Love this quote:

“I heard them (the crowd) singing it, but you know, Pikiell is so into the game he doesn't notice," Sanders said. "I said, 'Happy birthday,' to him, and he said, 'Hit 80 points and crack this team, that's my happy birthday.' So that's what I did for him."

Ohio,

His defense was very good at times and in the 2nd half spotty. He got beat off the dribble a lot in the 2nd half and his defense in transition was very poor.

One play said it all. He swipes at the ball and misses and then Williams comes flying out of no where to block the shot.

Corey did a great job offensively both in scoring, making good passes off penetration, and not forcing things. I'd say 75 percent of defensive possessions he was locked in with most being in the 1st half.

Not to ruffle any feathers Souf hurt us big time. Corey could have used more than a possession breather, but Souf got toasted so bad he was pullled.

All in all was very happy with Corey and I said earlier today in a post that Corey was going to have a break through game soon.

Great to see Corey play so well tonight and that 2-3 minute stretch in the first half, where he simply dominated the game with his defense and offense, was a thing of beauty.

It sounds ridiculous but as i said in the Geo thread, overplaying the 3 and getting beat off the dribble was part of the strategy tonight. They only gave up 20 second half points.

I plan to watch the entire game tonight.

As I mentioned in the game thread I stayed late at work so I was watching on and off. His D looked very good when I watched...fighting thru picks and hustling. Finished with 3 steals. Did Bryant have a ton of transition points?

I did see the 2nd half foul on Souf..but I also that nice pass into the paint to Doorson for the finish in the lane.

overplaying the 3 line was a strategy, but not getting beat off the dribble. B1G play we will face perimeter guys that are huge threats from 3 and can get in to the paint and make plays. If it was OK getting beat off the dribble Souf would not have been yanked right after getting beat.

Many games are won in CBB on the talent/impact your backcourt has. We defend. We rebound. If we can get solid to good backcourt play (compared to other B1G teams) we are going to be a pain in the neck.

Consistency is what will be needed from Sanders and Freeman starting next Tuesday against Florida State and in B1G games.
Freeman probably shouldn't see the floor against FSU. They are way to big inside, and his outside shooting just isn't there. If he plays, we will see a lot of forced inside shots, and blocks.

I hacked in to coach's computer and saw a file gameplan_seminoles and found this

sanders 38 souf 2
baker 40
thaim 10 williams 30
eugene 20 nathan 20
Doorson 30 sa 10

Just read the story and I Just want to get back to the OP for 1 comment.

I think the way Pikiell handled this absolutely proves he is not a Bullshi!!ter. He does not engage in a lot of coach speak as Carino stated in the article . He publicly told everyone what happened and why it happened. No Filter. No worries about hurting someone's feeling.

IMO, I think It's safe to say, that when Pikiell comments about a Player on this team.......he means it.

I'm sure the strategy will change against guys who can shoot and do damage at the rim. I think Souf was pulled after he couldn't get over a screen and the guy got past him. Tough to remember though. That said, on the radio in postgame, Pikiell pretty much said the strategy was to overplay the 3 and force their players to drive to the middle of the court and the trees. Will see what happens with the defense going forward. You have to admit, giving up only 20 points in the 2nd half is good defense.

DP....do you have a link to the complete Press Coverage ? I saw two different versions and both were cutoff at about the 5:00 mark.

I don't. But the talk about funneling the shooters away from the three point line came from Joe Boylan and Pikiell during the radio postgame coverage.

I was not doubting you, I just hate that the video I saw was cutoff.

That is the proper response by Corey. Hopefully it continues.

His game is going to be predicated on D. It's his best opportunity to make an impact, and will lead to his area of offense where he is best- attacking in unsettled situations.

When it gets settled, I like Baker more at the point.

Looking over the running score....
In the 2nd half we went through a stretch of 7:26 where we gave up 17 points and 9 offensive rebounds. I really think that is what is sticking with me.

The key is 100% correct by Greene on Corey being more consistent AND trying to find minutes for Sanders and more importantly, Baker as we move through the season. Souf may not be the answer, but I don't think it's a big deal IF you are willing to spot minutes to Issa Thiam at the guard position AND that only makes sense if Thiam plays defense like he did at the end of last season.

That also means more minutes for Eugene and Freeman at the 3 or 4, dependent on matchups, instead of trying to force feed minutes to Souf.

The top 9 rotational players are Sanders, Baker, Williams, Thiam, Eugene, Freeman, Doucoure, Sa and Doorson....then Souf is your 10th best option on offense or defense, based on his inability to defend right now and his lack of offense as a shooter.

Back to Sanders, I am not surprised at the bounce back performance....what happens now is Sanders doesn't need to generate all of his offense by himself, Baker and Williams can both draw attention to teams as shooters, which should (in theory) create more driving lanes and less help defense off of Baker and Williams.

