After some promising games and some clunkers to this point, especially in our two games against real teams, the jury was still out a bit, IMO, on our frosh guard. No longer. His play in the 2nd half was a revelation, as he took over the game offensively for a stretch, putting the team on his back, scoring all 14 of his points in the 2nd half and getting 4 boards and 2 steals, while playing some stifling ball-hawking defense. This was not SacredColumbiaLowell, but the #10 team in the nation, who had just throttled UNC. He showed off his 3-point shooting, his mid-range jumper and a couple of nice drives to the hoop during our 2nd half run. I'm sure he'll still have some growing pains in some future games, but today a star was born and I'm excited to see his career progression here on the Banks.

Obviously, other players played great, too, especially Caleb, who played like his hair was on fire and went for 16/10, Mag, who was all over the court and got 7/9, and of course Paul, who brought the glue and toughness back to the team, going for 6/2/4, while running the offense. Hyatt had 11/3, which was nice, but he got cold in the 2nd half and while Cliff's stat line was weak, due to foul trouble and being somewhat ineffective, he really stepped up those last 10 minutes hitting 4 straight FTs (after the 2 misses) and getting 2 huge blocks and 9 boards. Cam had another subpar game against strong competition and his playing time might be about to go down with the emergence of Simpson, but there will be nights he plays better; he didn't play much in the 2nd half. And while Rieber and Woolfolk didn't fill up the stat sheet, they played good defense and held the fort while Cliff was in foul trouble. And of course a great game plan by Pike and the staff ("Pike-etball").

Great win after a tough road loss and with a full squad now in place, I'd like to think we're going to see more games like this. And what a friggin' crowd. Hoosier Daddy is right, lol. Also loved the Dylan Harper chant.

Key play was Caleb hitting him on a back door cut and Derek finished. Played with much more confidence from then on. Like he had received an endorsement from his captain.

Needed to happen. There will be ups and downs with him but the other guy is not athletic enough for this level and it has shown unfortunately. He needs to be a bench guy. I see Simpson splitting minutes all season and depending on his progression he might be the starter by the end of the year.

100%. Imo he will still have some clunkers this year where the shot just isn’t dropping

As for Cam, I’ll be interested to see if Pike can find a lineup where Cam can kind of get lost in the offensive zone for a quick pass and three to him. He isn’t athletic enough to create his own at this level. Reminds me of Kiss

The thing is, Simpson played a very good FIRST half too, but he just didn’t hit his shots.

But in the 2nd half, he was all over the place and hitting clutch shots, playing aggressive defense and getting deflections. It was truly a half reminiscent of some of those games that Geo took over.

A Star is Born, damn straight.

Simpson's quickness and athleticism are a must have. Even with the Freshman mistakes that come with him. He's the only guard we have that's fast enough to get to the hoop.
His playing time in our previous games, with Caleb and Paul out, was invaluable in preparing him for this and the upcoming games.

Simp was awesome in the first half as well. With Paul on the floor it opens up his game. I also think Cam will be fine. He's missed some open looks but he will be fine. I actually think he's pressing a little bit. He seems to be a perfectionist. Pregame - everyone is in the locker room and he's still shooting and shooting and shooting. Cam needs to loosen up and let the shots fly...he will be fine. He's playing well and shot selection has been good.

Loved how he didn’t back down against Indy’s intimidation. He stood his ground and got a call for flagrant on him. But really the announcers were pro Indy all the way.

I saw it in the first half he was ready to explode and was making great moves with good shot selection - they just weren't going down. I even said in the first half 'This is who we need!'. 2nd half comes and BOOM!!!! Shots started going down and Simpson looked like he had a step on everyone on Indiana. He should be getting a lot of playing time moving forward, and heck yeah A STAR IS BORN!!!!

I suspect as a freshman Simpson will still have games where he will really struggle, especially on the road. But today he was terrific and showed the tremendous upside he has. I can’t recall having a quicker more skilled guard as a freshman in quite some time.

I saw Paul really helping him out there and what a major improvement since the temple game. He’s going to learn alot from Paul and Caleb and when they are all on the court at the same time, thats some defensive trio.

I think theres so much to like about this group. We have so many different scoring options and when they run the offense, instead of just hoisting early jump shots, good things happen. Derek, Hyatt, Mag, Caleb and Paul can all take it to the hoop. I’m pretty sure Cam can as well, but he’s not as quick. We need run set screens for him to pop open for shots. I think he need he will be fine.

Paul helps so many teammates during the game. Early on there was a play on our defensive end that Paul saw something our bigs did or the Indiana ran, he got up and went over to Woolfolk and knelt in front of him and was explaining to him what he saw. Even when he is on the bench he can be constantly seen explaining things to teammates.

Well to be fair, there was a lot of stupid things said by a lot of posters after the Miami game

Sky is falling is too be expected

But saying stuff like the above - “Simpson is not quick” - it’s just so absurd since it’s the exact opposite of reality.

It’s like saying - “honest question, is Paul too short to play point guard?”

“I question the defensive effort by Caleb and mag in the Indiana game last night”

It’s like …. What?!?!!

Still a lot of rough edges to knock off his game but he's been better than I expected (and I was glad we got him, just realistic about what freshmen can do). The other guys we pursued -- Claude, Floyd, Shtolzberg, Armstrong -- Simpson's been as good or better so far.

Where are the posters now who criticized our recruiting of Simpson and getting him to sign. Pikiell told me last year when he signed that he was the best guard in New Jersey as a senior. I think Steve knows a player when he sees one.
A couple of them hang on the basketball board

+100

Simpson is one of the few Rutgers players that can create and make shots off the dribble; He has the skill set to be a consistent double digit scorer with some more experience. The challenge for Simpson is to replacate this performance on the road,
He took over the game playing the 2 guard, not PG. Its important because at the 2 guard he is much to quick for his defender, at PG there are guards that can match his quickness. 2 guard should be his position going forward.

Corey Floyd Jr 7.6 min, 2.2pts
Desmond Claude 19.1 min, 3.9pts
Ben Shtolzberg 8 min, 4.8pts
Mark Armstrong 15.3 min, 5.0 pts

Derek Simpson 25.0 min, 9.1pts

As a comparison.
Think we should all be happy with who we got this early in the season.
