Want to start by saying I’m a fan of Pikell, decent coach and certainly an asset to RU off the court. But….Lot of talk about needing more NIL $ for a more competitive team. I wonder if given the same roster, would Painter have a 500 team? I don’t think so. Conversely, if Pikell were at Purdue with their roster would he be 16-5? Similar football thoughts. Schiano and Day were at Ohio St and when Meyer left it was preordained Day would be the guy. But if it were given to Schiano, would he have won a national championship? ThiughtS

I thhink Painter would’ve done a better job this year but I’m not sure he could’ve gotten Rutgers out of the basement in the first place as Jordan’s replacement.

On Day, I don’t see anything special about him. OSU sells itself. I think it’s possible Ash could’ve won a Natty there TBH. I don’t think Day could’ve turned Rutgers around and it’s easily conceivable he would’ve had a tenure here similar to Ash’. No history with rebuilds so I’m not sure why one would assume he’d be good at it.

Meanwhile over at PSU, after losing to them in the playoffs James Franklin poached the DC from Notre Dame for a cool $3M per year. Talk about first world problems... 🙄

Painter is a great coach but also a system guy. I suspect his record might even be worse with RU's roster. He wins by starting upperclassmen with years in his system with a talented freshman or two sprinkled in. Purdue has some of the best continuity in the league.

I mean Painter’s ‘22-’23 squad had an all-freshman backcourt of Smith and Loyer, dude’s just a winner imo

Painter recruits guys better suited to passing, cohesive offense, 5+ pass designed sequences to set up a good shot, create mismatches, etc. e.g. more talented versions of Princeton players. Pike recruits athletes, iso scorers (maybe a 2-man game set plays), and much less suited to organized team offense. In the past too, mostly streetball. Geo, RHJ and now Ace and whoever...you can be sure that this is what attracted Ace and Dylan...opportunity to showcase rather than an opportunity to play team offense.

Neither philosophy is necessarily better, it just comes down to how effective the players are in their respective systems.

Obviously, Painter's players have been more successful in his system than Pike's players in theirs, and players on most other teams too. Neither coach would be more successful with the other's roster than with their own.

Dentists don't practice dermatology. Not interchangeable. Neither are players. They fit some systems and not others.
