Coach out there Recruiting - Cliff Omoruyi

I hate to take away from the positive vibes these days, but this team is 6-11 in conference play. Hard to call a losing team a “perfect situation” even if the future looks brighter than before.
How close is RU from 8-9 in conference? An improbable shot from Iowa player and a missed FT in ILL games. Would an 8-9 record change your tune on RU being a “great situation” rather than a “perfect situation”? Not even counting EO being out for home game against NW. Yup RU has been that close to being a .500 in conference play team and the season ain’t over yet.

GO RU

I just realized this was the Clifford Omoruyi thread. I was texting with his guy and he told me that Clifford is "feeling everyone...especially those that are truly recruiting him." I only asked him about two schools (UF and RU). He said that RU coaches "have been out to a few games this year." He didn't go beyond that.

Is it possible for our coaches to attend more games than that?
Or our game schedule won’t allow it?

And can we send anyone out to watch the games (but not talk to him), or only Pike and the main assistants?

Seems like we should, if possible, send SOMEONE out to watch every single game (if possible) and refuse to be outworked.

Also - not getting a good vibe from your feedback about Cliff’s “guy.”

To me, his “guy” implies the feeling that college basketball recruiting is really slimy (i.e., $ being exchanged in some way).

If I was a parent of a high major recruit, I would appreciate insights from a “guy”, but expect to make the final decision myself (with my son and daughter), and not have “the guy” have so much power.

No idea if Cliff’s “guy” is on the up and up or not.

Only the head coach and the three assistant coaches are allowed to recruit off campus ( attend high school, travel team games, practices).

The NCAA gives a certain number of recruiting days per year. I believe the maximum number of recruiting days for men's basketball is 130. But how they calculate those days is a very special type of math. Each program is limited to 7 evaluation days for a prospect. So it would be a significant violation of the rules to go to every high school game that a prospect plays in. It is also very unlikely that a prospect's high school schedule and any college team's schedule would be so in sync that the college coaches would even be available to attend every one of the prospect's games if that were allowed by the NCAA.

What I think Clifford's guy was saying with his "feeling everyone...especially those that are truly recruiting him," comment is that some schools have offered but he doesn't hear from some of them regularly, haven't come to a game or practice.

Btw, almost every African prospect has "a guy". Sometimes it is someone who helped bring the kid to the United States. Someone who has a relationship with his parents who may still be living in Africa. For example, I know an African player who is a senior in college and he has not seen his mother since he left Africa to come to the United States 7 years ago. She will be coming to his senior night.

She entrusted a married couple, who has their own children, to be his host family in the United States. They look after him as if he was their own child.

Those are the stories that people almost never hear about but they happen all the time. The stories we do hear about are when a prospect's "guy" is shady and that leads many people to believe that all of those people are shady.

Thanks for taking the time, Russ.
That was very insightful (and appreciated).

Hope it works out for us with Clifford.

Seems like Jay Young and the rest of the staff would do wonders for him.
And assuming he is a good kid, you would think he would fit in well with the other players and culture Pike is creating, and at a school with excellent diversity.

Since we have so many guys from overseas, Clifford would be a perfect compliment to keep it going!

Cliff is #1 on my personal recruiting board for 2020. We must get local high-major players like this if we want to climb to the top half of the B1G. Three star kids (even a lot of them) will only get us so far.

Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Heck no. Come on, Pike, let's get this kid!

Curious: who would be your 2 and 3?

The recruit locally paradigm has killed us for decades. Get Big Ten caliber players who want to compete in the Big Ten. Does not matter where they live. Consistently landing elite local players will be a by-product of sustained winning (and learning to do the “extra” things necessary to making elite players and their families happy). Doing otherwise is putting the cart before the horse. The Big Ten has a very large geographic footprint. It wouldn’t bother any of us season ticket buyers if we landed an elite sharpshooter and front court player from Chicago or Detroit or the heart of Indiana or the DC area.

I don't disagree with you, as I'd be happy with any 4-star "big" of the same quality as Cliff. It's just that I think that we would have less chance of landing an out-of-state top 50 player.

This one smells like Alvarado, the Martin brothers, Hyatt and massoud.

What are the fallback options?
