Can we get Hurley or maybe King Rice, or another coach on the rise to come here, I don't really know.

But if not, do you take a chance and approach someone like Jay Williams (ESPN color, Chicago Bulls 1rst round pick, Duke legend, St; Joe's Metuchen star, jersey guy) and offer him the job, Young smart, articulate guy, who has a great personna, surround him with some crusty assistants that can teach him on the job, and make Jay the face of the program to go recruit some NY/NJ talent.

Certainly a gamble, but I am at a loss to where we should go for hoops. Its a shame cause RU has some great history in. Two big recruits can make a world of difference (Earl Duncan/Keith Hughes transfers come to mind).

This Maryland game was tough to watch, you can tell the announcers, the crowd and even Maryland felt sorry for us.

this new coaching hire has to coincide with the announcement of the facilities. RU is not going to be able to land a known commodity or any hotshot. As much as people hate the name HURLEY its the most logical choice to coach here because you can get power brokers in high school behind it..at least those who don't hate the name. He knows the area, he knows the issue with previous lack of support, Hobbs is also a SHU alum. I think if he can sit down with him and hammer out something...if you have to backload the deal and give him 6 years, you have to do it. I think its one of the few solutions we have. If someone can identify another candidate that would understand our plight and not run for the hills, Im all for it.

How about we just set this up to be able to conduct a legitimate coaching search. If we are willing to eat the final two years of EJ's bloated contract then let him go at the end of the year and start looking for the right guy. We were late into the search process and wound up with Rice and then did not have an AD when we hired Jordan. Fred Hill's got the job under interesting conditions as well. Let's do it right this time.

If you hire Jay Williams, get John Celestand, too. He knows the facilities. Then add Troy Murphy to the staff. Finish off the staff with one of the Tripuka's. Or maybe Chris Jent. Have a full staff of NJ hoopsters who thumbed their noses at Rutgers.

Let's try a different approach of hiring a real college basketball coach

That's essentially what I was saying earlier in the thread.

There are two names I've been sick of hearing on these boards: Schiano and Hurley.

I'm SICK of losing. I'm sick of getting blown out by half time.

How about John Wooden, Adolf Rupp, Red Auerbach? I'd take a dead legend over what we've got now!

We're not even laughing stock....we're invisible and irrelevant.

"Not that athletic director Tim Pernetti wasted any time finding out — give Pernetti credit for reaching out to Van Gundy on the first full day of the search to replace Hill, one of many conversations that included the likes of St. Anthony High School coach Bob Hurley and NBA commissioner (and Rutgers alum) David Stern. But with plenty of rumors circling that Van Gundy could be the next Nets coach (no comment from him on that front), the grind of the college game seems settled in his permanent past.

"That wouldn’t be my first thought," he said. "It’s a different game and I think the people who do it well are deeply embedded in it. There would be a great learning curve for me. … If I was doing the profile, I would find someone in his 40s or early 50s, in that range, who’s proven they can win at the highest level, proven they can recruit New York and New Jersey, but also have an alternate source for recruiting, "

Hurley also took his turn to describe the ideal job applicant. (Like Van Gundy, too, Hurley has no interest himself.)

"I think it’s important that it’s someone young on the way up, that they not fall victim to just hiring a name," Hurley said, repeating recent advice he gave to Seton Hall (Hobbs), which hired Iona’s Kevin Willard. "If Seton Hall needs work, then Rutgers needs even more work. If you get an older guy now, it’s a lot of work, being out there and being active in the recruiting game."

The obvious question is: who? Perhaps former Nets’ coach Lawrence Frank could enter the mix, with sources at Rutgers confirming interest from their side. Frank didn’t return a phone call, and like Van Gundy, could be done with the college game despite having begun his career at Indiana.

According to another source familiar with the athletic department, fired 76ers coach Eddie Jordan reached out to Rutgers to express his interest. But Jordan hasn’t had to recruit a player in more than 20 years, and even though he played on Rutgers’ 1976 Final Four team and was on the same Wenzel staff as Van Gundy, would his name even resonate with today’s players?

"I’m 62, that’s why I know Eddie," Hurley said. "High school kids are not historians."

"I have nothing but the highest regard for Eddie as a guy and what he accomplished as a pro coach, but I’d be surprised if he’s interested," Van Gundy said. "It’s a totally different game."

You forgot "We want Tim!" Thomas

Wow...

The people that criticize certain candidates should name their own. It's easy to hammer guys for not doing X, Y, Z and that's fair. But compared to what?

