RAPID REACTION - Monmouth

The staff has had him for 2 months.....

While you are hyper-focused on Lathan and pining for more Ogbole. Maybe focus some more on Og. In the first 2 minutes of the game Ogbole had 2 poor screens on offense (both moving and could have been called) followed by a missed defensive rebound and a turnover in the post when he put the ball on the floor.

Ogbole has nothing to do with Somerville making the same mistakes on the offensive end. This not getting fixed is more on the coaching staff then the player.

Since when do true freshmen have all of their bad/inexperienced habits coached out of them in 2 months?

Yes, Sommerville needs work on the defensive end. But he’s now only had 4 games (including SJU exhibition) of playing college players on other teams. Can we give Pike & Co. a chance to do their jobs of coaching young players before we start drawing final conclusions?

Heck, you’re pining for more Ogbole, who is a 24-year old man, and you’re thinking he still needs to get experience and coached up. Why not give the coaches time to coach up the 18-year old freshman big man too?

I am talking ONLY about his habit of dribbling the minute he catches.

The rotations on defense that is a different story and that will take some time.

Everytime in practice he catches and immediately puts the ball on the ground there should be consequences (very minor like 5 pushups)

I think it needs to be recognized that lathan is NOT cliff and he has handle and hands and footwork. In the offense sets we run, he will need to sometomes back his guy down from near the three point line down (both from the top and the wing) and just needs to know when to put it down and work on the balance so he doesn’t need to put it on the floor more rhe nexesssey to get the shot he wants

We are being critical here . Who was the last center that scored 36 points in his first three games …???

Kid has game and will work to redefine it

Ogbole is just awful. Huge mistake not finding another center somewhere to help out. Lathan and Martini fine against smaller non league teams but Center is going to be a problem in league and against better Comp. Lathan is more of a PF. Post D is going to be a big issue
Ogbole is awful against smaller quicker players. Not sure there are any big plodding centers still out there, but if we do face a team with a dinosaur at the 5 he might be pretty good. Can he get better at least defensively and with rebounding? I don’t know and certainly don’t know if he could do it for this year. If he can’t, we have Somerville who arguably has played as well as any freshman center since the RAC opened. Don’t see Somerville as a power forward although he does have ball handling and passing skills. We also have Martini who although somewhat undersized is both physically tough and fundamentally sound as a player. With his outside shot he may give opposing 5s fits. We will likely face a number of tall thin players who Ace could match up with adequately defensively while they will not match up to him well defensively given his athleticism, ball handling, passing and outside shooting. Offensively we are fine with who we have. Our defense and rebounding needs work, but we have both height and athleticism. Overall I would say that we did great in the transfer portal. Martini, PJ and Derkack have made an immediate positive impact on the team. Acuff was definitely slowed by a broken foot, but I am still hopeful he will make a positive contribution. Pikiel put together the best team he could around his Star freshman and so far they are a lot of fun to watch!
