Yes, but if ratings remain poor on NYE, the powers that be may look to change that.
It will be an issue because most people will be at parties not at home.
It is great for kids. They get to actually watch a meaningful game.
Unlike MLB where kids can't even watch a regular season game. Did you guys notice the Yanks are playing at 7pm the entire year? I've got one or two weekend games in the afternoon to get my kid to.
Forget about a kid ever seeing a playoff or world series, hockey playoff, NBA playoff game.
Why do I care you ask? If not seeing some amazing championship games as a kid, you won't care as an adult. I haven't seen a playoff baseball game in close to two decades (I go to bed). I rarely watch a regular season game now. They lost a paying fan.

Not true . The tournament is more popular in the first four days than at any other time in the tournament . By your logic the regional weekend would be most popular because almost everyone is still alive in the office pool .
I don't know if it's a day thing or whatever, but skipping out of work on a weekday afternoon with coworkers or friends to watch the games certainly helps its popularity . It makes the tournament what it is .

Its popular because guys like me, who don't watch 1 second of basketball (pro or college) during the season, watch the day games during MM like my life depends on it. Again, I go to bed at 9pm no matter what.
100% true. You have 100 times the normal people watching basketball, who never watch it, glued to the TV because they picked a team. The office pools get everyone involved and most are not fans of the game and could care less who wins the whole thing but they wont miss watching two teams they never heard of because they have one of the in their pool. That's why people are leaving work to watch. They have a vested interest in every game on that first two days of the tournament. It's to watch a team they never heard of try to win because they have them going another round.

Actually the fail is on you as your preference doesn;t explain the millions of people who don't watch the game at all in the regular season suddenly are leaving work because of a 5 dollar office pool.

Because regular season basketball is WORTHLESS.
The Power 5 get 8 to 10 teams in each year. The little conferences have to win their conference tournament to get in. Why do the littler conferences bother playing in the regular season (sarcasm)????????????

Actually you and I are the same. I don't watch the regular season at all as it meaningless. But the first 4 days and nights are immensely popular because it reaches beyond the sports fan. Not because they want to watch who might win it all but because they have a vested interest in the game. All morning new shows, the President, every office in the country talks about the office pool. It get millions of people watching something they know very little about and have them watching it with a passion. As soon as they are eliminated from the pool they are back to watching Dancing with the Stars.

How do you explain a sport having a tremendous increase in popularity in such a short time? No one watches the Finals like they do the early games as they are no longer in it.
NYE is a bad day for this. On years when it is a weekday some people will be at work for part of the day and not able to watch. Those going to parties will be subject to what the general consensus is which is likely Ryan Seacrest or some other show.

And where am I stirring the pot. I made a simple, factual statement that March Madness popularity is based on the ever increasing participation of the office pool. Not because a portion of the games are played in the daytime.
Ok fine, agree to disagree . As for the football semifinals I like it on New Year's Eve . I think it's an overrated holiday to begin with and now gives me something to watch from 3 pm on . I learned early in life I can get drunk any night of the year , and it doesn't have to be New Year's Eve . But it can be !
We agree on NYE. An awful day for the amateurs. I don't understand why people are compelled to drink more than they do on any other day of the year and stay up hours later than they usually do. Its a bad mix.
