According to ESPN projections, Duke and Indiana will meet in the Pinstripe Bowl. This is a big test for the viability of the bowl. So far, every edition has had a natural draw to bring local fans to the Bronx. This is the first time that two teams with no New York connection will be meeting. Will be interesting to see how many people attend. If NYC is a genuine attractive destination for visiting schools, and there is more general college football support among New Yorkers, it should draw more than 30K. I tend to think this game will be closer to 20 than to 30.

What an exciting match up!! Can't wait! It depends how those two teams travel and how many alums in the area are interested in going. They still might sell a few more tickets to casual fans than Temple sold to their conference championship game though.

Well both schools have a decent amount of alums and students from the NYC metro, so they should see a decent turnout. I think that was a good call for the Pinstripe.

Pinstripe is usually one of the more entertaining bowls no matter what locals like to say.

I like the pinstripe, with 2 kids in college it is a nice affordable extra game. People outside of this area think a trip to NYC is cool. Only thing is cost of a trip to NYC during Christmas is expensive.

a couple of unseasonably warm days before & a strong prediction of a bright sunny day in the high 40's low-mid 50's on game day - and a lot of promotion - .... there may be a chance to get a decent crowd -

3 days of raw cold damp / sleet before and a prediction of more of the same on game day @ 34-35 degrees and it will be a mess

I actually really like the pinstripe and will attend most years regardless of who is playing. I have another obligation this year otherwise I would be there.

Duke doesn't even draw well at home, I predict they will travel poorly to this Bowl. Not sure about Indiana. Now if they paired it with a Duke-Indiana basketball game at the Garden, THEN they'd have something !

Not really. First game with Cuse and Kansas State was a nightmare with frozen field. Cuse and WVU snow storm game was awful too.

NYC is prohibitively expensive. It's a TV game. Not a real bowl game or experience.

Two schools that use football to kill time before basketball season do not a packed stadium make. Does anyone believe locals will make up the difference?

Not a bad matchup, could be worse out there. May think about going if cheapest ticket on Stubhub was lower than $73.

This bowl is "viable" before one person buys a ticket. The NYT had an article the first year of this bowl explaining how the Yankees leveraged interest by companies wanting to sponsor baseball into getting some big sponsor payouts for the bowl game.

Basically, the Yankees make enough to cover the bowl payouts just from sponsors and the ESPN TV rights payment, before any tickets are sold.

They just played in basketball in the BIG/ACC challenge. Drawing the casual fan will be a major challenge for this one.

If they could have scheduled the Pinstripe in the afternoon and a Duke-Indiana BB game at night in the Garden, they would have drawn a lot of fans. Otherwise, I don't see a lot of Hoosier fans making the trip. Hell, they didn't even go to their own stadium on homecoming. (Unless it was because we were the opponent)

Don't forget last years 31-30 OT win for PSU over BC. The SU vs KS game was also a last minute game where SU won because a kid saluted his family in stands after a TD. I think its the RU games that have been the boring ones but even Iowa St was tight for awhile IIRC.

As a sidenote - Duke was already up here once to play Army. That game was a sellout with tickets going for $100 the last week. Duke was Army's blowout this year. With a Indiana team that's spunky it could be a good game

This bowl can't die a fast enough death. Horrible playing conditions on loose turf, lousy location with ridiculous parking costs, and horrible sight lines. The faster the Big Ten gets rid of this dog, the happier I'll be.

It would have had the potential to be s top 6 bowl IMO if it was played indoors...

Yes.... The Yankee organization is propping up the payouts as mentioned above, but this bowl deserves to die..... This matchup should draw poorly and I hope that starts a downward trend till they just give up on it.

Joking right ?
These teams will not draw anywhere close to 20,000 fans to the South Bronx for this Bowl game.

Freakin' Giants. A simple dome could've brought a major college bowl here. And a Super Bowl where fans don't freeze to death.

It's on 12/26, which is a crap date (just like our bowl in Detroit last year). Good luck getting more than a couple hundred people from their own states to NYC. They need to recruit regional alumni whom can day trip.
