City officials share plans for new supermarket to replace The Fresh Grocer

So basically, there is no new news other then the fact that they "plan" (read: hope) on having a new grocer in the space by the end of 2015.

Meanwhile, the space will have sat empty for over a year, and the demand for a grocery store in that location will only continue to grow. Without knowing the details, from an outsiders perspective it seems like they haven't been working on this issue very hard. Unacceptable in my opinion.

" a grocery store in that location" is part of the reason why fresh grocer went under. Just sticking a grocery store in an area whose potential customers are already used to patronizing someone else didn't work. And just sticking a grocery store, whose ready-made offerings paled in comparison to what was offered in the numerous, varied and nearby restaurants didn't help either. The space is in an awkward location with minimal foot traffic, no ground parking and (at least for now) adjacent to a derelict parking deck. NB needs a full service food store,of course but waiting another year won't sink them when there hasn't been one downtown since 1985

They definitely need to think outside the box for this one. A large % of the population who reside in NB is poor (locals, college students), but NB is building construction to try to lure a higher socioeconomic class of people. On top of that you have the J&J crowd along with all the commerce they could get from downtown (court house very close). Furthermore you have people coming off the train who you can get too. It is a complex situation, but also a potentially lucrative one if they can figure it out. Obviously a regular supermarket won't work here. I think that Fresh Grocer was on the right track with all the take-out options.
