4,100 announced attendance for Minnesota at Ohio State hoops at The Garden today. Can’t blame the weather either.

Weird decisions by B1G.

Some of the commentators like Doug Gottleib mocking it.

I thought it was stupid too. It should be Rutgers vs a B1G team with a hockey squad every year and that same school is in for the hockey and b-ball. So you always have RU vs hockey school.

But honestly we don’t wanna give up a home game so if I were the AD I’d only agree if it were considered a neutral game and our home games stay equal.

There was a big women’s march in NYC today. Would assume that most tickets for an event like the hoops game would’ve been made in advance so probably no effect but don’t know. It may have made the city a clusterfudge today.

This was the first year that it didn't have regional schools. First year was PSU and Michigan for both games (incredibly successful, unfortunately, for the same reasons why we hate both those schools - lots of fans in this area). Last year had us in it, and the basketball game had a huge crowd. Lower bowl was filled and a lot of the upper level. Although OSU is a draw in this area maybe a little, Minnesota is not at all, and neither really is MSU hockey, just basketball. So an understandably lesser crowd. But doesn't mean the event should be made fun of. It was one of the great basketball experiences for me since joining the B1G.

Isn't it a good thing for basketball to play at the Garden. It's an easy train ride to get to and It's the Garden. When this team is rolling, the city will be a great place to play a top team.

noooooo

no MSG please. other than the Tourney this year, some other Tournament or Festival, or maybe a road game vs Fordham or the like

NEVER play a B1G home game anywhere other than the RAC.
As long as the Big East plays their tourney at MSG the Big Ten tourney should NOT be there.

IIRC, there was about 12K for the RU v. WI game at MSG last year, but of course we had to give up a home game for that one.

Disagree. Playing at the Garden is good publicity when you have a good team. It becomes an "Event". Simple to get to for tons of fans.

It cuts down on attendance, no matter how easy it is to get to. People don't want to take the train to NYC.

Let it be someone else's home game. Not ours.

RU hasnt had a winning season in over a decade and even when they had okay seasons, neutral site games at MSG or Continental or in AC didnt draw well at all (with the exception of post season NIT run). Talk to me when RU is in the top 25 because besides that its not going to be a draw in NYC and why would anyone want to actually give up a REAL homecourt advantage at the RAC in a conference game just so we can play with 15K in an arena where the atmosphere will easily be less and most will have worse seats than what they would be getting in the RAC

hopefully this thing ends soon because I fear another return trip back

Coach P wants us to be in the garden ever year ..big ten tourney satisfies that

As time goes on, and we get better, look for us to try to schedule some neutral site games there ...out of conference, get there in the preseason tournaments, jimmy v, ecac, and maybe some interesting one time schedule games (no return visit)

If we want to be NYC's team and deliver for the B1G then I wouldn't mind being there a game each year...BUT when we get better AND I think negotiate something for ourselves as part of it.

When we sell out every B1G game and most of the OOC games at the RAC then we can think about having games at the Garden. And that's when the RAC needs to be expanded.

Partly because that's a fun day in the city. Hanging in a great city and watching my team play.. that's a good thing

If it’s an away game for RU all for it. Go for it. The announced crowd was 4,100.
This was an awful crowd and an awful idea.
People were upset with 4,000 at the RAC. 4,000 at MSG?? Bad idea.

Another thing to consider is that the Big Ten Tournament is being played here in 5 weeks. For diehard Minnesota and Ohio State fans looking to take a road trip east maybe scheduling it the same year as the Big Ten Tournament is not the best idea. Plus, OSU and Minnesota fans in the area looking to see their school play both also had the opportunity of going to the RAC.

Good point. You're not going to pay for two trips in one month's time.

part of the reason the big 10 wanted us, was that we might drum up interest in the NYC market.

we probably could half fill up MSG for a mid season game, someone mentioned there were 12,000 fans or so at last years Wsc game..... not bad

the big 10 has to realize that RU probably has to be very good, ranked at times, in order to be a big draw.... if we were good you would see Rutgers alumni that now live in the city, maybe going to the game.

we cannot force feed a fan following there, it has to come after some success.....as far as our current season ticket holders, and occasional fans, some may make the trip, many would not

The Big 10 tourney won't draw there IMO-----many of the better teams fan bases will save their money for trips to the Regionals.

Attendance wasn't good in DC last year either

I think RU could draw well in a regular season game there but they have to be good and the opponent needs to be good.

Reason for only 4000 is 1 school from Minny and 1 from Ohio. Costly for those fans to come to NYC. If RU and say PS Garden would have a hell of a lot more fans then 4000

we shall see but the Big 10 has an enormous alumni base in the NY area. These people do not get to see their team much so I suppose that they are counting on these people to attend games...as well as the locals...the BE tourney has alot of just hoops fans and businessmen going to games with no affiliation. The Big 10 could siphon away some of this from the Big East tourney.

And don’t even think of OOC games anymore. I went to the RU-Fordham game last year at MSG after the Penn-State vs. St. John’s game and it was awful.

I thought there were suppossed to be hordes of B1

We keep hearing that but they did not show up for Iowa in the Pinstripe and they didn’t show up for OSU and Minny.
