steps up and they sneak out a win vs a a mediocre Indiana. Well we didnt see that even with Ace going for 89 and Indiana playing just okay at best ball. No hail mary tonight, will we get one vs ucla

Even if Dylan played this would be at best one of those games going right down to the wire as usual.

I have tremendous respect and appreciation for the job Pikiell has done as the coach here, but I think it’s bad as a fanbase to resign ourselves to him being here even for the next couple years. It sucks, and I hate it, but the paradigm of college basketball has completely shifted toward the transfer portal, and Pikiell has brought in one effective transfer since the sit out rule was abolished.

By all accounts, Harper and Bailey were made available to us with one time payments. The rest of the roster was constructed with, ostensibly, our annual NIL budget, and while revenue sharing will help it’ll help everyone else too. Pikiell has proven absolutely nothing in this era of basketball.
He brought in two impact portal players, Yeboah Spencer. But you are right, it’s still not good enough

It is what it is. What can you do? Hopefully they improve..

I think he got a talk about not fouling. There were many times he could have tried to make a defensive play and he stepped aside. He was mostly engaged on D I thought, but wasn't taking chances.

Hoping grant
Oh ok, so grant is the better defensive option and pj hayes was the better offensive option. Only thing is that ace started the game and went to the bench with a nice lead. That lead was gone before he could get back in and hayes 0fer tonight. I like Hayes though, tough shooting stretch for him, think he's better with Dylan AND Ace on the floor though. Not sure about him without them.

Pike has never played that much zone ever.
Which is his fault to an extent !! He shouldn’t have stayed in zone consecutively so long. He should have changed defenses the minute they hit a 3 against the zone. He stayed and Goode hit his second and Galloway hit one to let them maintain their 10 point lead. Pike has to coach better with this crew , that is difficult because of the shitshow the supporting cast has shown but great coaching is trying to do everything to help your team and confusing the other team with a change up in defense like a 1/3/1 half court trap was worth the try.

Ace taking those FTs was a joke. Hayes was in the game
Both Pj and Somerville were in the game and much better foul shooters. Thought that error by Pike when the score was 58-52 when ACE missed the 2 was really really bad by Pike. Not even sure what he based it on since the data points to PJ or Somerville and Somerville was already perfect from the line.

Also could have gotten Hayes some confidence to find his stroke

Sommerville is officially our best foul shooter at 82% (32-39). Hayes has a higher percentage, but he’s only 6-7.

I guess it's over for many. No need for long posts with simplistic analysis and regurgitating the results. Good night Gracie.

Just all terrible mismanagement by coaches all around. Player subs, personnel choices, defensive adjustments, lack of fundamentals, lack of an offensive identity outside of ISO street ball.
Pike is lucky to have Ave and Harp to bail him out on offense but they can’t help him in every facet of the game.
All these warts we are seeing have been consistent throughout Pikes years here. The difference in years past is that we had much better defensive teams that masked all the other problems but they still existed. This year they are more glaring as we are putting up a ton of points thanks to our NBA stars—-just overshadowed by all the other flaws.

For me it raises the whole accountability issue. For all the talk on this board it’s all speculation that players aren’t held accountable. Except this was a red flag for me. Pike did not do what was best for the team at that moment. Lathan should have been shooting.

This season could turn out to be a disaster of epic proportions. Imagine having 2 of the top 3 NBA draft picks and not even making the conference tournament, let alone the NCAA tourney. Who would want to come here with Pike as the coach knowing you have no chance of making the tourney? Time to face the facts that we are not a basketball school, start pouring that money into lax or baseball or track

Of course it will. If you were ever expecting this team to improve to the point where it was anything but BAD without Harper you were deluding yourself.

Look, all signs point to this being a mediocre team that isn’t making the tournament *even with* Harper playing like one of the best players in the country.

If there is a path to making the tourney, it involves Ace quickly realizing some of his potential, joining Dylan as an elite player, and forming a two headed monster that carries the rest of this ragtag bunch of misfits on its back.

From that standpoint what we saw tonight is probably a positive overall… Bailey was amazing. But there is no amount of Bailey that can carry an entire team in the Big Ten.

Stop looking for some giant leap forward from the others. Davis is improving. Sommerville is improving. Hayes and Martini will not always brick all of their open threes. But these will be small improvements, not giant leaps forward.

There is one narrow path to salvation, and it involves Bailey coming into his own along with Harper. This game was lost the minute Harper decided he couldn’t play.
The game I saw could have been won by the team on the floor last night. Missed foul shots and brain farts were not baked in. Martini added nothing and replacing him with anyone might have impeoved us too.

Sure. Fred Hill's teams did not go 0-18 in the conference.
