When you are playing a well coached team, that wants to shoot 3s and is used to making all of the right plays, you have to make a team play a certain way.....in order to defeat Purdue, you have to force them to let Edey and Trevion Williams score, 1 on 1........
Why would you allow a 7'3 player, free reign to attack Cliff Omoyuri, Dean Reiber or Ralph Agee.....why would you allow Williams freedom in the paint, 1 on 1.....??
Because a barrage of potential dunks or layups, is still just worth 2 points.....giving up open 3s, to Ivey, Stefanovic, Aaron Thompson and others is what Purdue wants to do more of....
If you are RU and you are Paul Mulcahy, Jaden Jones, Caleb McConnell, Mawot Mag, Geo Baker and RHJ, just stay attached to your player at the 3 point line.....if a player cuts to the basket for a layup, tip your hat and keep playing.
If RU thinks that you can have slower footed defensive players, trying to double team and then get back out on shooters, good luck......Purdue passes the ball and executes better than Illinois does. If you cannot close out on shooters after trying to double Kofi Cockburn, you will have less than ZERO chance, trying to outrun the crisp passing of Purdue.
Keep Purdue to about 5 to 6 3s made per game, and RU will be in this game until the wire.....if Edey and Williams combine for 45+ points and you give up another 6 3s, you have a chance to keep up and shorten the possessions.
This really should be a matchup that RU is familiar with and understands what Purdue wants or expects.....when a team is used to catch and shoot 3s and they don't get them, it will frustrate and throw them off.....it's one thing to see Edey and Williams continue to possibly score and think you are doing a bad job coaching, if they keep going to the post....but you have to give up something and I am not doubling the post and am not allowing Purdue to shoot 20+ 3 pointers......give up 2s, not 3s....
