Court club news?

Per Jay Young, they are targeting a 3, 4, or 3/4 hybrid player for our last 2019 scholarship, and they have some guys in mind.

Things can change but this is what many here have guessed as the preferred path. With Eugene and Thiam kinda like your hybrid 3 or 4 and both juniors, Harper is really the only other option to play either position right now. The other problem is that when either Eugene or Harper aren't on the floor, the offense and defense drops off dramatically.

Also, it sounds as if Doucoure is expected to return, but he needs to get his back healthy as it’s still bothering him. They will really need him to play key minutes in my opinion, especially if they use the last scholarship on a 6’7” shooter type player. Even with that, it will be a different team defensively without Doorson next year. At another point Young talked about having the luxury of single guarding the post this year. But next year, when Johnson is out of the game, they may need to do some double teams against big post players.

I took it that he was looking for a big but a 3/4 was also a possibility. Definitely got the impression that although a 3 type was a possibility a big was the priority.

Hmmm, maybe I zoned out a bit as he spoke! It’s possible, all I heard was the 3/4 hybrid part.

We don’t need another big assuming Duke is healthy. We desperately need a 3/4 hybrid.
Doucoure is about 6-7. He’s not really a Big Ten “big” in the Doorson/Johnson sense. And in his limited action since he’s been on campus he hasn’t shown that he can be effective on the blocks on either end of the floor. We need big man depth to replace Doorson. Not sure where Doucoure fits in, frankly.

It was discussed by Justin Piasecki that there was/is a disconnect from RU BBall alumni over the years. Lack of mentorship and presence at games. He is trying to change this and the team/admin seem to be receptive.
I can count on my hand how many former bball players have been at the RAC recently. Douby, Mike Williams, Justin, and more? I'd also like to see more former players at CC meetings as well.

Thoughts?

Doucoure is bigger than 6'7". That's a ridiculous statement. He started at center for us most of last year. He has issues, but being that much smaller than listed isnt one of them. he has at least PF size

Pretty sure Mike Dabney was sitting mid-court next to the Towers at the Iowa game.

Look at him standing next to other big guys on the team. They list him at 6-9 but he's clearly not. I'm just saying we need another big body that can bang a little with the wide bodies in the Big Ten. He may yet have a productive role on this team but we need center depth more than PF depth behind Shaq Carter and Eugene IMO. From what I've seen, I'm not counting on him as a good replacement for Shaq Doorson and Myles Johnson cannot shoulder the load by himself, clearly.

Found Justin's talk to be fascinating and got some interesting takes on former teammates and coaches. He said that he felt that players could benefit from the connections with alumni/boosters to help them in their post-basketball lives but that the Mulcahy administration thought that boosters had gotten too close to the players under Bannon and limited interactions. Under Waters, there was really zero being done to help prepare players for post-RU/basketball life.

The lack of BBall alumni outreach probably had to do with just the sheer amount of upheaval in the program over the last 20 years - 5 ADs, 6 coaches, general (steak of?) turmoil. He felt that this was changing and that they have had letterwinner days the past few years and this year's had the best turnout so far. I think having a more competitive and stable basketball and overall athletic program will have a lot to do with getting guys to connect with the program again.

Coach Jay Young had some very positive comments regarding Jacob Young. He’s the fastest player on the team and he can create his own shot. On the scout team in practice he plays the opponents best guard and he is a difficult cover. We should have a very talented and deep guard position next year. He also indicated how nicely the young team has improved on defense since start of year.

Yeah, I specifically looked for that during opening of MSU game and looked for pics. He's taller than Eugene, our current PF, almost as tall as Thiam who is 6'10". Looked up pics of him D'ing up Angel Delgado last year and they looked the same size. Read an article by Carino from his freshman year where Carino specifically stated that Deshawn Freeman was "generously listed" at 6'7" but indicated Doucoure was a legit 6'9".

I'm just saying, Doucoure needs development and is probably more of a 4 than a 5, but his size isnt an issue. MSU starts 6'8" guys at center, as do many other B1G teams.

Yes, it's hard to form strong relationships with a revolving door.
