PISCATAWAY, N.J – Rutgers field hockey is nationally ranked, following the release of the Penn Monto/National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division I Coaches Poll.on Tuesday morning. The Scarlet Knights are ranked No. 23 in the nation.
The Scarlet Knights have begun the year 3-0, outscoring their opponents 14-2 through three games. The 2018 season started off with consecutive shutout wins, over Richmond (3-0) and Hofstra (8-0). Then on Sunday, RU claimed its first ranked win of the season with a 3-2 triumph over then-No. 18 St. Joe's.
Last season, the team spent nine weeks in the national rankings. The Scarlet Knights were ranked as high as No. 18 in the nation and finished at No. 21. In 2017, the program defeated three ranked opponents - No. 12 Stanford, No. 19 Iowa and No. 23 Old Dominion.
Sophomore midfielder Daphne Groothuis leads the team thus far with three goals, six assists and 12 points. She leads the Big Ten in points per game. Austyn Cuneo, Kassidy Shetler and Alanna Gollotto each have two goals apiece. In the cage, sophomore Gianna Glatz bosts a 3-0 record with a 0.76 goals-against-average and .818 save percentage.
Rutgers has eight games remaining against team's ranked in this week's poll. Two of those come in non-conference play, against No. 6 Princeton and No. 12 Delaware. Six other Big Ten teams are ranked - No. 3 Maryland, No. 5 Penn State, No. 7 Michigan, No. 9 Northwestern, No. 14 Iowa and No. 22 Ohio State.
Rutgers hosts two home games this weekend. On Friday it hosts Cornell (3 p.m.), while Sunday morning will bring another ranked matchup against No. 6 Princeton (11 a.m.).
