Living in Jersey I know the Rutgers institution fits the B1G mold as far as academics and culture...things I've heard though are that the B1G could have convinced a school like Syracuse to jump from the ACC instead and brought just as much exposure to the NYC metro area, with more of a football tradition, more so even than Maryland and obviously a very good basketball program (what they don't say is they've had their own run in with scandal recently as well). That the basketball boost alone would have moved the needle enough to warrant a midline football program.
Things you heard? Obviously from ignorant idiots like the one that wrote this article. This whole thing was studied and vetted for years. There is no other team (ND included) that gets as much attention in the NY Metro market. Nate Silver published very in depth study that proves that point a few years before RU was officially invited.
Syracuse isn't even in the NY Metro market, and they have always been a non entity in NYC in football. Adding non AAU member Syracuse does not fit with the Economic Research Consortium which is the BIG10. That is worth 10 times what Athletics brings to member schools. Is worth much more than than to the regional economies too.
Syracuse would have jump in a second if the B10 actually talked to them about joining. Nobody tried to convince them to come to the B10.