Needs to be recruiter and developer. And right now there's nothing to sell so we need upgrade in both departments. Obviously it comes down to money and the long awaited practice facility

What is so great about Dan Hurley? What has he done? Just get us a coach who can freakin' coach and win games!

I actually think hiring a Hurley would fall under the "same approach." very similar to hiring FHJ because we had to or hiring Jordan because he played here.

the problem is our pool of coaches is going to be very limited. We need someone who at least has a name that can resonate with NJ high school coaches and who knows the scene. We need a guy who is younger and energetic to sell the vision of the program itself with facilities. Then we need a guy who will be willing to understand the situation here at Rutgers, not sure many coaches around the country know the true situation here. Hurley's name is brought up because he is the most logical and easily indentifiable of any candidate. There will be others but right now I am having a hard time finding any. This may take the effort of politicians getting involved its so bad. You got Hobbs, you got Lesniak, you got Codey..it would even take wonders to bring Hurley here at this point. Maybe hire his dad to take over for year or two I don't know but we need a shakeup here and we realistically are not going to have a lot of candidates...too bad we passed on Ben Howland

Fred Hill was never a head coach anywhere at any level and didn't have a prestige name behind him. There was a reason he never got any head coaching jobs

didn't almost everyone want him hired. i remember being an outcast when he was hired.

no they didn't...remember we had a lot of Waters supporters on this board...yes half the board thought Hill was a good hire. A lot of us me included didn't. I knew he wasn't the right guy the night we lost to Jackson State....this guy couldn't even get fired after Lebonabing. That's how pathetic and cheap our administration was

You want to be depressed Fred Hill won 15 games the year he was fired. The last time someone won more than 15 was Gary Waters in 2005-06....and he was fired after that year.

Our 3 highest win totals in the past 12 years all resulted in a fired coach.

Win totals counting down from 2015

10 12 15 14 15 15 11 11 10 19 10

the bold numbers are when a coach was fired! Rutgers basketball

I happen to like the FB hire but can't you say what's so great about Chris Ash? He's come from a great coaching tree but no HC record. Hasn't he injected some excitement and proven he can hang in a room with the best NJ HS coaches? He won't get outworked, is young and energetic too.

OK, well lets have the same openness to basketball. Established HCs in NCAAB make more than Ash so we can't hire them but you can still find a good mix of recruiter and coach who has 20-win seasons under his belt

It's a Fred Hill Jr. type hire.

I am not saying it isn't going to work.

Because they're from NJ? Hurley's coached three programs. Took Wagner to the dance and could win the a10 even without a top guard. Not likely but the team has an identity and talent and he's recruiting a10 plus to high major talent to Rhode Island, talent we'd kill for I might add.

I get that by bringing his name up people get annoyed but I get the same feeling when people say he's a bum without naming an alternative in a realistic scenario.

I posted this in the other thread and will post here too

it doesn't necessarily have to be Hurley. I use him the most as an example because he is easily the most identifiable. Choppin guy is bizarre. There is no allegiance to Hurley, no agenda. Hobbs will and should have others on his list...truth be told its not going to be a big list.

I see Hobbs will have to make a power ala Barchi the same way Hobbs himself was hired. He is going to have to do this quickly and swiftly but taking advice from people who know the lay of the land. Its got to be bold and its got to be a move that goes against what traditionally RU has done ala what they did with football

I am not against a 7 year plan IF this is a whole big vision tied in with facilities where everyone is on board and RU makes it clearly publically that there have been missteps in the past but this time they really are committed and this practice facility plus the new hiring shows that. Evidence of commitment by increasing funding across the board in hoops... increasing head coaching salary, increasing assistant salary, increasing recruiting funding, increasing support staff, paying attention to the concerns of the last existing loyal diehard Rutgers basketball fans. Introducing of a fundraising campaign specifically geared toward the practice facility which will include some other sports. Hobbs will have to make a splash that we truly will fix this. Not just the usual words but action...IF IF IF all this stuff is done in one big package where you start to also do greater outreach to NJ high schools and power brokers to fix this mess...I have no problem with a 7 year deal to a coach that of course would somewhat of a buyout clause in there in case the dumpster fire gets even worse.

What I cant deal with is giving the keys to an older NBA coach that does not have recruiting connections and does not have the energy at 61 to complete a total rebuild as massive as this one is. Again it doesn't have to be Hurley but it needs to be someone with connections somewhere in recruiting who is bright and young and who Hobbs and the fanbase believes can sell a vision
