OT: College Football Playoffs Semifinal Games 1/9-1/10 Thurs-Fri

Forgot about that whole brush up with Holtz lol.

I think Day’s obsession with trying to prove toughness and be Michigan is what derailed them from achieving big goals. Just be who your are and do what you’re best at, that’s what’s got them performing well in these playoffs.

Bucks putting up a fight, even though it feels like it’s UT in control.
Ohio State was in control pretty much the whole game only reason it was close was Ohio State penalties killing all their drives in the first half. Could have been ~28-7 at half. Texas also had almost everything go their way (luck) until the strip sack TD.

Agree. It seemed like OSU was trying to give the game away at times and still won by 14. That is a loaded football team and they should win it dispite Ryan day

I thought OSU came out dominant and in control but after that I think it was even. The stats are pretty much even too.

I agree with this article. 3 crucial plays. The Henderson screen, the stuff on the toss and the fumble return.

I tend to think ND will try to do similar against Smith and to a lesser degree the other WRs. I thought OSU should’ve used their RBs in the pass game more if Texas was so focused on Smith. Let the RBs try and beat them. Dump offs, passes in the flat, wheel routes, clear out and over the middle…short easy throws. Move the chains and it gets Howard in rhythm too. They’re the other explosive players. Maybe a short one goes for a big one just like the screen. If they’re forcing you to plod down the field then do so but do so with your potential home run RBs and YAC not the TE who is slower and lumbering.

Just a bad call in that spot:
I see everyone skewering the call but I didn’t mind it as much as others. I would have preferred it on first down though if you’re going to try it.

I don’t mind doing the sort of “unexpected” to try to catch them off guard like say playaction on first and goal at the 1 or take it wide a pitch out with one of your speed guys on first down (early down is important with regards to the surprise of it) etc when everyone is expecting a run up the gut.

So it doesn’t bother me as much as opposed to everyone thinking he’s making it too difficult and overthinking it. IIRC OSU stuffed a few PSU runs up the middle at the goal line in that game.

Trying to use Arch somehow wouldve been a okay too imo.

They score when they are aggressive but when they play conservative, they give the other team the chance to catch up. They don’t want to play aggressive but I think Kelly took over the last two games playcalling.

I don’t think it was about aggressive as much as Texas wasn’t going to let Smith or pretty much any of the WRs beat them with an easy quick strike. Don’t let anything get behind you can, keep everything in front.

They wanted OSU to plod down the field, which they did a couple times.

Only thing I would’ve done was involve the RBs more in the passing game rather than the TE. It’s still plodding but it’s easy, moves the chains and has the potential to be explosive with their RBs, as we saw with the screen.

Couple of thoughts. 1) 9.5 seems like too many points. ND can match the Buckeyes physically and they're stout in the secondary. 2) If ND wins it will mean they owned the Big Ten in the playoffs - Indiana, PSU, and OSU (who beat Oregon). And considering they also went through UGA the SEC champ that's an awful impressive road. If it happens of course.

Without Connor Stalions, Harbaugh is compromised. Funny X post by Nicole A.

She made similar comments about the Steelers game. Shocker, blowouts happen in the NFL too lol...and of course in all sports. Why is CFB held to some crazy level where a blowout shouldn't happen.

You also will get games like we had in the semis and ASU/Texas.

I feel like we've gotten closer games since NIL/portal. Last 3 years for sure in the semis we've had 6 good games. Champ games not so much. But the probability of having a closer gap or more evenly matched teams has gone up since NIL/portal and so the probability of close game also goes up.

I think it would've been a tough road for either winner. OSU would have had to be Tenn (a strong SEC team and defense despite what happened), Texas and a good ND team. I don't think you could say either team had an easy road or was undeserving.

I'd guess ND will try to do the same thing on defense Texas did and Michigan from what I've read (didn't see much of that game).

CFB is different because of the SEC crazies who will never give up the notion that their conference is superior and tougher than other conferences and a separate set of rules should apply to them for CFP selection. Don't think the NFL has that territoriality?

They also lost to Northern Illinois.

OSU has more players, but I think ND could keep it close. Their defense is very good and I’m sure they will copy Texas’s approach of playing the safeties back and shading extra help on Smith. Make OSU sustain drives . Think ND will need a very big game from their QB, will need to protect the ball, hit some throws downfield and most importantly , use his feet and run effectively. I like OSU by about a TD.
