Coach out there Recruiting - Cliff Omoruyi

I have faith that pike and his crew are not getting outworked on the recruiting trail

Cliff looks nothing like is brother Eugene though

He is not related to Eugene. I was at the game the other night at Linden. He scored 8 points on I think 4 monster slams. He is only a junior and does have a long wing span. He needs to get rebounds though. He is big and strong and I think he will only get better.

Are you suggesting that it might not come down to outworking other programs?
Before I answer that, define out working other programs please.

Is it more calls/texts/Facetime/Twitter DMs than any other program?

Not counting travel team events Rutgers can go see the kid seven times per recruiting calender year.

Just like every other Division I school.

I'd be more curious to know what you would think "out working" would mean, given your experience with recruits.

Do some schools visit the HS coach more often, or build that relationship more strongly? Or the AAU coach? Calls/texts with not just the player, but the school, parents, etc? Quality of calls/texts/etc rather than volume? I'm not up on all the recruiting guidelines, but I'd have to imagine some schools make more concerted efforts than others within that framework.

In your experience, if two schools both reach the maximum number of in-person contacts, what can one school do to "outwork" the other (short of envelopes being exchanged, of course)?

Don’t understand this kid wanting to go elsewhere. You’ve got a head coach with s great relationship to the program , a position of need and immediate playing time available for a rising team in your home state . Also Pike and Jay young with a proven track record of developing big men ; even one that went to your high school . Are we not paying enough money to get these guys

Shell I went to school in Florida. Just needed out. I am not the only one. There is an outmigration in this state that seems to apply to all ages and colors and all walks of life..

I get it , trust me , but besides getting out of Jersey , what he literally has a perfect situation here . Sometimes the grass isn’t always greener. At least we know Pike will be here and not caught on some wire tap promising to pay guys off like some of these other coaches we lose guys too

We are DEFINITELY in the mix for Cliff... more than a long shot.
Yeah, until he pulls in some “top 8 recruiting school” type offers, I’m pretty sure our chances are higher than that with his current offer list. Maybe Syracuse is a threat. Seton Hall will try to remain in it too. Can’t see Uconn. Miami would shock me. Maybe Florida? I think he ends up here unless maybe he gets a Kentucky or Kansas type offer.

My interpretation is that when certain high profile programs show an interest in an athlete, outworking other programs is irrelevant.
I have not seen LSU mentioned here as an Omoruyi destination. Roselle Catholic’s Naz Reid is at LSU, and the LSU coach is a great recruiter.

FWIW the LSU coach was also subpoenaed today in the college basketball FBI investigation, so....
Will have to wait and see where this goes.

I was told that Wade's and Miller’s testimony is part of the defense’s plan to show that Christian Dawkins was part of a bigger problem within college basketball. If true, this isn’t the FBI trying to pin something on Wade and/or Miller or anything of that sort.

Oh, so you’re saying they might not get caught.
Cool.

Something tells me our chances are decent. Just from what I have read, it doesn't seem like there is a clear leader, and it is still really early.

The FBI doesn’t really want them because most of the coaches didn’t commit any federal crimes. Don’t get me wrong, the coaches named in these documents are low level criminals and immoral to the bone. The NCAA will be the only one group left to go after them and they most likely won’t give a damn because they’re useless.

Might not even testify. The notice that Miller and Wade will be subpoenaed is not a subpoena. Though I expect them to eventually be subpoenaed. Much remains to be seen. Meanwhile the NCAA’s investigation into the Arizona program is ongoing and the results of that might not be known for a long time.

I hate to take away from the positive vibes these days, but this team is 6-11 in conference play. Hard to call a losing team a “perfect situation” even if the future looks brighter than before.

Quality of calls/texts is important. If a Coach is hitting a kid up everyday or a couple of times a day the conversation can't just be "How are you? What's new?"

Having the head Coach involved is important. Having the entire staff involved is important.

Out-of-state State coaches are sometimes given more credit by the kid when they come and watch kids play than coaches from schools nearby. There can be a "he came all this way to watch me play when he could have going to see kids closer to where he lives," reaction.

Recruiting the entire family is important. In one recruitment I covered the grandmother was the key person. One Coaching staff out of 20+ offers knew that and recruited her. They landed the kid. Grandma was a great source of information for me as well.

Great insight into the process - thanks!

I just realized this was the Clifford Omoruyi thread. I was texting with his guy and he told me that Clifford is "feeling everyone...especially those that are truly recruiting him." I only asked him about two schools (UF and RU). He said that RU coaches "have been out to a few games this year." He didn't go beyond that.

He’ll end up at a blue blood.

Maybe. It wouldn't shock me if he does, that is if a blue blood, eventually offers him. At the same time I wouldn't be shocked if he ended up someplace like Georgia Tech either.
