Critical MSU Special Team Mistake?

I was watching in the 4th quarter from high up and was shocked to see MSU line up to receive the kickoff twice with ten guys up front and one back. That left the lone MSU player responsible for a very large area. It seemed like a no-brainer that this presented an opportunity for RU to kick it to around the 25 yard line and have one of our guys recover it. The first time RU kicked it into the endzone but the second time we executed a perfect kick to about the 30 resulting in our recovery and of course a touchdown on the next play. Is that a major mistake by MSU or is that a typical formation when anticipating an onsides kick? That one special teams decision may have been decisive in the game's outcome.
