Did any other FBS program have it worse than us in terms of players decommiting from the 2016 class? I get why it happens.. new coach, major culture change, new offensive/defensive philosophies, but 14 decommits in a power 5 conference?! That figure seems pretty high and is way worse than the mass exodus of prospects in 2014. Granted this figure does include Malcolm Pridgeon, who I'm not sure if he ever committed in the first place.

Remember this was suppose to be dreamteam2016. Turned out to be our worst class in a decade. Funny how things work.

It is funny in a 'sigh' kind of way...though we had 'good' classes in 11,12 and 13 and it got us to...4-8 last year with a disaster of a staff. I believe in our current staff, but wish everything didn't have to be so Job-like with us...

Miami had 24 decommits this class...

It could be worse

Obviously, you care a lot about other programs - your judgments of this being crap are only in the context of being compared to other programs, few of which that had regime changes. Then you get carried away about Taysir Mack going to IU, when RU is looking strong with WR and ATHs

Some players want a guaranteed starring role right away, and they'll go to where it is most likely. That seems to be Temple's big selling point.

Again, you guys are not listening to Ash's message. "Fight or Flight" is not just a catchy slogan, it represents a mindset. We live in a nation of entitlement, and it starts at a very early age. When someone comes along and says, sorry but you will have to "compete" to earn that spot on the team. We will not hand you anything, and by the way, you will also be asked to prove yourself on Special Teams first. For the lazy, the entitled, and those with a very high opinion of themselves, this is not the flattering statement they are used to hearing. So, when someone else comes along and basically tells them all the great things that they want to hear, they jump to that! i.e., Indiana
We are better off, trimming the fat(no pun intended) in the beginning than giving out scholarships to underperforming players. We want loyal, hungry, tough kids, who constantly work at their craft daily. There is a reason that there are so many washouts with 4 and 5 stars next to their name, they never lived up to the potential. Would I want a team laced with 4 and 5 star players, of course! But, only if they were the right 4 & 5 star players.
So, get off the edge, and prepare. I think many here will be pleasantly surprised with what Ash and Company are building here.

All I know is that if Ash turns out to be a good coach, some of them are really gonna kick themselves for jumping ship.

Some had to go because they weren't going to fit in the new system, but others left a situstion that would have had them playing in one of the top 2 conferences in college football.

Pay attention to this post - LOADED with very good points. Points people to this day REFUSE to believe or acknowledge. I bolded one that many recruits, believe it or not, were turned off to, but is absolutely necessary to change the culture.

Star players are absolutely necessary if you hope to compete for championships. But where the program is at the moment, character is lot more important than stars. That goes for the coaches too by the way - or a certain coordinator. Ash's first year is all about building the foundation, setting the culture, ensuring ALIGNMENT. Rutgers fans need to understand the forest from the trees.

Some of the ranking methodologies are rather simplistic - and if the goal was purely to get a 50ish score instead of a 70ish Ash could have have relaxed some of that "alignment" nonsense - and brought in some players based entirely upon how they would immediately impact the rating score..... why not just relax some of those constraints and embrace some of those players with red flags hanging all over them?..... or he could stay focused & make progress on his plan.

Remember this was suppose to be dreamteam2016. Turned out to be our worst class in a decade. Funny how things work.

The Dream Team was good hype for awhile ....but that hope burned out long ago when again no Top 10 NJ recruits committed to RU.
Unfortunately a bad dose reality has set in when our 2016 Recruiting Class is dead last in the B1G and actually ranks below power programs like SMU, Tulane, Temple, Florida Atlantic, and Middle Tennessee .

Need to make the best of it....and rebound in 2017.

So every player that left was a lazy, self-entitled asshole who won't play STs while everyone that stayed is a selfless plugger who puts the team above his individual success?

SURELY YOU JEST

Why do you make it black and white? No, not every player, but many were. Russo for example, was told that he is better than any of our QBs here today and would instantly be given playing time. Same with Wright. After the new staff told them they would need to compete, it was very easy for Barthel to convince them to go to Temple. And it's also not only about being lazy and not wanting to play ST. It's about alignment. If during the OV a player expresses how he thinks the old staff was better, what do you think the new staff would do with that recruit? Do you really want a kid in the locker room undermining everything you're trying to do?

Ash inherited a toxic locker room. People don't want to hear about Flood, but that's what he did. He created a very toxic locker room. People are clamoring for Rashan Gary and star players. They don't understand, we need to fumigate the room first, salvage what you can, get some Ikea furniture. Do that first, then can you go hire an interior decorator and go to Ethan Allen.

1. I didn't make it black and white, the post I responded to did.

2. Everything I heard about Russo was that he was a hard working kid and a good locker room presence . Everything I heard after the coaching change was that he wasn't a fit in the new offense. And I heard nothing about statements saying the old staff was better How does that make him lazy? Why shouldn't he look around if what he is hearing is that he is no longer a fit?

3. So you say Wright wasn't thrilled about STs? There were 14 decommits. Were none of them thrilled about STs? Did all their new schools, UNC for example, promise them instant playing time and no STs? I don't think so.

By the way, how would you guys feel had we kept or landed guys like Quashon Alexander, Elijah Johnson, Jonah Morris, Yasir Durant, Pennamon, etc? If the staff cared about stars or recruiting PR many of these guys, if not all of them, would have be wearing scarlet today.

Nobody with the new staff told Russo he is no longer a fit. The one who told him that is a "volunteer" at Temple collecting Rutgers paycheck. He was also told by the old staff that he had a chance of early PT. The new staff told him he needs to compete. Can you not see the difference? If Russo is half the competitor fans on this site would make you believe, why did he shy away from that challenge? Never mind the fact that he chose to play in the AAC versus the B1G.

