Mike was on the first NCAA team in 75 and was an executive at Xerox. Great guy and great fan of the program. How can anyone know from watching practice that this year’s team is better than last?
That’s great. Doesnt change 1 bit that his statement means very little to me.Mike was on the first NCAA team in 75 and was an executive at IBM. Great guy and great fan of the program.
Another poster in the thread asked about him. I didn't remember him either so I appreciated the information. It's okay to not be cranky all the time. That’s great. Doesnt change 1 bit that his statement means very little to me.
I guess it's no different than some of the experts on the football forum. They criticize the recruiting even though none of them have played or coached on any level. Yet they are the most knowledgeable people around.🤣How can anyone know from watching practice that this year’s team is better than last?
It's amazing the insights you can glean from a couch.I guess it's no different than some of the experts on the football forum. They criticize the recruiting even though none of them have played or coached on any level. Yet they are the most knowledgeable people around.🤣
It's not that hard to figure out his reply was talking about who Mike MacDonald is, not a response to your questioning Weiss' statement, even though he replied to your message. That’s great. Doesnt change 1 bit that his statement means very little to me.
Come on. He's a sports columnist. That's his opinion. How can anyone know from watching practice that this year’s team is better than last?
Just like the experts on this board. No coaching experience. No playing experience. Just their opinions. 😁Come on. He's a sports columnist. That's his opinion.
If you watched UCLA and DePaul practice do you think you could figure out who was better? How can anyone know from watching practice that this year’s team is better than last?
Not last OctoberIf you watched UCLA and DePaul practice do you think you could figure out who was better?
A sports columnist who’s nickname happens to be “Hoops”. He knows college basketball.Come on. He's a sports columnist. That's his opinion.
This is a great point. If he had said that, we would almost all be concerned.Lets just say I'd be more concerned if Weiss had just attended practice and said " its pretty clear losing Johnson and Young is going to be hard for Rutgers to overcome this year."
It was "Hoops Weiss" .That’s great. Doesnt change 1 bit that his statement means very little to me.
I don’t care about his rug. Hoops is old school Big 5 Philly guy and the bestIt was "Hoops Weiss" .
Let's just hope he's better at picking BB teams than his toupees.
Oh God. This is serious. I'd rather fly more under the radar. But it sounds like we have a chance to be really good this year.😯
When you are in the B1G, you don’t sneak up on anyoneOh God. This is serious. I'd rather fly more under the radar. But it sounds like we have a chance to be really good this year.😯
And there you have from an expert! Sure hope they're right.
I have a pretty good sample size of watching how our “best players” perform in real games. I saw last year how much we relied on guys who have left on the defensive end.Green Rice - why don’t you take a dump on this post, too.
Let's punch holes in that theory.I have a pretty good sample size of watching how our “best players” perform in real games. I saw last year how much we relied on guys who have left on the defensive end.
not saying a big year isn’t possible. I just view this year as a rebuilding/transition year. I will be pleasantly surprised if we enter February with a chance at a postseason berth.
In those days, Xerox hired our players when they graduated. Pipeline.Mike was on the first NCAA team in 75 and was an executive at Xerox. Great guy and great fan of the program.
Who played with more energy on the team than Jacob? So convenient to blame the guy who is gone.Let's punch holes in that theory.
2017-2018, Rutgers was 15-19 (3-15) with Corey Sanders, Mike Williams, and Deshawn Freeman. Mike was the heart of the team, while Corey and Deshawn carried the scoring load. I recall some posters saying the team would be worse the following years without them. Well, let's see how that turned out. Rutgers (2018-2019) went 14-17 (7-13) with a fresh set of characters who replaced the so-called "studs." Guys like Eugene Omoruyi developed, and no one saw that coming. In Pike, we trust. Then there was a group of freshmen who had mixed reviews from plenty of posters on here, yet they played with heart and commitment. The 2018/2019 team was better when you compare the two teams from top to bottom.
Pike has shown each year, his teams get better as he switches the players to match the style he wants to display. We saw midway through the season last year, those so-called studs had chemistry issues that almost torpedoed the season. It is possible to get better through subtraction. You can even use the Eugene Omoruyi situation from 3 seasons ago as another example of removing an important piece to make the team better.
Thanks for the heads up. I thought we would be declared national champs already. Now not to temper expectations but just being the best team November 1st does not mean by thing by March 1st. I mean, last year, we looked like a top 10 team in actual games and it didn’t end in us looking like a top 10 team in the nation. However, these results are only encouraging and I trust this group + home fans too keep the squad together and focused for the season. As long as we do that, this team is going to be incredible
It was a full game scrimmage. Rutgers won by 8-9. Ron Harper Jr led all scorers. That’s all I know
My buddy is well connected in the RU booster circle. What he heard is it was a very boring scrimmage and that Connecticut plays tough D but really, really struggles to score in half court, which sounds about right. Minus adama, do we have someone who can put up points on a top 25 D.
If this board is to be believed Steve P is just short of Jesus so just being in the arena has us blessed with naturally occurring god of hoops ess
It seems an insane disproportionate number of classic basketball stories come from the Palestra. I have more vivid memories of the 1989 A10 semi there than I do the final at the RAC vs. Penn State. I can still see Craig Carter hanging in the air in the lane for the game-winner vs. Temple that made John Chaney absolutely meltdown in the post game presser. I used to have a videotape of the game showing me run on the floor but it disappeared.I had dinner with Hoops about 20 years ago and asked him how he got his nickname. Dick was a Columbia University student at the time and Columbia was playing Penn at the Palestra the following night. Dick who was calling the game or doing color was intently watching the U of P squad going through their practice. One of the radio kids from Penn saw Weiss and yelled out to him that he showed up a day early for the game. His reply was that he was trying to memorize the number of the Penn Squad and relate them to the names so he didn’t need to use the program when calling the game. The Penn individual yelled back “ hey Weiss you know you are crazy, Hoops Crazy”. It got shortened to Hoops. Interesting and knowledgeable reporter that at his age still Loves the Game.
