Carroo to Miami

Last year's 86th pick overall was David Johnson, RB on the Arizona Cardinals. He signed a 4 yr $2,919,373 contract with $639,373 guaranteed as the signing bonus.

As a Dolphins fan and a Penn State fan this draft couldn't have gone worse for me. I now have to root against Hack and for Carroo. On top of that Nassib goes to the Browns. UGH.

FWIW my ideal landing spot for Hack was Dallas. Solid OL, and with Romo he would have had a couple years to sit and learn. I think LC in Miami will do well. Enough talent on our O that he isn't expected to be a #1 out of the gates.

We've sent several receivers to the NFL in recent years and none of them had hands like Leonte. I can only recall him dropping one catchable pass in three years. If he stays healthy he'll be in the league for a long time.

There's a lot of validity to the reasoning that Hack has been hampered by awful pass protection for the last two years. But he's made a ton of really bad throws too. He's got a lot of work to do to get under center in the NFL.

Miami was 27th in scoring and lose Lamar Miller. Enough talent on O? They need Carroo to start and produce. Which he will if they can keep the QB on his feet for once.

Unlike Kiper and McShay, Mike Mayock is someone I like to listen to whenever he gives his opinions about draft prospects. He usually gets it more right than wrong (He was critical about Maurice Jones-Drew, who is the only player I think Mayock got completely wrong) and clearly you can tell that he actually studies most prospects not just the hot names. He usually compliments their strengths but also mentions things kids need to work on, however he really had nothing negative to say about Carroo and gave him nothing but praise.

man.... I wanted him on the Pats... Rumor has it that Belechick was going to draft him which is why the dolphins traded 3 picks to move up and get Caroo before the pats could...

At receiver we have Jarvis Landry and DeVante Parker. Not sure what the new staff's offense will look like but they are a pretty solid 1 & 2 WR. Parker is still a little bit of an unknown as the early part of his season was hampered by injury but he came on pretty strong at the end of the year. I think our OL will be much better this year (healthy Pouncey, Albert and adding Tunsil) and RT17 is serviceable. The big unknown/weakness is running back. So I guess a more accurate statement would have been that our passing O has enough talent...

The things Hack struggled with as a freshman, accuracy, touch, and footwork, didn't seem to improve much at his time at PSU. Whether that was coaching, a porous OL, a bad fit for the O we were trying to run, or a deficiency with Hack's game was hard to tell. Hence my reasoning behind Dallas being a good landing spot. Dallas OL might be the best in the NFL, zeke, and being able to sit 2ish years would have allowed him to reboot his game and put him in the best position to succeed. I fear the J-E-T-S will need him sooner than later and likely before he's ready.

23. Miami Dolphins: WR Leonte Carroo The competitive, productive Carroo is attractive, but how fast will he get on the field on offense? Maybe the Kenny Stills experiment won’t work out, but DeVante Parker figures to get more run and Jarvis Landry dominates the slot, which is where some figured Carroo might be best. One way he can contribute immediately: on special teams, where he’s blocked punts. But his character risks are worrisome, especially after the Laremy Tunsil pick. Grade: C

Carroo was predicted 4th-5th round. And by his NFL scout grade, he seems to have leaped over these 3 guys to go as 9th WR.. ACC and SEC.

Peake, Charone WR 6'2" 209 Clemson 5.8
Cooper, Pharoh WR 5'11" 203 South Carolina 5.6
Mitchell, Malcolm WR 6'0" 198 Georgia 5.5

Carroo was one of 12 guys all rated 5.4.. so he leaped over those other 11 as well.

Great job Leonte. Everything you did after getting graded out helped you earn more $$$. Enjoy Miami.. but not too much.

The IRS takes 40 percent of that bonus. Still a nice chunk, nevertheless, but not as nice as people think.

The Goverment taxes money you make? Who knew. Even people who make a lot of money? Thanks for clearing that up Al. No one would have ever thought that.

Florida has no state income tax, so he gets to keep more of his salary. ESPN had a good discussion no why the Giants had to bid more for Oliver with taxes included.

No they don't.

Hyperbole and math are not compatible concepts.

Al said the IRS takes 40% for the sake of simplicity, but his bonus tax rate would be at least 41.95% (total, not marginal). And that's assuming he moves immediately to FL, so his salary isn't taxed here.

Knight Shift, I'm including an additional $20.6k and $42.2k in payroll and state taxes, respectively.

32.3% with no deductions.

it might be that at tax time, when filing, but my employer definitely withheld close to 40 percent. i just double checked. point is, a 693,000 signing bonus, isn't a 693,000 signing bonus, after the IRS is paid.

I'm pretty sure everyone understands this.

I'm also pretty sure that everyone understands that proper tax planning gets that number back a lot closer to $693k than "40 % off".

And for the record, if you employer withheld 40% of your bonus, that's on you. Companies will withhold whatever you tell them to withhold.

Exactly right. Regardless, what 22 year old would not be happy walking home with $470,000 after taxes as a signing bonus?

No, but whatever it is, if he uses Al's accountant, his take home pay will be minimum wage. :flush:

I'm just trying to figure out what his car threshold is. It sounds to me like he's not quite into Lambo money just yet. Maybe a nice 911.

I'm still trying to figure out why the Bengals took Tyler Boyd ahead of Leonte.
I mean....Boyd is a nice receiver.... but would you have traded Carroo for him ?

Maybe a nice safe Porsche SUV. He can get a nice Cayenne Turbo S for only $160,000.
