OT: NCAA College Football Games Thread (Championship Weekend) 12/6-12/7 Fri-Sat

Suggestion for moving forward? Stop forcing bad teams (relatively) into higher seeds.

The seeding function is beyond awful.
You'll always end up with the 5/6 seeds getting a better draw.
Yea that’s a function of realignment. If the PAC and B12 existed as they were it would be Oregon, UGA, PSU and Texas as the top 4 seeds. Don’t think there would be as big an issue if that was the case.

Making the 2nd round also a home game too would be helpful but I don’t see that happening. Going to Boise or ASU or wherever might not be such a walkover.

Oregon escaped at home against Boise by 3. If a team has to go on the road to a Boise or any “lesser” team they might not get out with the W.

the lesson learned today is make those OOC games as easy as possible
Is it though?

Alabama lost three conference games.
South Carolina lost three conference games.

Sounds to me that the lesson that should be learned is: don't lose in-conference to 6-6 teams, and get gud.

Think they could’ve survive me one of them just lot two of them. Vandy was a big underdog and OU a double digit underdog that had no offense or qb and won by 3 TDs .

The real lesson is win a 2nd tier conference and jump over all of them.

Rutgers to the AAC!!!
Well that’s what I’ve been saying every time people make fun of the ACC or B12 etc…I always say yea money is better but money is just a means to an end not the end itself. There will be great opportunities and chances for accomplishments these schools have never achieved before.

Opening up playoff access to the "lesser conferences" has been an objective for this playoff iteration. Welcome to 2024. It's almost 2025 but glad you're here.

Not the reason. Overall it’s a function of the rule that the top 4 highest ranked conference champions get a bye. Realignment has nothing to do with it.

Yea and that would have been perfectly fine if the strong teams were spread around more conferences as opposed to concentrated in 2.

Killing off the PAC and weakening the B12 affects the strength of those top 4 seeds.

No one would say easier path for a 5 seed if the top 4 were Oregon, UGA, Texas, PSU.

Expansion to 14 is in the contract if they want it and if only the top 2 get byes (more times than not SEC and B10) that might help some of these easier path issues.

correct, 1 not 2

need to make OOC simple, easy, and no brainier wins as the odds of at least one conference, maybe even 2 happens but that OOC can't be a factor

they do, Boise played a HS varsity level schedule and nothing akin to what even RU faced. I think Boise was in the 80s for SOS. PSU is going to bitch slap them
That's the expectation but that's why they play the games. Boise lost to Oregon at Oregon early in the season by just a last second FG iirc. PSU looked good against Oregon but can't say they've looked that good in every game. On any given day, who knows. They have to beat SMU too but that'll in the cold weather and at home so you think they should.

If they can't get to the semis with SMU and Boise in their way it will be a big let down for them lol.

Funny point made by Wetzel in the CFE pod if you were an Alabama fan watching the Clemson/SMU game. You start the night out rooting for SMU to keep Clemson out and from being a bid thief. Then Clemson looks like they might blow out SMU so then you start rooting for Clemson to really blowout SMU to knock them out. Then SMU mounts a comeback and you’re back to rooting for SMU to win to keep Clemson out.

I love that fire. Schiano would be singing the exact same song if that was us and people were saying our opponents had an easy draw facing us. Pike had the same mantra a few seasons back "we were picked 12th". Bulletin board material from now until that kickoff. "They're saying PSU/SMU has it easy getting to play us." Prior to Saturday night, what has Penn State done this season that should strike fear in the hearts of Boise State, or SMU?

The 12 team playoff is so much better than the four team or the BCS system.

Playoff is fairly wide open. I couldn’t tell you with any certainty who will win. Lot of teams are flawed and there aren’t any super teams like before and in the future it will be harder to create them too.

I’d say maybe 7-8 teams this year have a legitimate chance to win it. The other 4-5 have a chance to maybe not win but definitely burst someone’s bubble.

I've been saying that from Day 1. From a financial standpoint nobody wants to get the bye.
From a competition standpoint realignment messed up the format by concentrating strong teams in 2 conferences instead of them being spread over a bunch. If Oregon, UGA, Texas and PSU were the top 4 seeds no one would say easy path for the 5 seed.

From a financial standpoint I don’t know the specifics or details but someone here said the hosting schools don’t actually get to keep too much of the revenue generated from these playoff games. I think he said it goes to the CFP or something. I don’t know if that’s true or not.

Use the same system they have now for the first round. Then for the 2nd round, the #1 seed gets to name their opponent of any of the four round one winners. Call that out on LIVE TV, held on the Sunday after the 1st round ends.

Oregon AD - who will you be playing in round 2? "We'll be facing Clemson."

Georgia AD - we will take Penn State.

Boise State AD - We challenge Notre Dame.

Arizona State, you get the last team - Ohio State.

The first four CFP seeds will net $8 million for their leagues by virtue of the first-round bye — $4 million for making the field and another $4 million for (automatically) advancing to the quarterfinals.

How much does a team get for making the College Football Playoff in 2024-2025?

With the new 12-team playoff comes a new revenue distribution model. For 2024-2025, here’s how much each team will make in the College Football Playoff:

  • $4 million for each of the 12 teams that makes the College Football Playoff
  • $4 million for each of the 8 teams that makes the College Football Playoff Quarterfinals
  • $6 million for each of the 4 teams that makes the College Football Playoff Semifinals
  • $6 million for each of the 2 teams that makes the College Football Playoff National Championship Game
Additionally, each team who participates in the College Football Playoff receives $3 million to cover expenses for each round.

Additionally, each conference receives $300,000 for each of its schools whose football team meets the NCAA’s APR for participation in a postseason football game. Each independent institution also receives $300,000 if its football team meets the same standard.
