Carino Sounds the Alarm

Carino isn't wrong about what happened the first time Schiano was here to the men's basketball program.

I feel strongly that this is a point worth making, having been around myself the first time.

While it's true lots have changed (names, faces, time and conferences), there's no harm in being a bit leery about what changes might be coming for RU athletics if Schiano is the hire.

Thanks to Jerry Carino for shining a light here!

Sounds like all these snowflakes are upset that Jerry is speaking some hard truths here. Didn't realize he could trigger you all so hard...

He's right you know. I'm even more certain than right after reading NJ Hawk's drivel. That dude is wrong 90% of the time...

I linked 3 items related to SHU that are actual stories...and I'm wrong....LOL

So in your opinion what happens first? Schiano bulldozes the APC or schiano guts the APC and kicks all the teams out and turns it into the football facility? Curious

It was a clown article. We just spent $100+ million on a facility!!!! ONE-HUNDRED-PLUS-MILLION. Now go funnel that

Yep. How about we leverage that and maybe get to .500 before we start heaving stones at Schiano. Just my .02.

SHU gets a fraction of the $ RU will get from the BIG even with their "success"- in the BIG EAST

Did we not just spend $100+ mill on a bball facility or am i mistaken? Is that going away?

It's not about today, it's about the future. No one is arguing football doesn't deserve stuff now. And it got stuff like the outdoor facility and new locker rooms while the APC was being built. But... in the future, this kind of spread out of funding must continue. It can't all go to football.

Jerry is good guy; known him for years. But, this is not the Rutgers of the past. Basketball was ignored and the RAC did disintegrate. The program was horribly run. I don’t blame Schiano for that the first time around and there’s no way we are going back in time in basketball. Not a good article.

But... this is not indicative of Jerry’s coverage of Pikiell and this rebuild. He’s been very positive on the turnaround and he’s very knowledgeable. Cut him some slack.

How big were the checks the big east cut us vs how big are the checks the B1G is cutting us? Youre talking apples and bowling balls here

Football generates revenue for every sports program....so a stronger RU football program helps basketball.

If football continues to flounder, then Carino would be correct because ticket sales, donations and everything else declines. I don't see how basic math suddenly gets lost in the equation.

There is no APC or B1G without football....and while I understand the theory, it holds no path towards happening. The basketball games actually were one of the biggest events in January for football recruits to show fan enthusiasm in the early Schiano era....

We could not even entertain a recruiting weekend around a football game for a couple of hours because things are thinned out and there aren't more than 15K at games. How about having 45K to 47K in a year during a September or October official visit & showing recruiting targets that you will be the man on campus and rocking the RAC in January and February while football does their thing from September to November.

Everything has to compliment each other and small minded or single minded thoughts, get you nowhere fast.

Jerry's a basketball first guy like a lot of postewrs in this MBB board are.
So naturally he's going to be looking at improving Football at a notoriously cheap Rutgers as a threat to basketball funding.

Just the fact that football took funds from RU MBB
Schiano's first go-round is cause for him to sound the alarm bell .
But different time now and different needs than before.
Hobbs isn't going to destroy what's being built now by Pike to give Greg what football needs.

Hobbs has invested too much time and effort to do that and if the rumors are true that the boosters with the deepest pockets are demanding Schiano, expect Hobbs to demand they fund what Greg wants or risk the chance of Schiano not being hired because of the funding designated for other programs will not be moved .
Take it easy, the RU MBB won't come to an end if Schiano becomes RU's FB HC, it won't even be affected .
RU MBB becoming a winner has become a priority under Hobbs and making RU FB a winner won't stop that or hurt MBB funding.

The sky is falling feeling is unnecessary.

I agree with you that Carino has been very fair and positive toward Pike and R Hoops in the last 4 years.

I also think that this particular article smells.

KYK - That’s my phrase...apples and bowling balls. Feel free to use it; it is very effective in making a point.

If the Rutgers football program was so bad that the Big Ten kicked us out, we dropped football, and re-joined the Big East, Jerry would be perfectly happy with that. He doesn't see the bigger picture as Rutgers alums and fans do. I like Jerry's coverage generally but he has a major blind spot when it comes to college football and this article was ridiculously over the top.
I thought it was well written. It is basically a column. The paper probably should have labeled it as such so that readers would know that they're about to read Carino's opinion and not a straight article.

After one game at the RAC and reading about the stupid parking snafus, it reminded me again that it wasn’t really just the money but just the gross incompetence and lack of attention to detail that plagued the basketball program under so many ADs. Everyone talked about how Schiano was a micromanager and that if a blade of grass was out of place, he knew about it and it got taken care of. When Pernetti was AD, I used to complain / whine on these boards about all of the broken light bulbs in the 300 level and student section of the RAC. I’d sit in my seat and look up at that every game and come on here and mention it and see if anything got done. Kinda like a test because to me you shouldn’t have to have a fan tell you those things need to be looked at. Those things had nothing to do with money and everything to do with competence. Hermann was a disaster in every other way but operational things like that got addressed and she had no money to play with. Under Hobbs, small operational type things have slipped again. Was anyone surprised that the scoreboard for the first game didn’t work for most of the first half? Competence. Attention to detail. Those things don’t cost $100,000,000.

We screwed up by all those phone calls. We have had kids leave and they told their friends in season the school they were transferring too. I am not saying what we did was ok. But to act like we are doing g awful, untoward things is abject foolishness. Same with tiny.

We are called the premier college basketball program cause anyone who can see or read knows we are. In nj, there isnt any comp. I would gladly compare us under the covers to any successful program, make that any major program.

If you tell the cop you were only speeding cause every one else is, you are still guilty. I get that.

Uhh it is about today. The basketball facility isn't going to magically disappear in the future. That's not how buildings work.

I guess you forgot about Schiano kicking all of the other teams out of the Hale Center.
Huh? Explain your point. Because again..nothing is going to change with the basketball facility. That's what it is. That's what it will be used as.

Do we have one of those? The search for a football coach was a clown show. You should probably worry a little.

I only worry about things that are in my control. Worrying about a sport is very small in the grand scheme of life.
