However our funds will be still sorely lacking in the SKWC. This is where RU can really advance the sport to another level. This is funded outside of Rutgers fiscal constraints and relies on donations. my wife and I found the difference out two years ago. We have decided our money would be best spent in this endeavor, as it provides a clear linear line to success. Get more and better resident athletes get better recruits. This is how the big boys do what they're doing.

This :100points:

Funding for SKWC was brought up in the other thread. To not hijack the other thread or have this important issue overlooked, I’m starting a new thread for discussion purposes.

If RU fans REALLY want to see RU wrestling more competitive, donate to SKWC. SKWC is a non-profit charitable organization so all donations are tax-deductible. ALL donations matter and make a difference. These wrestling clubs are an elite wrestling program’s blood line. The #1 question asked by all top level recruits is “who will I train with”...that’s where resident athletes come in. These resident athletes are elite wrestlers (Nat Champs, AAs and/or Olympians) who are absolutely needed to help train and wrestle against our athletes. Wrestlers need more than just team wrestlers/coaches to wrestle. That’s how the elite programs separate themselves...they have successfull wrestling clubs and training centers.

Like Koleszar, my husband and I finally understood the importance of a well funded SKWC. All donations, directly to SKWC, will help make a difference. The pin pool is an easy, fun way to donate. It’s fun to track & it rewards the grapplers for hard fought pins and bonus points. For those that don’t like the unknown when pledging in advance, you can just donate NOW, at the end of the season knowing the number of pins and how much you would like to reward each pin. Regardless of how you donate (money, become a SKWC paying member, golf outing sponsorship, pin pool or other fundraisers), it’s imperative that you just do it! If RU fans want to talk the talk, you’ve got to walk the walk. That’s how this program will get better, exponentially.

Thanks for posting. You are so right.

The SKWC needs to do a better job of explaining the roles of the SKWC, the local Club and the impact of the Regional Training Center. As you referenced, the top Teams have the well-funded Clubs with World Class Athletes. There is a direct correlation between Club funding, team results, and recruiting.

We have a fully supportive Athletic Director. Pat Hobbs is ensuring that the Team receives all the needed University resources to succeed. Now our fans and supporters can financially support the SKWC so we are on a level playing ground with the Penn States, Ohio States, Iowas, and Cornells of the wrestling world.

In the next few months, the SKWC will announce innovative initiatives that will enable our supporters to have their financial contributions multiplied.

Please be on the lookout for exciting announcements!

Diane, you stated it so well and so clearly. For those who may want more info please be aware that the SKWC is a first rate organization that is well run and greatly benefits the wrestling program. Every top wrestling school has similar organizations. For some reason the NCAA seems to give wrestling more leeway in terms of support groups like this. Now if the could be some way to recognize donations towards priority points that would be perfect. But at least your contributions get the full IRS deduction as I understand it.

All of SKWC activities and events are first class.

Question: once RU gets the full Big 10 financial share, how much money, if any, can be shifted toward the SKWC? Or will the money need to stay within the walls of the university, so to speak.

Great question, 3rdandLong21. Zero BIG money will go to SKWC. SKWC is separate and apart from Rutgers University/Athletics. Rutgers can NOT financially support SKWC. That’s why it is soooooo important to donate directly to SKWC. They are the ones that have to get and pay for resident athletes to help train and wrestle our wrestlers. Crazy, right? That’s why it’s been so confusing until we finally got it. Wrestling Clubs are really unlike ANY other collegiate sport club. Wrestling Clubs and Training Centers are governed by NCAA rules. So there is this “connection” that’s completely disconnected financially.

For those who are interested, here is the SKWC website. There are links to donate, become a member, pin pool, etc.

FYI: Pin pool info needs to be updated. Obviously, they had a busy weekend and didn’t get to do it yet :).

The funding for PSU’s Wrestling Club is in a league of its own, comparatively speaking, thanks to their sugar daddy and to their large, rabid, knowledgeable fan base. They all get it. It’s paid off for them in spades in a relatively short time, too. They are now consistently on top of the ultra elite pile. We witnessed that again this weekend. SKWC doesn’t have that big sugar daddy. But, we do have a rabid, knowledgeable, growing fan base. We need to start there. Every bit helps and it adds up. It’s going to take an RU village & it can be done. If RU fans truly understood how it all really works & is connected...you’d be far more amazed and appreciative of how far this RU program came with very little. Yet, we almost (by one half point) ended the NCAA tournament in the Top 10. Imagine if SKWC was successfully funded. That’s THE big missing link. Rutgers University Athletics supports wrestling on one end of the spectrum. It’s the other end (SKWC funding) that needs to be connected for continuity & elite success. That can not be accomplished any other way except through donations and fundraising, period.

I just starting understanding it all myself after two years...light bulb :raised_hands:

Anyway, thanks for letting me explain it in my layman’s terms. This will be my last rant unless someone has direct questions that I can maybe answer or get answered. BTW, for the record, other than being a donor, I am not affiliated with SKWC. I just love RU wrestling.

Diane, You are 100 percent right again. I will match the next 10 pledges of 125 dollars to the Pin Pool in honor of Nick Suriano.

Matt.S

Thank you! I certainly will add $125 (plus) to my Pin Pool total. That makes 8 Elvis :cool2:.

I was such a proud alumn this weekend at the NCAAs and it now continues with the support from this board.

The raffle idea Iowa has to win two tickets to the NCAA's is a great interactive way to get fans involved. Just like the pin pool. I don't know if it's against NCAA rules. But I would imagine handing out pamphlets during matches explaining SKWC's mission statement, what others have/where we want to get to, history and general information(like current resident athletes) might be a good way to get more involved and inform people on what we the fans can help accomplish.

To tell you the truth, I would have never learned about the SKWC two years ago if it wasn't for this very forum. That's when we started investigating and learned all the in's and out's, that this isn't funded by Rutgers but solely by donations.

They need to start marketing the living crap out of the SKWC at matches at the RAC. Awareness goes a long way.

Agreed. They need to market the crap out of SKWC at matches, if its allowed. If it is allowed, they should have a table by the ticket office with information, give aways, etc. (I'm guessing its against NCAA rules, because I would think this would be one of the first ways SKWC would promote)

Exactly! Great posts & suggestions by everyone! Please keep the fundraising ideas coming.

I have first row mat side seats literally next to the visiting team. It’s a lot of fun and stressful being so close to them. We’ve often respectfully (well, @98% of the time, :sunglasses:) engage one another. I’d be willing to sell my 2 seats for 1 BIG game to highest bidder and donate the FULL amount received directly to SKWC. Just have to figure out a way to do that and be in full NCAA compliance.

Thinking we should possibly create a separate thread? SKWC $125 for 125. I ended up making a straight donation separate from my pin pool pledge. The website allows you to make a single donation.

You donated $125.00 USD to SKWC

Diane,

Great idea, I also would donate several of my center mat side seats to a fund raising effort. As long as the donation is greater than the seat price. Very often I've donated foursome's to fundraisers that auction for less than it costs me, so I've stopped that.

Elvis

To give you another reason to donate to SKWC to help our RU Wrestling program, please watch Flo Wrestling’s recent twitter video interview of Nick & Richie. They represent RU University very well. I could not be more proud as an alum! Great young men.
