Monmouth is only playing three home games this year because they are tearing down their stadium during the season in hopes the new stadium is completed in 2017. . Did Rutgers speak with Monmouth about playing games at Rutgers Stadium ? Even if we charged them just enough rent to make a small profit, would they have considered it ? I still can't figure out why they are not playing at Rutgers or at a large high school field in 2016. Seems strange to only have three games.

Rutgers is too big and too far away. Sort of like when Rutgers played at the Meadowlands [winking]

That Alabama/Rutgers game is one of my all-time favorite Rutgers games.
Aside from the excitement of the game, it was the last game I ever went to with my father (Rutgers 1944). He took me and my brother to games starting around when we were five years old all the way through high school. Several games a year, and always the Princeton game, even when it was played in Princeton. For whatever reason, at the beginning of that season I said to him, "Hey. After all those years, let me take you to a game. Let's go see Alabama." And that was our last game. I smile whenever anybody mentions the Alabama game. So thanks Heaven.

I'll never forget when Bob Mulcahy publicly said that one RU home game during the Shea era against a big opponent like ND , moved to Giants Stadium would make RU more money than all the games on campus combined. I'm surprised there wasn't more pressure to do it.

Smaller home stadium back than. Much cheaper tickets back than. Doesn't work in today's environment

Whole thing makes zero sense. They have a home game week 9. When exactly are they tearing it down?

But I also think he thought doing so would be bad for RU FB accomplishing its long term goals.
But since I can't verify he said something like that back in the Shea days, must qualify it with an I think he thought that.

I must admit I had no idea Monmouth had a football team...and my hometown borders west long branch!![roll]

Well, they got at least three receivers to the NFL, including Miles Austin.....also, that might be in large part due to the connection to Jason Garrett's father, who trains prospects, living nearby.

Monmouth generally fields a pretty good team. Why are they tearing their stad. down, Last time I was there it was pretty good. If they are going to emulate a stad. like Stoney Brook has, then that would be outstanding. Monmouth has become a pretty good school over the years.
What about using RU's current Lacrosse-Soccer stad? It's about the same size as Monmouth's

Just how much game attendance size are we talking about? 10-15,000. Places like Keane CNJ, Montclair or even some area high schools etc would be potential better fits and less expensive to rent. White Bus, traveling to a local NJ venue is also better than playing 8-9 games on the road and having travel costs that might be able to be used to help offset renting a facility. There must be other circumstances, details and $$$ numbers that we don't know about or have been made aware of here. Someone please fill in with some meaningful facts and info other than only 3 home games.

Monmouth doesn't draw anywhere close to 10-15K a game. Their biggest crowd last year was 4,500. One game they drew only 1,000. So yes, they could easily play at TCNJ or Kean if there was mutual interest.

They had some scheduling issues. If I understand correctly the Wagner game was supposed to be moved to a different date so they could keep a 4th home game but it fell thru.

Their conference is a mix of southern schools. Some are full members, some like Monmouth are football only. The best known, Coastal Carolina, is leaving after this coming year to join the Big Sun Conf. They play 1 OOC game a year against a MAC team.

The stadium which holds 4,500 isn't being expanded, just updated. It'll still be the smallest in the Big South.

That would be cool if they did. I would totally go if I lived locally. The more football, the better

Nice memory. I was a student at Rutgers Camden at that time and visited friends in New Brunswick that weekend and went to the game. It was thrilling! Harassing the Bama fans on the turnpike on the way up just added to it.

Let them play somewhere else. We're competing with Monmouth in way too many sports right now don't need them playing football on OUR campus. Sorry, don't like it, period.

Just wasn't sure what you were responding to. I seriously doubt Monmouth would want to pay RU the cost of opening the stadium. They spend $ like drunken sailors but to me that'd be a dumb move for them.

I don't believe there'd be any effect on the sports relationship between the two schools. I don't see a random, one time football game having any effect on basketball, baseball, or soccer recruiting.

Rutgers isn't exactly local. Meadowlands games never felt like home games. Plenty of H.S. near them

So they're already almost 3 years behind schedule but appears it's full go now.

This reminds me of their BB arena. When my son visited in HS there were plans in place. He never got to see a game in the arena as a student.

Typically D-1aa will only have 5 home games. So really they only loss 2 home games. Since they only play 5 conference games they probably laid out the schedule so that while they only have 3 home games this year perhaps next year have 6 or 7. Move some of those home and home games to the new stadium instead of renting some place.

Just to be clear, they don't have a stadium. They have a high school like field with stands on just one side.

That what it looks like to me as well. Surprised that West Long Branch planning board has approved this project. There is very little parking nearby and the local roads are inadequate for a big event.

My lord I can't imagine traffic around there on Labor Day Weekend if they have a home game and the track is open??

The revamped stadium will actually hold 400 less than the current one if the #s in the article are correct.

I think we both know what West Long Branch would have said if they were expanding in any significant #.

They have TWO of these things....

TWO!

Kills me when I see it (THEM) on the road.

For a dozen years I worked in an office building a couple hundred yards from Monmouth Park's entrance. That highway is bad enough on a regular work day.