Baker, Sanders, Thiam,Freeman, Doucoure

First subs Williams for Thiam, Omoyuri for Freeman.

Second subs Dadika for Baker.

I'd like to hear reasoning for Mensah over Dadika. Shoot.

@higgins3, you beat me to it as I was typing. I know Pike has brought him in at times already this year - is he no better as a couple possession at a time option to spell Sanders or Baker?

There are 120 minutes at the 1-3 positions, and we have basically four guys who are playing those spots right now (Sanders, Baker, Williams, Thiam). That's an average of 30/min a game for each, which is too much to expect across all of them for a full season. Yes, Omoruyi can slide up to the 3, but he's not a shooter - nor is Freeman, really. The only other guys who can play guard are Mensah and Dadika, really... and Mensah has been more liability than asset so far (and fouls as a guard almost as often as Sa and Doucoure do as bigs).

@Greene Rice FIG Just watched the moment with Souf and you're right. It wasn't a screen. He got beat, but he also fouled on the play too, which I think contributed to his getting pulled. Pikiell has been emphasizing defending without fouling.

Let's stop the Dadika talk. I thought Souf did a good job offensively in the 1st half where on consecutive possessions he found a shooter.

I think the end game here is Souf comes in for Sanders and we go 5 possessions of zone which allows Baker a little time off defensively.

Souf will find Issa Mike and Geo for spot up 3s

Everyone loves an Underdog ( Dadika ) and the fact that he is Ricky's boy, everyone wants to see the legacy kid play.

I go with Pikiell.......he made his pre-season comments and Pike does not hand out accolades haphazardly. If he said something about Souf, I believe he has a role for him that he likes for this team. It may just be when he wants to go uptempo as he expands what the team is doing.

My concern with Mensah is that we don't have any more Div-III schools on the schedule.

Against Div-III CCNY, his stat line was: 19 min, 7 pts (3-4 shooting, 1-7 FT), 6 RB, 3 Ast, 1 Stl, 1 TO
Against very low-level Div-I competition, his stat line across 4 games is: 26 min, 0 pts, 0-3 shooting, no FT attempts, 2 RB, 3 Ast, 2 TO, 5 PF

If that is his performance level against kenpom 300+ schools, what will it be against conference teams?

Watched first half of game and I think Souf did just fine for his role of giving Corey a breather. He even got a nice assist down to the post to Doucure or Omyouri I believe for a bucket. Posters need to stop sweating this RU player. It’s almost to Corey proportions and he just got here. Souf is good enough for Pike so he’s good enough for me. When seeing him for first time had to laugh about poster that wrote that “Souf looks like the 40 yr old guy you see at Y gym.” That’s some funny sh*t. Looks like a brick house though. He’ll definitely be able to power through screens.

Do you always find sh*t in the the silver lining? Amazing :( You're the only guy I can think of who gets a BJ & $1 million from a banging chick and complains about it non stop. S.O.S.

My concern is that you're writing a kid off based on 26 minutes of playing time. I haven't been a fan of the Souf offer since inception, but imagine if coaches did the same thing you did. There's plenty of time for us to be proven wrong (and I hope we are). Gotta give it time.

@Russ Wood I know you probably bounce around several boards...but, just between you and us Rutgers fans...this is your favorite team board right? lol
There are five boards that I visit multiple times per day, each day, and the Rutgers Men's Basketball board is one of them.

I visit other boards on the network when I have information for those subscribers.

There is a great community on this board, additionally it is a basketball board so that makes it a fun visit for me.

I have a better feeling about Mensah's ability to contribute than I did for Justin Goode, but so far he just doesn't seem ready to contribute. Maybe Pike is trying to ease him in to the speed of the Div-I game, but through five games the only time I've seen him feel really comfortable and competitive was when he was running point for the walkons against a depleted CCNY team in the last 5-10 min of the game. As far as I've seen right now, he's a "use very sparingly" option to give Geo or Corey a short blow, or to take them aside for a possession's worth of quick coaching before getting them back out there.

I expected from his Juco stats that he wasn't going to contribute much from a scoring perspective. He's not a shooter, and he doesn't do well at the line - his points were mostly on dribble penetration or rebounded putbacks. Given that, I expected him to be more of a defensive presence or floor general type... but haven't seen either of those emerge yet.

It's possible he's still got jitters, and he's still trying to feel his way in Div-I... much like Geo took a bit to find his shot. It's also possible that his benefit comes next year, after he's had a year to acclimate.

Right now I'm afraid of games against conference foes where our guards get in foul trouble and he needs to play extended minutes against Big Ten starters.

Hopefully he finds his groove a bit more tomorrow against ECU, and continues to get more comfortable as the year goes on. If he could be relied on to give 8+ solid minutes in a game, and 10+ in games where we run into foul trouble, that'd be a huge help
