RU @ Clarion thread

I think that’s probably true if you have two wrestlers with similar ability and potential.
Barbosa has a much higher ceiling than white in the long run. No point in burning his shirt now when white is serviceable. And the extra year of growth and development for Barbosa will pay dividends.
It feels like yesterday that White was the one viewed as a high ceiling after a pretty good RS year..

I’m in the camp that if a wrestler is the best guy and wants to go then he should wrestle.. extra growth and development is not guaranteed and neither is health + new recruits/transfers down the line.

That’s a fair point. I think every weight and wrestler is unique, and probably has to be handled as such. Sometimes it will be best for the wrestler and the team to have the true fresh go right away and sometimes the redshirt is the better option. Barbosa def seems like the better of the 2, but that’s also because the other option is a top 30 wrestler and not a top 10. If we had 2 guys both contending for AA and one is a frosh, then I would probably be more in the camp of let the best wrestler take the mat.

A few thoughts....

I will say, White does look better so far this year. He's bumped around a lot and our hopes were real lofty after that amazing redshirt campaign.

Barbosa has looked great. Like 95% of our guys, he needs to strengthen up.

The Clarion guys looked stronger.

Nini looked excellent. But after he got out to his back and fought off a pin, he was exhausted. I think that guy was a redshirt senior though, so that's a positive in my book.

Freeman looked great, then I don't know what the heck happened. It was so fast I missed it while on my phone. I was impressed up until he was pinned. It was clearly a mishap of some sort. Just a shame that it happened so early after dominating the guy.

Shawver had a unexpected rough match. Glad he had to dig deep a little. These matches will only help down the road. Reminded me of Ashnault against that kind from Indiana, during his senior year. Sometimes a "nobody" can prove to be super tough. Shawver eventually took control and had a great finish.
