Carino Sounds the Alarm

He makes a lot of good points! Ha.

Look on the bright side, maybe if this issue is out there front and center we can prevent it from happening again.

People keep telling me I'm too harsh on Carino and his SHU bias and slanted articles.

RU has a revenue generation product and it's the football program.....while Schiano 20 years ago, required these things, to mention that suddenly budgets would be cut at the expense of everything for football is absurd.

Carino on the other hand, has his alma mater, with a Head Coach currently suspended for recruiting tampering regarding former Cuse and current Seton Hall player Taurean Thompson....Thompson, who was recruited by Seton Hall out of HS, lost this recruiting battle to Cuse.

The kid apparently didn't like Cuse (no harm there), except Seton Hall and Willard and Shaheen Holloway, apparently convinced the kid to enroll in classes at Seton Hall while Thompson never returned anyone's calls and messages from Cuse all of the summer of before he transferred....or never told Cuse he was transferring.

Seton Hall suddenly with it's pants down, self reports this nonsense, instead of just telling the player to tell Cuse he was transferring.....Willard suspended 2 games.....Thompson, who by all accounts is going to play this year (one would think), did NOT play 1 minute the other night vs Wagner....maybe he didn't play because the NCAA is probably looking into all the crying and whining that Boeheim has allegations on Seton Hall and Thompson.....

Maybe instead of trying yet again to claim he is being objective in regards to RU, he should actually investigate what happens next with ranked Seton Hall.....is Thompson suspended.....is that why he didn't play, even when walk ons played Tuesday night....?? Will games have to be vacated where Thompson plays this year, if the crazy NCAA, finds more things wrong with what happened with Thompson....??

The nonsense about RU with a full share of revenue coming down the road from the B1G is based on football and basketball content and revenue from TV....and unfortunately, the football program needs major attention right now, so everything (like revenue for tickets and donations), gets resolved as quickly as possible....so the other programs that rely on this revenue, all "eat".

There's at last check for RU, a quality staff, quality assistants, new practice facility, new locker rooms and improvements not just for hoops specifically, but every other program is benefitting from this. To comment and have OnTheBanks, be somehow naive enough to follow this narrative is insanity (nothing against Dave White, who I happen to really like and has top notch content)......but this was a fumble or botched handoff on the eve of what is likely, the one season many fans are looking forward to....Does anyone feel this article, makes sense, given the timing of it....?? It seems like it "could happen", like maybe I "could" win the lottery tonight.....

I keep hearing that SHU is the "premier program in the region or state".....well, go investigate what's going on at SHU, Kevin Willard, Thompson.....tell us all what's going on, or are we casually ignoring a story, staring everyone in the face???

Let's not create stories that literally don't exist, while ignoring "actual news", that's right under our collective noses......

But, remember, I am the bad guy, because I choose to defend RU and happen to have a level or "lack of trust", in what people keep telling me is a top notch reporter who is somehow "neutral".....

Don't tell me your neutral.....show it with your actions.....the headline should be "where's Taurean Thompson, why didn't he play at all.....?? Rest assured if that happened at RU, we would see headlines of "shut the program down, RU drops the ball again"......or maybe it's just me.....

Jerry’s bias is not blindly supporting Seton Hall over Rutgers it’s his blind love of basketball and complete disdain for college football. Jerry should’ve counted to 10 before submitting that article with all of the inflammatory language. Schiano “elbowed basketball into a ditch”? Jesus Christ. I’m a basketball fan first and foremost but get a grip, Jerry.

Does the Practice facility get built if we we're still in the AAC? Even if the RAC sold out every night and we were the top of that league in hoops? Don't know, but probably doubtful.

The money and long term stability is with the Big Ten and that required a football team that could pass the laugh test when the call came. Schiano and Mulcahy made that happen. Hoops wasn't gonna get us there.

Whatever the short term set backs for Basketball in the long run being in the B1G is better for everybody.

Also, since Jerry isn’t an alum or a fan, he does not have to endure the embarrassment of being associated with Rutgers the way we do when the football program is a disaster.

When the BIG invited RU, the football program appeared to be in good shape.
The collapse didn't seem likely even with the obvious upgrade in league difficulty.
SHU is where they are because they are one dimensional and even great seasons won't change things. They are never going to be any more relevant than they are.

Seton Hall and similar universities should thank the NCAA for allowing them to reach the pinnacle of college basketball without investing barely anything in college football. I looked on their website and did not see football. Do they have a football program?? If so, what division.

I brought this up in the Carino podcast thread, where he previewed our basketball season. I thought it was odd that he raised the issue at all.

