Solution to consider. The Alley was a great effort by Hobbs to facilitate PRE-GAME tailgating. Apparently some students think this a great location and opportunity to expand it to an all day party location ala Woodstock. And now who gets left holding the bag and being made to look like a fool....Rutgers Athletic and Hobbs. And now a segment of students want to promote a boycott of the games. I say screw those who feel this way.....the solution is simple 5 minutes after the scheduled kickoff clear out The Alley of any students etc remaining in the parking lot.

The purpose of The Alley was to set up a specific area for student to tailgate BEFORE the game and not make it an all day block party. If students want some location to party all day there is plenty of space in Johnson, Buccealuh Park or other locations on campus that perhaps the party goers can find suitable or get approval for.

This would keep everyone happy..
Football fans, students who want to party and administrative personnel. It's that simple. The people with the tough job will be those charged with enforcing the rules.

according to the students who were there and quoted in the OTB piece today it was indeed closed at 11:30 last Saturday. And that is exactly what I saw as I was walking past it from the black lot.

Any designated area should be cleared out 30 minutes before so people could actually be in the stadium when the team comes out of the tunnel.

That being said, I wish they would just let the free market dictate where students went. Ban party trucks, U-Hauls and DJs in pick up trucks and tell the rent a cop assholes not to harrass anyone who looks like they're 25 or under. This forcing human beings to tailgate in a certain area will likely continue to fail, as I have predicted for 2 years running.

Maybe that's a component of a solution. Maybe. But there are other issues to tackle as well from both the students and universities perspectives.

I agree w/this, mostly.

Although I'm not calling the cops assholes even if they are over-zealous. Cops are paid to enforce the law and keep people safe. If they think underage kids are drinking, they are actually obligated to investigate.

I think there could be ways to mitigate things so that the same groups aren't hassled continuously. Cops could put on wristbands for anybody they check so the next group of cops coming through can just ask to see the wristbands and move on quickly. And/or cops could be restricted to a single patrol area so that they get to know the folks in that area (who, if they are smart, will welcome the cops and give them water or food or whatever - in other words, bring the cops into the community).

But yeah, ban the things you said in the tailgate lots and that would go a long way towards helping. Also limit the number of people allowed in a given tailgate unless some prior permit is given. I'd set the limit by parking pass. So... 10 people per pass maybe.

Norte Dame shuts down their on campus lots by kickoff. Kinda surprised me when I was out there.
I'm surprised that most of us don't know that's what we're supposed to do too.

I don't have my tickets or ticket book in front of me but hasn't something similar always been the policy at Rutgers...you go into the game or you leave the area.

I know it's not really enforced, but maybe it should be?

Notre Dame.....hmm maybe they are on to something here. There is always a small group that ruins things for the majority. And of course typical Rutgers either overreacts or fumbles the ball on how to react.

.

Agreed. I start to get real antsy if I'm not inside 1-hour prior to the game. Just how I was taught.

Agreed. This is what I posted on the Round Table yesterday.

The problem now is whatever Rutgers next move is everyone will be watching. My guess is they will make a lot stricter and tamed down version of the Alley and the 21 + enforcement will be in place to drink.

I've stood by my claim that I don't think it's a good idea at all to coralle the whole undergrad population into 1 school sponsored area and have the under 21 crowd have fun without the risk associated with it. I really don't know what the AD department was thinking by creating Instagram, Twitter handles of the Alley. If this was kept low key it may have worked this year.

I think the only real and smart solution is to go back to the old days of the Blue Lot. Kick every single Middle Sex officer out of there and have it be a 100% RU patrolled lot.

Give out passes to student groups and make the rules more strict: Certain # of wristbands, no ginormous gatherings, no standing on trucks. If a group acts up strip their privilege away and face school sanctions. If a student acts up by fighting, stealing, ruining property they face school sanctions and get arrested. Maybe keep the student groups on the ends of the rows and give them a little more space to they aren't sandwiched in between a family or older crowd.

This way it wont be an "official" school sponsored lot but the kids will be able to drink without worrying about getting a ticket and the risk and liability will be a lot less to RU.

Everything I have read and seen indicates that they did close it down 1/2 hour before the game. See the thread about new traffic problems that were caused by the mass of students leaving the alley.
