Did RU have the money advance option as Maryland from the B1G?

Even with a major donor like UA, Maryland asked for an advance to get a running start entering the B1G. In retrospect, should Rutgers have asked for a similar deal? I know they felt if they could tread water until the full share kicks in, they'd be sitting pretty.

LOL. If you are being honest, RU leaving the AAC probably cost those teams alot MORE Than $11 million, given the huge market and the replacement.

But I think the reason that MD got upfront money is that MD has an obligation to pay back the school for athletic department overruns. We dont. Also - obviouly they had leverage. They wouldnt have minded staying in the ACC. We obvbiously would have left the AAC for pretty much anywhere else.

Rutgers was one step away from becoming Temple and Uconn.

This is only a short term problem. So take comfort in that at least.

A partial Big Ten share was a cut from what Maryland was getting in the ACC, which would not exactly have been the best face to put on the move.
Even at a partial share RU is getting more than they did in the AAC.

My "unjustifiable" comment wasn't about the dollar cost of replacement but more about "you can't hold us financially captive to a conference that itself has failed to deliver consistency or display any signs of longer term viability."

Sorry, but isn't it 5 or even 7 years before we see big $ ? If so, that isn't short term, that's an eternity given our starting point.

I think it would be in the B1G's best interest for it to advance some $$ to Rutgers, with the proviso that it will all even out in the end. It's pretty clear that RU needs more money right away and the overall athletic program might experience some serious problems if it doesn't get it.

As for the exit fee Rutgers had to pay, I found that entire scenario unbelievable. The AAC did not exist when RU announced it was leaving the BE for the B1G. One could make the case that RU did not leave the BE - the BE left Rutgers, including the CYO's who got off scott free leaving AND taking the conference name with it. One wonders if RU might have done better to play the 2013 season as an independent, though arranging a complete schedule would have been difficult to do at the 11th hour.