So much has changed since Greg was here the first time, much of it for the better, and much of it due to Greg’s efforts, like getting invited to join the B1G and eventually reaping our full share of B1G money.

The days of “funneling money away from hoops” and into football are not only gone, but are no longer necessary, imo.

Just means alums need to give more.

I can’t imagine a new president will change the tune of reducing the athletic subsidy so it just means the BIG $ will offset those funds...

If basketball wants they are going to need to have people step up to get shiny new toys.

When the major football powers pull out of the NCAA umbrella (Debatable but more likely than not) they are going to takes the hoops tournament with them. Why share all that revenue with these small fry.

Sure, some will bemoan the loss of "Cinderella" but the eyeballs and money will follow the big boys.

Things can change. NIT used to be the much bigger deal. That can flip again.

We've said it before: Seton Hall absent RU passing on the initial Big East invite is St. Peters with a law school.

Yeah, Jerry we all know it is impossible to have good programs for both sports. Just don’t tell that most years to the following—Michigan State, Michigan, Iowa, Wisconsin, and Ohio State.

Jerry, how about an article on Seton Halls on the conference games they will play on campus this year? I realize their campus is the size of a postage stamp, but they have been in the Big East for about 40 years and still don’t have their own arena. I think Georgetown is the only other old time Big East school that still doesn’t play any conference games in their own building. Even powerhouse multi national Champions Villanova play some conference games in their own place. If any of you have ever been to Villanova Pavillion, it doesn’t take up much space at all. What has Seton Hall been doing with the money all these years if they haven’t built their own arena?

Just an opinion from afar. Hobbs AD back round is at a school where basketball was king. He seems to love the sport. As long as he's still here and has a say I doubt we'd see hoops be shoved to the side of the road.

If the Rutgers football program was so bad that the Big Ten kicked us out, we dropped football, and re-joined the Big East, Jerry would be perfectly happy with that. He doesn't see the bigger picture as Rutgers alums and fans do. I like Jerry's coverage generally but he has a major blind spot when it comes to college football and this article was ridiculously over the top.

I don't think Providence plays conference games on campus.

Yes, I believe they are at the Dunk and until they built this only had a high school quality court to practice on campus. And my understanding was it was not like nice, rich, north jersey catholic HS school court but something the kids at Providence public high would recognize as mediocre.

Is the article inaccurate in terms of Jerry’s recounting of the history? It doesn’t seem so. And he says the point of the article is to warn: “don’t let it happen again”. It seems completely reasonable to me to raise this concern. Money is tight. Although the practice facility has been built, what if assistant salaries or the recruiting budget are cut? To say this could not possibly happen in the time of big deficits is just putting your head in the sand. I, for one, will be paying attention to whether this scenario plays out.

SHU doesn't have the space on campus to build an arena. That's not relevant for this discussion.

It is for a practice facility which I'm sure they're frantically looking to get started since RU has built a top notch facility, the best in the area by a wide margin.

Carino is well off base....by a lot.

The Rock is an awesome arena though. Comfortable seating that can accommodate 16k+, massive state of the art scoreboard, other cutting edge Pro arena bells and whistles.

Obviously it's better to have an on campus arena if possible but The Hall gets great exposure playing at Prudential Center which has easy access via train from most of NJ and Manhattan

Plus it's right off major highways, 78, 280, GSP, NJTP, etc.

In the past, many of their games there are like playing in a library or The RAC during the Eddie Jordan years.

I concur with BillyC80 above who says "The days of “funneling money away from hoops” and into football are not only gone, but are no longer necessary, imo."

Sounds like all these snowflakes are upset that Jerry is speaking some hard truths here. Didn't realize he could trigger you all so hard...

He's right you know. I'm even more certain than right after reading NJ Hawk's drivel. That dude is wrong 90% of the time...

Yes, shame on GS for a litany of bad hires, horrible decision making (i.e. strip FTs, tending bar, Rice’s antics), etc. If only we could have continued to swim in the abyss of Ash top to keep this basketball momentum going. SMH

Obviously, you're clueless as usual. So. Orange has zoning laws (size, height) that restrict the building of an on campus arena. At least you got the size of the campus right.

Whether the story that Schiano took all the money and hurt the way their programs during his first go round is irrelevant. He is not a stupid man. The mbb program will be successful before the football even gets turned around. He will have a huge recruiting tool when he takes a recruit into a game at the RAC with the place rocking and tells a recruit how the football stadium can rock the same way. If mbb can be successful in the BIG so can football. All we need are the players. A good b-ball team helps him now far more than it did when he was first here. Also, the admin sees the result of a good b-ball team as well. Have no fears, Carino is wrong IMO.