Also, nowhere did I say the 14 decommits were all lazy. Not wanting to play ST doesn't mean you're lazy. But it is a different mind set that can easily cause recruits to look elsewhere. The point is, Ash did not get "out recruited" with all 14 decommits. Some of them, sure. Each one has it's own story. But it is not as bad as many here are making it out to be.

You really think the old staff told him (Russo) he'd get early playing time WITHOUT competing? That there was no chance he would redshirt?

I don't know about you guys, but I plan to agonize over this for the next 364 days until I see what happens next year. I will bring it up constantly every time a player fumbles, or we throw an interception, or we miss a tackle. And then, next year, on NSD, if we don't have 13 or fewer decomitts (thereby showing progress), I will hire a plane to fly FIRE THAT ASHHOLE banners over Piscataway.

I'm a paying customer and the RUFB exists to please me.

Do you really think they would frame it directly that way? It's no black and white.

This is really funny, you guys are arguing over what you each think was said and how it was framed in conversations that you weren't even a part of. Bottom line is that FBS FB coaches make their players work hard and earn spots, on ALL teams. Ash hasn't come in with some new idea of making players earn time. BTW, his comment on ST is BS. ST is where most players break into playing time b/c they are behind starters and you can't have your starters playing every play. I sure that if Odin can't prove himself as a holder for FG's but can throw all the right throws he will still see the field.

If you don't buy that there are some very fundamental differences between this staff and the old one, well then there is really nothing else to say. We will all just have to wait and see what the season produce.

There maybe some differences, but lets stop the nonsense that Ash has came in and brought with him an approach that the game has never seen before, or that players even in HS aren't familiar with. Lets see what his team does on the field, before we anoint him as a savior.

Listen, not once did I ever declare in any of my post that Ash is the greatest coach ever at Rutgers OR he is a great recruiter. Heck, I can't even say that I agree with the hard line stance he took with the character thing. I personally would have preferred a happy medium between that and the approach of the prior regime. What I have been saying however, is that this recruiting year is not normal. You cannot judge him based on this year. You just can't.

As far as the changes being implemented, NOBODY is saying he is inventing anything new. Don't know where you got that from. But the things being implemented right now in the program ARE NOT NONSENSE. Go ask the current players if they think the new S&C program is nonsense.

Agree with 90% of your post, but Ash did not fill the room with some cheap Ikea furniture. He appears to be going to Ethan Allen and picking a few quality pieces and not filling the room with cheap crap. As he said we will not just fill spots with bodies; we want men of character.
Syracuse dropped all but 4 recruits, Miami lost ~20 If you look at the personality difference between Flood and Ash I am surprised we did not lose or jettison more.
Rutgers fans you can not have your cake and eat it too.
This coach is a schiano throw back and is the opposite of Flood. Expect major upheaval and change if you want improvement. As stated above the room must be fumigated, and some of the old must go. Watch after spring practice see how many more flee. expect change if you wish for improvement

This thread is hilarious. I don't know how you guys manage to hold down a job and sit in on all the coach-recruit meetings at the same time.

I don't think anyone really cares about decommits. It's what you do in response to the decommits that's the issue. So Mark Richt came in and got rid of a whole bunch of Golden's recruits. But then he went out and signed a whole bunch of his guys - and on paper, they sure don't look like slobs. It's a smaller class than normal by Miami standards, but solid. I think the main concern on this board is that the majority of the Ash recruits (not the ones he retained from Flood recruiting) were so lightly recruited. Oden is possibly the only exception.

This is funny, RU class finished in the #70s behind Cuse and Miami ,and people are pointing out how many decomitts each of those programs had??..LMA0..its what they went out and signed AFTER the decomitts that mattered! Miami FINISHED #22 and #21 on 24/7 IN NATION! Maryland ,which bye the way also CHANGED COACHES,finished #40!!
A better question may be HOW did Maryland pull this off vrs the approach Rutgers staff took, comming in after the bowl game? Maybe showing up after the bowl game considering all the alledged 'culture change' that had to take place wasnt a good idea? Jury is still out on Ash and company IMHO.

The Maryland and Rutgers situations have little in common IMHO. It wasn't just a coaching change that hampered Rutgers this cycle. It was a solid year of player suspensions, home invasions, coach suspensions, coach induced academic violations, fights, rumours of domestic abuse, ect ect. Those commits had a solid year of people in their ear "you're gonna go there?" On top of a coaching change.

A lot for a kid to process.

And Oden only plays the most important position on the field. People are also ignoring the depth built at linebacker in just one class. So even if this class only addressed QB and LB with some other pieces sprinkled in (Turner at DT, Hayes at DB, Sneed at RB, Krimin at OL, Jabbie at WR) those two positions were big areas of need.

You do know that Ohio State (Beck specifically) assisted with us identifying and landing Oden in such little time right? Coaching is a fraternity and you don't burn your bridges.

I think Cuse did a good job in upgrading their recruiting. Maryland lost their main QB and got a pro offense QB when they really was after spread offense QB. They also had a much better recruiting class before the coaching changes with 6 4 stars recruits but losing 2 of them.

I'm not happy with this recruiting class and very few would be but let's see how he coaches the players and his recruits when he has a full year. No use complaining now since we have him for at least 3 years. I was positive with Flood for 2 years even though I could see the future. I don't think you can really judge Ash until next year recruiting class.

I am leaving work soon, i will be decommitting from this board for the day.

Chris Ash is the most interesting man in the world!
He gave his father "the talk"
His feet give his shoes blisters
If he was to pat you on the back, you would list it on your resume
