Gettys is not the most talented or athletic kid on the team but his big body will be a nice asset for conference play and he is a terrific leader. He is very positive on the bench and the entire squad appears to look up to him and furthermore likes / respects him greatly.

On the floor, Gettys positions himself very well; has nice hands for a big guy (he catches the ball) and he appears to be a terrific pick up by Pikell and staff.

I was watching this game and Getty is a big dude. He was doing things that we couldn't do last year with our bigs. He was rebounding offensively and defensively. He was driving to the basket, He was blocking shots. Now granted that was against Molloy so I am interested to see what he does in a step up in competition.

CJ reminds me a little bit of Andre Lamoureux, especially with the enthusiasm. Although Andre sometimes thought he was a guard in a big man's body, CJ is a mountain and plays like a mountain. Certainly an element we haven't had in a while.

The play from Getty's that I really liked was when he got the ball at the foul line and drove to the basket for a nice layup. That's nice to see from a 7 footer.

1. I'm curious to see if he has the ability to step out and make a short mid range jumper if the defender backs off.

2. Another thing we did not get a chance to see against zone was him in pick and roll. That's a BIG BODY setting a pick and he showed some nice soft hands. Even if he does not finish he can draw some fouls and it looks like he has a nice touch from the foul line.

On a side note......Gettys had 6 Blocked Shots in one of his games against Drexel last year...they are in the same conference as UN-Wilmington.

I like Gettys presence in the post (good hands and good passer) but I hope Shaq comes along, He Played (2) min and committed (2) fouls and we will need him especially when BIG schedule begins.

I actually think Shaq only played about 20 seconds. I feel bad for him and hope he can bounce back and get some major minutes as well as produce.

Correct.....I looked at this after some poster slammed him for looking horrible on the court. He was in the game from 8:09 to 7:43 in the 2nd half. He committed 2 fouls battling for rebounds. Nervousness and rust......that's why we have OCC games, to get ready.

I'll admit, I never heard of him before tonight's game, as I really haven't been paying attention to the team, but as I said in the thread I started, I was impressed with his play tonight. Big body, knows how to position himself and has good hands and is a pretty good FT shooter, although he's obviously not very athletic. Will likely struggle against more athletic big men, but he's certainly a nice addition to the team. Like his leadership intangibles, as a grad transfer, too - great video of him cheering Nigel's dunk.

I was in sec 205 tonight and saw CJ for the first time this year. Was surprised how big he was when I saw him and I remarked about it. My daughter turned and said, "Hey, there is CJ!" She sees him in the training room from time to time.

He was a pleasant surprise. I loved when he got on a roll and started waving his arms to get the crowd into it. My daughter said she was not surprised because he is a character!!!

Remains to be seen on how he handles B1G comp but he is a good addition regardless.

I think what we have to be careful of is not demanding more of the kid than he's got to give. I think he's an excellent pickup and adds a dimension while by the same token he's gonna have some bad nights in the BIG where his weaknesses are exposed. Did that sound negative? Wasn't intended to.

I believe I sat next to you tonight at the game. In fact I think I was in your seat because we were shifted a few seats down. Was that you in 205?

It was my wife's first ever bball game and she asked afterwards why I had been so down on them the last few years because they looked good to her. LOL!!!!!!!!!!!

Any of us of a certain age remember what we would be yelling from the stands if he played for the other team?

I know this guy does... @Chags

For those of us who remember him, he reminds me of Grant Billmeir of seton hall

Hey- I was in 205 tonight- I think you guy were sitting in front of me ( I kept moving my seat because I was hitting people with my knees...)...

I like the energy CJ brings- but I'm concerned about his lack of speed when he has to run the court against some Big 10 athletes.

I think you were bumping RU848789! Team looked a lot better tonight than the last few seasons. I thought CJ brought a real positive energy both in game and on bench. Good addition. It will be a lot tougher for him in B1G games. Hope he can hold his own.

Yep, that was me in 205. Nice "meeting" you guys. Great game - hopeful for the season...

Many posters are saying Gettys will struggle against athletic big men in the B1G. Well, I think the smaller Centers will struggle playing against a HUGE space eating 7'0, 280 Center in the low post.

I agree. I wasn't aware that the B1G had a bunch of super star centers. I don't remember too many games in the past two years where the centers were killing us. Certainly there will be some more athletic centers, many of whom may weigh a lot less than CJ. They may block some of his shots. They won't, however, be able to push him out of the post.

DePaul has size up front that is similar to Molloy and Drexel. Let's see if CJ brings the show to Chicago.

I think Gettys can hold his own against most of the B1G. I'm mostly concerned about his fouling. He got a away with a few "over the backs" yesterday.

This remains to be seen. He doesn't have the quickness, jumping ability, defensive ability or offensive moves to test B1G big men IMO.

If this is not true than why did he play for UNC-Wilm and not in a major conference ? He averaged 3-5 ppg for UNC-Wilm in his 4 years there. How does that translate into a good rotation big man in the B1G ?

Lets be careful about annointing him as a key big man for RU. I'll be happy if he performs well in the OOC season for us.

he will be in foul trouble vs the athletic 6'10" which we haven't seen him up against yet

@toby83 Can you name these athletic 6'10 centers in the Big 10 that are such prolific scorers in the low post ?

I assume you know that the college game is MORE about athletic players from the PG to PF positions and not about Centers down low? But.........maybe you don't !!

5PPG ? Do you know that UNC-Wilmington played an up-tempo offense? That means the Center is not a focal point of the offense. Let me answer....NO.

I asked someone else.....name these athletic and prolific scorers from the Center position in the Big 10?

Isaac Haas of Purdue and Thomas Bryant of IU are two that come to mind.
