Well if they're looking for a milquetoast midwesterner he's perfect!

Of course. Freeman went to OSU. Played for Urban Meyer. Ash worked for Meyer. Meyer recommended Ash to Freeman and/or Freeman was coached by Ash at OSU.

This is how football hiring goes. Plus, Ash has the look of the Irish.

You all know that this means Notre Dame will be the best hydrated team in FBS, right?

Seems like a good fit for Ash. DC is the best role he should ever have. Knows Freeman from Ohio St. Our failed coaches seems to get better jobs when they leave here.

You would think OSU would be interested in bringing him back given the success he had there right before getting the RU job. Their DC job opened up after PSU decided to make Knowles the highest paid non-HC in the minors.

Ash was a bust as a HC, but his DC skills made him look like he might be HC material and Rutgers took the chance.
Chris failed miserably and went to Texas as an analyst them moved up to the DC position.
The Texas D under him didn't compare to his time as the Buckeyes and he didn't return to the Longhorns the next season .
Ash hasn't been a DC since and I wonder why he's being considered ( if not hired already) instead of Freeman moving his DB Coach Mickens into the job.
Mike Mickens is considered an up and comer and destined to be a DC soon.
Ash has the DC position on his resume and had good Ds at OSU & Wisconsin
But as the Texas DC in 2020 his D was ranked #64 in total defense and he was gone the next season

In 2013, Chris Ash coached the secondary and served as the defensive coordinator for the Arkansas Razorbacks. During his one season with the Razorbacks, Arkansas' defense ranked #89 in total defense

Hahaha.. get this..

Wisconsin legend Barry Alvarez recommended Ash to Rutgers. We were on Wisconsin's schedule.

Could it be Barry Alvarez is recommending Ash to Notre Dame?

Wisconsin opens 2026 vs Notre Dame.

Too funny. But I think Marcus Freeman is too smart for this.

Urban Meyer also knew Ash was a slug. Never again.

"Ash has the look of the Irish." What does this even mean?

Ash was a hardass at RU? News to many of us. Always had a constipated look but don’t think he was viewed as a hardass.

Little guy with a chip on his shoulder in an area he was not familiar with. He was out of his element. One of his former player’s words. Not mine.

Have related before that at what was my first donor event, an informal thing at someone's backyard, I asked him a question about one of the players who had left the team and where they might be transferring to, and he was rather snippy and sounded annoyed at my question. I can say that if Greg was asked that same question, he would be gregarious (no pun intended), kind and say that he wishes the young man well, but he did not know.

I believe he was a really good DC at OSU ---- maybe under Urban ?? He just SUCKS as a HC
Here's an article questioning his ability , though his Texas DC gig was under Tom Herman while he went to Arkansas following Burt Bielema from Wisconsin leaving the Badger DC job to be the Razorbacks DC
After the Longhorn job, he went to the pros as a position coach and if Ash gets the imitation Irish DC job it will be a return to his being a DC.
>His defensive coordinator stops with Arkansas and Texas were both mostly a disaster. That would also be a good way to describe his tenure as the Rutgers head coach<
