Big Ten Bowl Overview
• 2023 is the fourth year of the Big Ten’s current six-year non-CFP bowl cycle.
All non-CFP bowl invitations are subject to Big Ten Conference approval based on SELECTION PARAMETERS.
The Rose Bowl Game (CFP Semifinal; Pasadena, CA)
When not hosting a Semifinal, the Orange Bowl will select the highest-ranked team from the Big Ten / SEC / Notre Dame to play the ACC champion
When the Big Ten plays in the Orange Bowl, the Big Ten vacates its spot in the ReliaQuest Bowl (Tampa, FL)
Cheez-It Citrus Bowl (vs. SEC; Orlando, FL)
Will feature at least five different Big Ten teams over six-year agreement 2023: No Purdue ReliaQuest Bowl (vs. SEC; Tampa, FL)
Will feature at least five different Big Ten teams over six-year agreement 2023: No Illinois o Note: The ACC replaces the Big Ten in the ReliaQuest Bowl when the Big Ten is selected to play in a non-Semifinal Orange Bowl
Music City Bowl (vs. SEC; Nashville, TN)
Will feature at least five different Big Ten teams over six-year agreement 2023: No Iowa
Las Vegas Bowl (vs. Pac-12; Las Vegas, NV)
Will feature at least two different Big Ten teams in three games 2023: No Wisconsin
Bad Boy Mowers Pinstripe Bowl (vs. ACC; New York, NY)
Will feature at least three different Big Ten teams from 2022-25, and endeavor to have four different teams. 2023: No Minnesota
Guaranteed Rate Bowl (vs. Big 12; Phoenix, AZ)
Will feature at least five different Big Ten teams over six-year agreement 2023: No Wisconsin
Quick Lane Bowl (vs. MAC; Detroit, MI)
Goal is to avoid repeat Big Ten team appearances in consecutive seasons. 2023: No Restrictions

• 2023 is the fourth year of the Big Ten’s current six-year non-CFP bowl cycle.
• SELECTION PARAMETERS
- “Variety Clauses” ensure fresh experiences and bowl destinations for students and fans, and specify the following:
- Five different teams must appear in six games in the Citrus, ReliaQuest, Music City, and Guaranteed Rate Bowls
- Two different teams must appear in three games in the Las Vegas Bowl
- At least three different teams in four years from 2022 – 2025 in the Pinstripe Bowl, with the goal of four different teams
- “No Repeat” clauses for Big Ten non-CFP bowl games prohibit consecutive appearances in the same non-CFP bowl game in consecutive seasons
- Big Ten Conference Handbook (Contract Bowls). 18.7.B.2.: Conference teams invited to participate in a contract bowl are obligated to accept such invitation.
College Football Playoff (CFP) Overview (for more information on CFP selection process, visit CFP Website)
- The CFP is comprised of the Rose, Orange, Sugar, Fiesta, Peach, and Cotton Bowls (New Year’s Six bowl games)
- The Rose Bowl and Sugar Bowl are CFP Semifinal hosts in 2023-24
- Houston, TX will host the 2024 CFP National Championship Game at NRG Stadium on January 8, 2024
- The champion from each contract conference (i.e., Power Five) is currently guaranteed a berth into the CFP / NY6
- The highest-ranked non-contract conference champion (i.e., Group of Five) is currently guaranteed a berth into the CFP / NY6
- There is no limit on the number of teams from a conference that can participate in CFP / NY6 bowls

- The Big Ten champion has an opportunity to play in the Rose Bowl Game if the champion finishes in the top four of the final CFP poll and is elevated into the Playoffs
